Beyond Fallen - Mindfire

What a glorious Metal racket this US lot do make! Certainly influenced to a large degree by fellow legendary Metallers ICED EARTH BEYOND FALLEN also chuck in specific reference to NEVERMORE, old school METALLICA, JAG PANZER, MACHINE HEAD, PANTERA  and JUDAS PRIEST  to conjure up one of the most thrilling Power Metal albums you'll hear this year.

The glory of the riff has never been understated in Power Metal and BEYOND FALLEN make no exception to the rule. Coming across with more spit and bite than a barrel full of King Cobra BEYOND FALLEN invoke bands such as the mighty GRAVE DIGGER, EIDOLON and PRIMAL FEAR for their capacity to render steel girder riffing obsequious to the memory of Heavy Metal music.

The groups second long player ''Mindfire'' is sure to annoy the neighbours with its pre-eminent thunder and total Heavy Metal outage. Without much pause from ''Act Of War'' to ''Bomb Inside Your Head'' BEYOND FALLEN deliver a classic, solid brooding Power Metal album that will put them at the fore front of, at long last, a burgeoning underground US Power Metal scene.

Amongst the many standout cuts is the relentless battering of ''Blood On The Ice'' a song that METALLICA used to be able to play; the ominous timbre of ''Mindfire'' the NWOBHM styled ''Sniper'' and the exceptional ''The Illusion Of Your Life''.

Fronted by the snarl and rasp Joe Karavis a singer resonant of Chris Boltendahl and augmented with a resolutely familiar duel guitar pairing of Steve Jasuilewicz and Mike Johnson this triumvirate is more than ably supported with Chuck Donahue on bass and Tom Carden on skins.

With the Power Metal genre throwing up more paupers than Kings these days BEYOND FALLEN should be able to entice even the most hardened anti-Power Metaller critic into their way of thinking.

Sunday, June 17, 2007

BEYOND FALLEN is a Heavy Metal band from Northeastern Pennsylvania (USA). Founded in 2001 by guitarist Steve Jasuilewicz in 2001, it wasn't until 2003 that the band's line-up was complete and BEYOND FALLEN was a fact. Over the years they've worked hard on their material and in the same year the band was formed a four-song EP came out. Two years later they had enough songs for a full album and thus was "Lost In The Shadows" a logical consequence. Like the EP this was a self-release.

To promote the band and their music, they played lots of gigs and could also get support slots for OVERKILL, W.A.S.P. and BELLADONNA. Apparently the public liked the tunes a lot and this encouraged BEYOND FALLEN to go on, inspired for the next album(s).

And here it is: "Mindfire", to be released on the 29th of June via the Dutch label Melissa Records, who have so far four bands under their wings. What you immediately notice is the pureness of the music and the guitartandem that pushes the songs forward. "Act Of War" is a first example of this. Great uptempo Metal that certainly will do good live, as is the case for the other songs too. Joe's vocals are clean, but with a rough edge and can sometimes remind of a much lighter version of Mille Petrozza (KREATOR), Gerd Hanssens (THE DIFFERENCE), Bruce Dickinson (IRON MAIDEN) and a bit of Udo Dirkschneider (U.D.O.). Sure, you'll probably raise your eyebrows, but dare to compare. Of course Joe is not an exact copy of the mentioned singers, but I, for one, did hear their influences.

Musically you get neckbreaking riffing and very energetic drumming, as you can discover in the rest of the songs and more specifically "Blood On The Ice", "Enemy Of An Open Mind", "Mindfire", "The Dominance", "Illusion Of Life".

Slower, but therefore not less direct, material was used for "Closer To The End". The instrumental "Fields Of Honor" also fits that description, although this song is more of the Progressive kind and if you listen carefully you can distinguish three parts. Changing melody, drumpattern and riffing is done in the blink of an eye, without failures, and shows BEYOND FALLEN can do more than pure Heavy Metal. The ending forms the bridge to "Mindfire", where particularly the drums play an important role and ofcourse the tempo is upped again.

And that's another pluspoint: different tempos per song, i.e. start slow, build up towards uptempo and somewhere in the middle a total change. Mostly this is done for the solo part, which makes the change predictable, but this is still well executed and really benefits the music. "Mindfire" is one example, but you can hear it more clearly in "Sniper".

And if that wasn't enough, check out the closing "Bomb Inside Your Head", because this is not something they quickly wrote to have a last song. Fast riffing, dito drumming (single bass, tough) and Joe vigorously behind the mic. Solos too are top notch. Flawless song, like most of the pack here.

