Hello from the road,

We're about a week into our Summer DisasTOUR and it has been a very interesting adventure.  The shows are going surprisingly well, in spite all of the broken guitars, broken bones, and broken plans the earth can throw at us in one short week.

Because of 1000 fun and not-fun distractions, it has been quite a while since we had enough time to get to a computer....

Scott wrote the following passage on Tuesday, somewhere in between St. Simon's Island and Daytona Beach:
Tuesday, June 30, 2009
If the offensive odor of a paper mill won't motivate my lazy hung-over ass the persistence of a hotel clerk will definitely get asses out of beds. Its 1:06 and I'm in the death throes of my worst hangover so far. We're cruising along the golden isles of Georgia on the way to Daytona Beach, FL. I haven't been to Florida since Disney world when I was 12. Totally looking forward to another state and making some new friends. Last night was a great time. Rafter's Blue in St. Simon's Island is a venue we'd like to revisit. A cool older place with a healthy bar, two rooms, great sound and banging BBQ tucked upstairs from the typical storefronts of a beach town. I want to play there on a weekend night. I woke up at 11:26, crusty eyes opened to familiar faces, nearly a half hour late for check out and ready for another night of jamming. Contemplating the lovely tanned sexy women of FL…my white ass baked in a Georgia parking lot…
As we backed out of the hotel parking lot there was a disturbing sound... someone had left the back doors of the van open and Shane backed over his back-up guitar! It is fucked. No more backup guitar. Shep left his sandals at the venue. Brandon is licking his wounds from the devilish rocks at Folly Beach in Charleston, SC, and all I want is a bloody mary and a double cheeseburger.
Can't wait to see you all.
Thanks for reading,
Scott Birch, on behalf of Cougar Magnum
====================
Back to now......
The show in Daytona went very well.  The Ocean Deck is a slamming bar.  We played with a cool band In My Words, whose drummer Aaron Hearst let us crash at his house in Orlando after we rocked to a hookah-mellowed crowd at the Meridian Hookah Lounge.
Tonight we are in Tampa, about to rock another location of the Meridian Hookah Louge.  We're excited.
----Just want to take a moment to recognize the hard work that two very important members of our touring party have been doing:
Cat Strandberg - She has a phone in her ear constantly, working, pushing, making connections for us.  She is doing more work than anyone could ever ask for.  We are so thankful to have her on this tour with us.  She really earns the term "Tour Manager."
Jim Schaeffer - We asked Jim to come with us on this tour with only 36 hours notice.  He said yes and instandly assimilated into our weird little family.  Suffering a near-concussion in Charleston, and a lobster-like sunburn in Daytona, Jim remains the most organized and hard working member of this group.  With a background in lights, he has been running our sound when needed, filling our mailing list every night, carrying stuff that takes two of us weak band members to haul by himself, and generally keeping us in line and level-headed day and night.
==================
For Tonight, We are lucky enough to shack up with one of my best high school friends, Jon Scott and his cool-ass roommate Hugo.  We got 3 days off in this area.  I heard Clearwater Beach is a badass place to chill.....
Happy 4th of July.  Thanks for reading.
Sending 4000 smiles,
Brandon and the entire Cougar Magnum Team

For almost 3 years, we have been constructing and expanding a "diverse" repertoire of original music that people have said sound like anything from Van Halen to Weezer to George Clinton.  For almost 2 years, many friends, family members, and skeptics have asked us, "When are you going to record a damn album?"  For almost 1 year, we have been discussing and deciding what, where, and how we were going to record our songs for an album.  And now FINALLY, for almost the last week, we have been making moves and getting started recording our first full length album.  Its true: we have cleaned out our practice space and turned it into a recording space.  We borrowed some drum mics from our friends Drew, Adam, Eric, and Andrew who rock stages as The Old Regime.  We borrowed extra cables and condenser microphones from our friend Cyrus.  We have turned Shane's iMac into a recording-machine.  Now all we need is a few weeks to lay down the 20 or so tracks that have gotten us through the last few years of our lives.  And now today, Thursday, May 14, 2009 we can proudly say that the recording of "Seize the Day" has officially begun.  Although it's a small step in the huge project we're about to tackle and pump to completion, we're proud to say that we have in our possession solid drum tracks for 3 songs: "Good Gangster," "Walk to Work," and "It is What it is."  Over the past almost 3 years, we have played to maybe thousands of people, and everyone seems to have different favorite Cougar Magnum songs.  Some people like the heart-pumping shredding guitars of "Evil," while others just want to sing along to "Felix Chesapeake."  Others want to dance and groove to "Just a Dream" and some just want to demand that we play "Freebird" or "something we know."  So, here's a short list (sneak peek) of some "hits" you might see make it onto SEIZE THE DAY: "All Your Cares," "Take Me Out and Draw Me a Picture," "Checking Your Watch," and at least 4 or 5 others that we hope are brand new to you.  We anticipate lots of long hours and late nights while this project gets rolling, but we'll do our best to keep you posted on our progress, and also maybe upload a couple raw tracks for your scrutinizing pleasure.  Thanks for reading, thanks for listening, and thanks for your continued support.  Without each and every one of you, we'd really have no reason to make an album. Ciao.

