... and if you don't pay us a visit, we'll make that the carol singers visit you!
On Friday we have the STAND UP CINEMA CHRISTMAS PARTY
In true demonstration of the Rising Sun's festive spirit, this month's Stand Up Cinema is absolutely free – our little present to the cinemagoers of Reading!
Our main feature is Vincente Minnelli's MEET ME IN ST LOUIS
Vincente Minnelli's classic musical stars his future wife, Judy Garland, as a young St. Louis girl in love with the boy next door. Set in St Louis at the turn of the century, this is a valentine to the charms of American idealism, echoed by a superlative score, which includes such classics as ‘The Boy Next Door’, and the old favourite ‘The Trolley Song’ with all its merry zings, dings and clangs and featuring ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ just to set the tone for the festive season. Unashamed hokum but great fun.
We're open at 7.30, and if you're planning on coming please arrive early as space will be limited!
Continuing the theme, Saturday sees us pay host to a festive edition of BAND-O-RAMA. Band-O-Rama’s seasonal wassail looks something like this
SIX NATION STATE Living local legends. They used to number five, but they now number four. John their bass player quit, this time last year. They signed to Jeepster, released their super/special/sexy debut album. Which everyone who purchased it, loved it to pieces. They toured their collective feet off.
They received acclaim in abundance from XFM, Radio 1, Dermot O’Leary and Jonathan Ross. Six Nation State used to play 250+ gigs in a year, not only in traditional venues but also adding shows at their fans' request in homes, schools, offices and even the Avon canteen
Their record label went bust. Most of the band moved to London. They are still living the dream. They have been recording most of 2009. They coming out the studio to play a one off at their favourite Reading venue-that being Rising Sun Arts Centre www.myspace.com/sixnationstatetheband SIXTY WATT BAYONETS Four young kids from centre of Reading.Lead singer Penny is a History school teacher by day, punk banshee at night. Their shows are becoming legendary. Penny spends the whole gig in the crowd, singing and dancing-in your face! Sixty Watt Bayonets were selected by Radio 1 to play Reading/Leeds Festival this year. They were the only Reading band to play the both festivals this year. They released their debut record in the summer and it was picked up by XFM, Radio 1 and BBC Radio Berkshire. The printed media said.
"Penny Bayonet’s powerful vocals drive the band’s sound, underpinned by a tight disco-punk stomp, that draws equally on fuzzy, eccentric garage rock." - Rock Sound "the ability to write songs that make you want to shimmy your ass, wave your fists and shake your head like a rabid Chihuahua fresh out of a washing machine." - Kerrang! "UK ladies with pipes are old news, but Penny Bayonet is no Adele. Her shouting and wailing has a depth even Beth Ditto can’t beat. Backed by an all-out rocknroll band, Sixty Watt Bayonets are intense to the point of exhausting." - www.venuszine.com www.myspace.com/sixtywattbayonetsMIDIMIDIS Local 8 Bit punks. This two piece do not sound like anyone else on planet earth. Championed by XFM;Radio 1. 2010 should be their year. www.myspace.com/midimidisWe'll be open at 8pm and entry is a paltry £6 on the door, or £5 with a flyer or via www.wegottickets.com As you can imagine, we'll be a little quiet for a few days, but don't forget that in two week's time we have the CLUB VELOCITY NEW YEARS EVE PARTY

Indeed so! So much so, in fact, we have a weekend that's packed with events, and time is rather short,so without any further ado, here's what we have for you in our humble abode this weekend... On Friday, we welcome back THE BIG UNTIDY NIGHT OUT
From Finland via Germany Big Untidy bring us MAEKKELAE'S TRASH LOUNGE with various members of UUSIKUU guesting, plus HANA BUSHNELL, an amazing 15 year old talent we came across with an acoustic guitar and a voice like Joss Stone.
There's also close up magic from MAXX, and from Holland - CLIO also a couple of other acts yet to be confirmed but looking good.... We'll be open at 8pm, and it's a paltry £3 to get in
Saturday sees BANDORAMA once more
This episode of BANDORAMA is a mixture of the young and beautiful (so it says here) and looks a little bit like this...