It took me a couple of listenings to fully appreciate BEYOND FALLEN's tunes, and I can't say I regretted, because there's so much on this album. Each time you can focus on another element: the twin guitars, the drumming, the vocals, melodies, Progressiveness, .... When your mind is on fire, it wouldn't be right to just sit down and relax, right? "Mindfire" probably means something different, but for me it comes close to how I think it relates to the music. Names I can think of as comparison could be CRUSADER, THE DIFFERENCE, BRAINSTORM, (present) SAXON, some ICED EARTH, U.D.O. and naturally IRON MAIDEN. But BEYOND FALLEN makes its own Metal and put their own stamp on things. All things considered, I find "Mindfire" a record that deserves much attention. Their appearance at the Bang Your Head festival in Germany is a good start. Let's hope Melissa Records can distribute it widely enough. I do have one negative remark and that concerns the production: I know that you can't have it big from the start and I don't want that, but mainly the sound of the bass drums is a little too thin, too 'ticking'. It's a detail on such a good record, but a detail that - if corrected - can only be an advantage for the future albums.

Video from the CD release show, Saturday June 9, 2007 at Nightcaps, Edwardsville, PA USA. The song is Sniper from the new Beyond Fallen album 'Mindfire'

Saturday, April 21, 2007
Hey, here's a band update...

The new album: yes, it is done - the recording and mastering were finished
around end of January. All the artwork was done and the first run of CDs and
promos are with our label Melissa Records in The Netherlands. They are
working out details for distribution and release, but it looks like sometime
in May. We'll keep everyone posted. We can't wait to see the thing! Since
the stronger music scene in Europe and the rest of the world is the focus,
we're still working out the details on getting you folks in the states the
new album, but you'll most definitely be able to order online, and as always
get all our CDs at our shows. Radio, press, promo, interview requests can
come to us or our label and we'll be able to arrange what you may need. US
radio and media - let's start now so we are not trying to do this all last
minute and our schedule is booked up.

Speaking of release, we have finally confirmed our stateside CD release
party! After a lot of searching and hard work we have confirmed June 9th at
Nightcaps in Edwardsville, PA. This a good venue that can accommodate the
Beyond Fallen show. We're working on getting other quality bands to share
the stage, and have what we think is the best sound man in the area booked
for that evening. So we are pretty excited about being able to play in our
hometown for not only our longtime fans, but to show people new to the band
what the whole Beyond Fallen experience is all about. Many people who see
the band for the first time locally had no idea there's actually a band like
Beyond Fallen based right here in Northeast PA, and are simply amazed.
Anyway, we're glad to be able to do this.

As you know, for whatever reason we've had a hard time breaking into the
local click and in-crowd - not that we need to be accepted by such a
nonsense, but it seems there's a wall built up around here that when you are
on the outside you have little chance of getting the support and a fair
shake. Things are so biased here, there so much back stabbing, and a
closed-minded attitude has dragged the whole scene down - however, we have a
chance to show people here what we are made of on our terms and why we've
become one of the most successful bands to ever come out of Northeastern
Pennsylvania and to be recognized outside the area on an international
level. Hopefully, we'll break down some of the local ignorance and
pre-conceived perceptions. Beyond Fallen have always done things our way. We
won't bend to trends or fads, and that's why we've not only lasted this
long, but keep moving ahead.
We have a few dates added, but one in particular we'd like to mention is a
very special benefit show: May, 27 2007 at Decades, A Benefit for Cody
Reilly,  and this will be held at the club Decades on Owen St, Swoyorsville,
Pennsylvania. It's planned to be an all day benefit to help the family of
Cody Reilly, an 8 year old boy who is suffering from Metachromatic
Leukodystrophy - a rare disorder that destroys the nerves in the brain. Help
us help Cody. Prizes giveaways and much more!!! We hope everyone gets
involved in this, and are working on getting the bands now. Sadly, some
selfish and greedy bands won't do a benefit because they won't get paid, or
are worried about what THEY will get out of this. Some bands won't even
answer email or requests! That is really pitiful. This is about our music
scene pulling together to make a difference in someone's life. There are
other charity concerts etc. in our area put on (won't mention the names),
but unfortunately it's clear that some of these band's motives are not
sincere. Let's try to pull together and make this a positive event for the
right reasons. Beyond Fallen has donated several times to charity events,
and will continue to do so. We are always honored and humbled to be able to
make a difference in someone's life.

Got a few shows added near year's end - True metal America gigs! We have a
few dates with Attacker, Anvil, and Sacred Oath in December in New Jersey,
and Allentown PA, we'll keep you posted on those.

Trip to Europe: Man, time is flying by. We can't wait to get over there this
July, we have so many friends and fans to meet, and we hope we can meet as
many of you as possible. We've also confirmed a new date - July 15th at the
Ballroom Hamburg, in Hamurg Germany. Everyone we have come in contact with
from Europe has been awesome! We;ve also been given help and advice from
those that have done the trip to Europe, the festivals, etc., and it's been
great to hear what to expect. More to come...

T-shirts! Yes, we are designing new T-shirts., and these will be awesome.
Top quality you would expect, full color etc... you guys are going to be
very impressed! We'll have them in Europe when we get there and you'll be
able to order online. They will be printed in The Netherlands, and the
company that is doing them is top notch pro, and has done other band's
shirts for numerous tours.
