On Saturday November 14, Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus played records before, between and after the bands that played the Tri-State Conspiracy and Friends show at the Bower Poetry Club in the East Village of New York City. The bands—Silver Dollar (a cool, authentic-ish Jamaican ska group), The Dirty Boogaloo (mutant funk and soul), White Knuckle Rodeo (no-frills hard rock), The Arkhams (cool psychobilly) and the host group The Tri-State Conspiracy.

On Tuesday August 11, Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus was contacted by his old pal Don Boles to spin records at his Club Ding-A-Ling--held each Tuesday night at The Hyperion Tavern in Silverlake.  This was a last-minute affair, and played by ear, so to speak.

Some bands played.  When we got there, a band was making really loud noise, with a woman singing high-pitched, wordless vocals, the guitarist making feedback and the drummer not really keeping a beat.  It was fabulous.  Then a DJ played (Jimmy Hayes, was that his name?) some records, probably European and from the seventies.  Another band, from Wisconsin, played--a duo, just drums and bass.  They set four refrigerator-sized speaker cases on the stage like a wall and set up on the floor in front.  Don Boles told me that each band was to play 20 minutes.  This duo played about 12.  Then I played these records:

The Astronauts--Baja (RCA Victor)
Ronny Kae--Drums Fell Off a Cliff (Bandbox)
Brownsville Station--Jailhouse Rock (Hideout)
Flamin' Groovies--Teenage Head (Kama Sutra, Europe)
King Curtis & the Kingpins--Changes Part I (Atco)

It took that long for the next band to set up and start playing.  That's when we left.  Thanks to Don Boles for inviting me to his swingin' party.

None of these records are for sale.