RISE ABOVE
Three teenagers from the out skirts of Reading. They are the winners of the 2009 Plugnplay Battle of the Bands. They deal in an exciting brand of grunge pop-rock. Think somewhere between Nirvana and Silverchair. www.myspace.com/riseaboveofficial THE SCARLETS Three boys; a girl from Oxford. This band excite us, as they are not your run of the mill punk rock band. These kids sound fresh and excite us. It has been a long time since a band with this much potential have come from Oxford. BLUNT FAUST
Death metal at the Rising Sun Arts Centre? Oh Yes! Heavy noise-think ENT,Napalm Death and the mighty Discharge. We're open at 8pm again. And entry is £5 on the door, or £4 with a flyer
And to finish off on Sunday, THE ROOM OF STRANGE FOLK PRESENTS.......
DOLLY & THE CLOTHES PEGS This wonderous group present their swinging 50s groove, just cooling down from a world tour of Ireland! The band currently feature Richard on gee-taugh, Ian diddlin' on the mandolin and harmonica, Adrian pickin' banjo, Chris strummin' ukelele and washboard, Sarah and Liz whooping and a hollerin', Dave bangin and stompin and Bryony pushin' accordion.
THE FOX & THE BRAMBLE A delightfully different slice of de-arranged folk from two geniuses of nonsense. Influences on Fox & The Bramble include conversations with their canary Egon, broken bikes, the lake behind their house and apples that they can't reach from the bridge. And they're a riot! STU CLARK Leaving his old band The Om Corporation behind, Stu has stepped up to the mic quite wonderfully with his new solo guitar and vocal compositions. Don't miss his early set!
We're open at 7.30pm, entry is £4 on the door.
That's us done for another Thursday evening, and can the last person to leave turn off the lights?
That would be nice!

And with that in mind, it's rather fortuitous that we're back again to keep you warm for another weekend! On Friday we bring you another helping of CLUB VELOCITY And the bill looks like this...
ATTENTION THIEVES Attention Thieves are ready to show you what they’re made of. With just a handful of gigs under their belt these boys are already gaining praise in the musical underground. Their forward-looking combination of hooks, atmospheric guitars, intricate drumming, adventurous management and good looks has already won them an army of local fans and a support slot with Filthy Dukes.
The 4 track EP (Out December 4th) perfectly showcases Attention Thieves, taking you from post hardcore to indie rock through to punk. Attention Thieves are not a band that can be easily pigeon holed but their energized mix has been compared to The Police, Bloc Party and Queens of the Stoneage.....
VICARS OF TWIDDLY Based in the rock n roll haven that is Benson, Oxfordshire. The Vicars (yes all men of the cloth, each and every one) of Twiddly deal in the best surf crazy crazed filth, this side of Bellingham USA . Dig The Fuzz!! Expect Go Go dancers, expect to be blessed and expect to selll your soul to the Devil.
But don't take our word for it, here's what Nightshift reported recently "The Vicars of Twiddly emerge in full ecclesiastical attire, though they seem to have upgraded themselves from vicars to popes. Musically, they’re a bouncy surf band, with a nice line in 60s-sounding keyboards and twangy guitars. They come across a lot heavier than their Myspace recordings, and sound all the better for it. In the 80s there was a huge scene of similar-sounding bands, mainly in London and often dressed in sharp suits, like The Mysterons and Out On Blue Six, who seemed to fade away with the dance revolution. To be honest this music is best enjoyed in a live environment, The Wheatsheaf and tonight’s enthusiastic crowd seem to agree."
BURN BEFORE READING There was once a band called Kicks, who signed their lives away but for not enough money in 2007. Which, if nothing else, probably goes to show you should never trust anyone says their name is Jazz. The band burnt out. Now here comes Burn Before Reading, for round two. This is their debut Reading show Pop music with a big capital P.
