Current mood:  cheerful
CHIRLA will begin working on their Civic Engagement campaign.  As we all know, this year is crucial to mobilizing the immigrant vote, especially here in California.  Many say that immigrant voters can determine an outcome in any election.

CHIRLA will be doing door-to-door knocking and Phonebanking voters to reach more than 6,000 voters this year before the November election.  That's twice as many voters as we reach last year's.

This year we also want to bring awareness to one of the ballot issues for this June's election:  Prop 98.  This proposition would eliminate rent control in CA, and remove current existing laws that require low-income housing developments & the right for renters to receive their security deposits.  This proposition would impact a lot of the communities here in Southern California as well as immigrants who can barely afford living in an overpriced state.

We need volunteers to donate their time to the events below.  We especially need volunteers to help us do Precinct Walking on Saturdays in the San Fernando Valley, but if people can commit to come any other days to Phonebank here at CHIRLA that would also be great.

We will provide:
  1. Training
  2. Food and light refreshments
  3. Phones (Phonebanking only)
  4. Materials

We hope that everyone could at least volunteer to at least one of these events and participate directly with our membership who are also very excited to work on this Civic engagement Campaign.

Attached are some documents that have been created.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

CHIRLA’s Annual Gala will be held on April 10, 2008 at Union Station. This year’s theme, "Immigrant Families Strengthening America," not only highlights the contributions of individuals, but pays tribute to the families that enable our community to strive for justice. The 2008 Annual Gala will again attract over 600 community leaders, politicians, advocates, organizations, and individuals who support immigrant rights. We will come together again because so much more needs to be accomplished to ensure the rights of immigrant families.

You can be a part of this event by becoming a gala volunteer. We need help with the set up and break down, greetings and registration, raffle, bar (21+ only), bussing, info table, and awards, and giveaways.

To volunteer for our gala, or for additional information please contact Whelma Cabanawan by April 1, 2008 at whelma@chirla.org or 213-353-1348.

Thanks a lot and we look forward to hearing from you!

Last week the students of CHIRLA's DREAM Network and Wise Up! traveled to DC to speak with Senators about the DREAM Act.  While they were waiting in Senator Durbin's office for FIVE MINUTES, FIVE ANTI-IMMIGRANT CALLS came in.  Five calls in five minutes!

We have to combat these anti-immigrant, anti-education activists!  CALL YOUR SENATORS TODAY, TOMORROW, and EVERY DAY until the DREAM Act passes!

Call (800) 614-2803 (toll-free) and ask for your Senators' offices.

Visit CHIRLA's Campaign Page to send an e-mail, too!  So far over 700 people have taken action! Let's make it 1000!

Show Reviews

On American Ese...

With three writers it..s a miracle that any one-man show comes out in the wash intact, yet the writing is this show..s strength. Under Blake..s direction, Gonzales performs the autobiographical story of his youth in El Salvador... It..s sort of a rags-to-riches tale: Gonzalez has landed movie roles playing an illegal immigrant...The irony isn..t lost on him. Among the show..s pleasures is Gonzalez.. cynicism and candor about his almost-genetic attraction to the bottle. In a pre-emptive apology, he implores us not to be too hard on people who don..t speak good English, but Gonzalez.. English is no impediment...His story is able to overpower.

On Macho Men & The Women Who Love Them..

It..s easy to see why audience members keep returning and the house is always packed..Maria Costa explodes on the stage with BRILLIANT comedic skill. COURSING THROUGH HER VEINS IS THE DNA OF THE MARX BROTHERS, LUCILLE BALL, AND FANNY BRICE. This is one funny girl who deserves to be a big, big star! - CBS RADIO
