As most off you may already know .... I am the official volunteer Special Events Coordinator for a wonderful LGBT youth Organization serving LGBT youth ages 13 -18 here in the NY, NJ and CT Tri-State Area known as "OUR YOUTH" www.myspace.com/our_youth. The kids call me "Ti Ti SCANDELLE" :)About two months ago I went to see the Gus Van Sant- Harvey Milk bio epic "MILK" staring Academy Award winning Best Actor Sean Penn featuring Best Original Screenplay by Dustin Lance Black at a local movie theater in NYC. The experience was powerful - so much so that the next day I contacted my good friend Robert De Anthony (President and Founder of OUR YOUTH - a fantastic guy) and told him that I felt strongly that we schedule a field trip for the children and staff of OUR YOUTH to see this historic movie. He agreed. I then set myself on a path to make it happen. A lot easier said than done. After countless unanswered phone calls to both the theater itself and the distribution company (somewhat understandable considering today's economic crisis). I changed course on behalf of our kids and went directly to "the man himself" Gus Van Sant with my request. And to my surprise - Mr. Van Sant responded the next day!!!!!!!! Immediately assigning his personal assistant (whom I now adore completely for clearing a blazing path through all the red tape) to schedule a "special screening" of the movie for 30 people including OUR YOUTH members mostly LGBT with a few of our Straight members alltogether about 26 kids) including the volunteer adult staff of 4 (yours truly in tow).It was a great day for all of us!!! I met Robert and the kids in front of the theater and we were greeted with warm smiles from the theater staff and the look on the faces of the kids as they watched one of America's greatest heroes "Harvey Milk" (and trust me when I tell you Sean Penn IS Harvey Milk and he delivers a legendary knockout performance) change history by becoming America's first openly Gay elected goverment official. The children were amazed! And afterwards we sat in the theater and took pics (check out my special OUR YOUTH photo album here in MySpace later tonight) and answered questions and got on the spot reactions from the kids who really got the mission of Mr. Milk and his friends and supporters along with the fact that we are unfortunately still in a fierce fight for LGBT Civil Rights here in this Country and throughout the world!) Robert and I then took the children on History Walk along NYC's LGBT historic Christopher Street stopping along the way in the Oscar Wilde Bookstore (now closing its doors)- Passing by the front of The Stonewall Bar (where many claim the physical battle of the Gay Rights Movement started) etc. It was a special day that I will always remember and I thank God and his Angels including Robert De Anthony, Gus Van Sant and his team, and the people over at Focus Features for delivering a gift to these kids who were very much in need of education on life and accomplishments of this great American LGBT hero! GUS VAN SANT we salute you!!!!Just wanted to share this great adventure with all of you!