We'll be open at 8pm, it'll only cost you £5 to get in or £4 with a flyer
On Saturday we have a VOLUNTEERS CHRISTMAS PARTY!! We realise it's a bit early to be celebrating Christmas but we felt it would be nice for us and all you Volunteers out there reading this should have a little get together before peoples timetables became too full and use the social to get the season underway! (Like you do) We're open from 7.30 onwards, (although anyone who'd like to turn up at 6pm to help with the decorations is more than welcome)
Then finally on Sunday, it's time for MILONGA SIMPATICA
As you all know by now, Milonga Simpatica is the best Tango evening on a Sunday night in Reading.
Expect plenty of Heartache, passion, betrayal, earl grey tea and fairy cakes.
We're open at 7.30 pm, and it'll only cost you £6 to get in.
That's us for another Thursday evening, I'm off to stick another log on the fire

And with that in mind, make sure you've got the fire going, chuck another log on it and roast some chestnuts as we tell you what's happening at the Rising Sun this weekend
Friday sees another helping of CLUB VELOCITY This time those nice people at Velocity HQ bring us a tip top night of singing song writer greatness
And it looks something like this...
BEN 'GOD' MARWOOD Easily the best singer songwriter in Reading by miles. His songs reach the parts that other singer songwriters can't. This is Ben's first Reading show since finishing his latest UK summer tour. Ben is GOD in our house and locally attracts a ever growing passionate and enthusiastic fan base, who sing along with every song. As heard on Radio 1, Radio 2, 6 Music;XFM.
This will be a warm up for his already sold out show at the Union Chapel supporting Frank Turner in December. Frank Turner is a huge fan, as are is this music? who described him as "Britain’s answer to Conor Oberst’s fragmented folk", and you can't argue with that!
JAY NEWTON Once member of the legendary local band Heartwear Process, Jay is happens to be part of in FullForce Gales and Quiet Quiet Band. Jay solo, is a real force to be reckoned with. His songs deal with real life, the things that really matter. Think John Martyn then you are thinking in the same ball park.
JEMMA WILLARD Jemma has only playing live less than six months, but we think give her time and Reading really good have something rather special here.
We'll be open at 8pm and it's only £5 to get in (or £4 with a flyer)
Then Saturday, sees FIESTA LATINA once more
Fiesta Latina is our regular Latin Dance party with music from resident DJ who will be playing salsa, tango, bachata, meringue, milonga, cha cha cha, vagionata, reagaton and more (Maybe a bit of swing in there as well who knows). What do you mean you've never been along?
As always, expect a great atmosphere and some hot music.
We're open again at 8pm, and it's a paltry £6 to get in
Then finally on Sunday afternoon it's time for our 1920s TEA DANCE For one afternoon only, The Rising Sun is turned into a 20s style art deco dance hall complete with music from the period: Jazz, Tango and much more. Dress in your 20s vintage gear and come to the Charleston dance workshop and learn a few steps so you can shake a leg later on. A delightful way to spend an afternoon. Free cakes and tea – as much as you like and a little live music thrown in. It’s the cats meow!
We're open at 2.30pm and it'll only cost you £7.50 to get in! That's us done for another thursday evening, and be warned, if you're staying in all weekend we'll be sending the carol singers round!

Seriously do I? I sometimes think people only read this when an event is missing... But anyway ladies and germs, now that I've made myself as popular as Thierry Henry in a Dublin bar, I'll take a quick breather and let you know what we have for you down at the Rising Sun this weekend.
Friday night, this is normally a time when Brendan "I know Jose Mourinho" Rodgers is preparing his latest excuse if Reading lose their next game, and it's also time again for STAND UP CINEMA Stand Up Cinema is our monthly, independent film club showing rarely seen classics, obscure documentaries, cult independents and overlooked modern gems. It's a fantastic way to see some great and rarely seen films.
This month’s main feature is Jean Cocteau’s classic LA BELLE ET LA BETTE.
Cocteau’s second feature set standards in fantasy which have yet to be surpassed. Few filmmakers even with the advantage or is that the hindrance, of CGI have equalled his lavish vision.
Many of the sequences such as those in the enchanted castle are pure magic and the mood and tone of the film, influenced by the paintings of Vermeer and Rembrandt, have been an influence on fantasy filmmakers ever since.
This is an unmissable chance to see one of the true classics of early cinema!
We'll be open at 7pm. The short films start at 7.30, and then the main feature starts at 8pm.
Entry is a mere £4 at the door (or £3 concs and ptl)
By the way, if you would like to showcase your work why not contact info@real-time.org.uk.
The films don’t have to be in their final form, and we're aiming to show up to 10 minutes of each film, so it’s a great chance to gauge audience reaction! While I've been typing this, my sister's been trying to ring me, I think I'll ignore her for another half an hour. This might seem evil but this is what she gets for grassing me up to Dad over that incident with the greenhouse, I'm sure there's at least another twenty quid's worth of lost pocket money she still owes me I must say venting does feel rather good, so with that in mind I'll move on to Saturday
This Saturday, we're proud to bring you something special from DOLLY'S ROCK'N'ROLL DINER
For the benefit of those few remaining people who still haven't been, Dolly recreates the atmosphere of a 50’s diner, come and eat hotdogs, cupcakes, ice cream and drink shakes and organic drinks from the bar (all vegan). Dance to our DJ,s spinning tunes from the 50’s and to our special guests The Ding Dong Daddios who bring you the most danceable tunes from the swing heydays of the '40s and '50s.
As usual we'll have all the culinary delights of cakes and hotdogs (Vegan!), plus the opportunity to dance, dress up and mince about as if you've just stepped out of the 50s ....
We'll be open at 7.30 and for this night only entry at the door is £10.
Anyway that's all from us for another Thursday evening, have a great weekend

Evenin' All! Before I regale you with what we have for you this weekend, you might be interested to know we have a 1920's Charleston Dance Class happening tonight!
It's really good fun and easy to learn. You can also use the steps you have learnt at our Tea Dance happening on Sunday 29th. It starts at 8.30 and it'll only cost you £5.
And of course, there's also another class following on next Thursday at the same time.
This weekend we have something special from THE OUT TO LUNCH CLUB
The next performances in the Out to Lunch programme are very special events. Both are tributes to Pete Hay by artists and musicians who knew and collaborated with him and shared his interests in the secret landscapes and histories of Reading. The first is on Friday and is a performance of the piece ‘A LANDSCAPE OF CHARMS AND MACHINES’ written by Tim Hill and commissioned by the Rising Sun.
The piece was premiered here month and is a beautiful work which draws on the composers experience of the same waterways and landscapes which inspired Pete Hay.
We're pleased to tell you that this performance is taking place in St Laurence's Church in St Mary’s Butts, an iconic Reading Landmark which featured in Pete’s work. The music is a powerful piece and this is a great opportunity to hear this new work in surroundings not often used for presenting this kind of work. The performance starts at 8.00 pm. And costs £10. Then on Saturday, Out to Lunch bring you two events.
In the afternoon, we have an illustrated lunchtime talk about the work of Pete Hay. The talk is free and it takes place at 2pm
And then, in the evening we'll be hosting a perfeormance of CHARMS AGAINST JACKALS.
This is another tribute to the late Pete Hay, painter, print-maker and the driving force of eclectic publishing house Two Rivers Press for many years.
Pete was devoted to Reading and its many neglected treasures be they people, places or ideas.
'Charms Against Jackals' is an evening of music and text. It incorporates field recordings made by Jonathan Coleclough around Reading's waterways; the Kennet, Thames and Holybrook, as well as sounds made from the flint stones that are found throughout our local environment, processed electronically into a soundtrack for hidden landscapes.
During the performance poet and author Geoff Sawers will write a narrative which will be projected onto the walls for all to read. Poet David Greenslade will read some of his poems. And composer and saxophone maestro Tim Hill will play a variety of horns.
We'll be open at 8pm and it'll cost £7 on the door. (The performance starts at 8.30)
That's all from us for another week! Til next time...

Hello!
Thursday evening is upon us once more, and that means it's time to let you know what we've got at the Rising Sun this weekend. I'm even missing the fireworks to tell you about it! Although from what I'm able to see from my window they're a bit of a let-down this year
First of all, on Friday we bring you a special tribute to The Cure.
A relaxed and fun evening which has become a firm fave since it started all those years ago with our Leonard Cohen tribute...
This time around, a wide selection of local musical folk will be paying homage to Robert Smith and his backing band, re-interpreting whole swathes of Cure songs in their own unique style. If you'd like to find out a bit more, why not contact Katie on katherinetook@hotmail.com I wonder if anybody is having a stab at "Speak My Language" or "Subway Song"?
We'll be open at 8pm, and expect to pay no more than £5 on the door.
Then Saturday sees another regular treat from our pals at Oxfam Music.
As you expect, our buddies from up the road give us this rather wonderful line-up for your delectation:-
Yet again, we'll be open at 8pm and it's a paltry £5 to get in.
That's all from me for another mailout, have a nice weekend and remember "Disintegration" is the best album ever
(Says so in South Park so it must be true...)

And as well as the chance to buy a wide range of books, and creations from a local artist or two. We'll also be bringing you artist demos, live poetry to name but some, and much more. However, if we told everything that was happening at Bookface, we might still be here on Sunday!
Why not have a look at the link to find out a little more
It's a great opportunity to see something you don't often find in Reading these days. We'll be open from 11am, and it won't cost you anything to get in!

I've had flu for the last couple of nights, which is why this little missive from us to you has been delayed again. Anyway, I've get off my deathbed to tell you what we've got for you down the Rising Sun this weekend.
This very evening, we bring you CLUB VELOCITY
Our pals at Velocity HQ bring you another fantastic evening of live music, and the bill looks a little like this THE WOOKIES Prog hippy nonsense from the Oxford Road,Reading. Championed by Steve Lamacq and Stuart Maconie (6 Music) Anyone dressed up as a forest gets in free. No hippy trees though. They released their debut single earlier this year.It features their classic ditty "In The Forest". HALF RABBITS One of the biggest bands in Oxford, if not the biggest of the decade. They can easily sell out Oxford Carling Academy. They have not played Reading for quite a while, they only play for Club Velocity because they know which side of bread is buttered.
So do Rolling Stone, who took a break from talking at great length about bands that sell shedloads in the US, but nothing over here to say we should expect great things! QUIET QUIET BAND Heartwear Process 'super' group in debut show shocker! Paul Smith and Jay Newton feature, with a couple of metal teenage sexy kids!?! So what do they sound like i hear you ask. Well they are the missing link between Low, Broken Social Scene and Modest Mouse.
It is however, our solemn duty to inform you that they dont sound like Steel Panther
We're open at 8pm, and it's only £5 to get in or £4 with a flyer.
On Saturday, we bring you a HALLOWEEN FRIGHTFEST
We are getting together on the eve of All Hallows to celebrate all things creepy and not quite alive anymore. We're open from 6pm. Expect some scary storytellers, a spot of cabaret, and much more
Sunday sees another offering from THE OUT TO LUNCH CLUB
The next particular presentation is its a real treat for anyone who appreciates high quality cutting edge Jazz. Tony Bevan, a member of legendary drummer Sunny Murray's European trio, has turned the lumbering bass sax into an amazingly agile source of improvised magic (his tenor sax is pretty hot as well) . For this gig he’s joined by Dominic Lash, whose recent exploits include touring with The Convergence Quartet and debuting a trio with English improvising pioneers John Butcher and John Russell. Boston-based Joe Morris is a brilliant but unflashy (and thus criminally under-valued) guitarist with a totally distinctive approach, built on fleet single-note lines and a great use of space. Australian drummer Tony Buck has an especially high profile through his membership of The Necks. and the ‘deep listening’ he displays at the heart of that cult trio makes him the ideal man to anchor this amazing band.
This is a great chance to see some incredible musicians and playing of the the highest quality.
We're flinging our doors open at 8pm, and it's a paltry £7 to get in.
With blood beginning to collect on my palms and visions of St Francis dancing in my eyes, it's time for me to bid you farewell...