Cougar Magnum brings the noise

A cougar holds an electric guitar in one paw, and flashes the rock
sign with his other paw. This memorable image lets the viewer know that
they are in for some rockin’ music, presumably, though incorrectly at
the paws of a large cat.

Cougar Magnum formed in the summer of 2006, when Shane Smith, guitarist and vocalist, met drummer Alex Shepard and they began playing together.  Smith later met Brandon McLean, guitarist and vocalist, at an open-mic night at Blue Martini later that summer. Until recently, there had been a high turnover rate of bassists within Cougar Magnum, having had six
players previously. Seventh bassist Scott Birch joined the band about
two months ago, when he was introduced to the band through a mutual
friend. After trying out and rehearsing, he’s been the bassist every
since.

The name Cougar Magnum came about as a joke from childhood. Smith and
Shepard were twelve years old, and they and another mutual friend all
thought that Cougar Magnum, the name of a gun from the Goldeneye video
game, would be a good name for a future band. Years later, the current
band formed and got booked for a show in short order, and a name was
quickly needed. Cougar Magnum was the first name to come to mind, and
has stuck ever since.

There have occasionally been problems with audience members
comprehending the name. Smith said, “We've had a bunch of people think
it's different.  We were at Blue Martini for another open mic and when
we got done with the set we said 'Hey thanks, we're Cougar Magnum.' I
went up to the bar and the guy was like, 'Cooter Magnet, huh?  Pretty
out there.' It's not that and then you know the whole cougar with the
older woman reference thing. That has nothing to do with the band.”

The band decided to go on tour for two months, from the end of March to
the end of May of last year. Smith said, “We did two months and played
thirty shows, totally self-booked, we did everything. We drove all the
way down to south Florida and Fort Lauderdale and all the way up to
Messina, New York which borders Canada. We played pretty much every
major city on the East Coast.”

Cougar Magnum returned to Raleigh on the night of February 13th,
playing a set at the Berkeley Café, with Vintage Freshness opening.
Vintage Freshness warmed up the crowd with some blues-inspired
stylings, driven by drumbeats and accompanied by saxophone.

While waiting for Cougar Magnum, the audience mingled, talking and
eating. The room darkened, and colored lights swirled around the room
in kaleidoscopic patterns. The lights went up as Cougar Magnum went on,
and the crowd clustered around the stage.

For their first song, Cougar Magnum played “Felix Chesapeake”, the last
song from their first CD entitled “The Greens”. They also played
“Emily’s Song” and “Outer Banks” off this album.

The band employed a wide range of instruments during the concert,
using cymbals, a keyboard and a cowbell. The members also used their
voices by harmonizing, singing a cappella, and, at one point, whistling.

After playing sixteen songs, Cougar Magnum finished their set to the
sound of raucous applause. The audience asked for an encore, and they
obliged, ending the night by playing an energetic cover of Weezer’s “No
One Else”, punking it up a bit with the addition of cymbals and heavy
drums.

Rasta, ska and jam band influences can be heard in Cougar Magnum’s
music. Various influences are named amongst the members, such as the
Beatles, Van Halen, Creedence Clearwater Revival and general jazz.

In terms of defining their sound, McLean said, “That's one of the
things that we've gotten over the past couple years. Some people say we
haven't really found our sound yet, but we are definitely working
towards that direction.”  The members disagree on how exactly to
categorize their music. Birch said, “pop-punk”.

Aside from touring, the band has also played special gigs, such as one
for a friend who was showing her fashion collection at the Art to Wear
fashion show. McLean said, “We were background music. Normally, we're
kind of in the front of things, with lights on us. At the fashion show,
we were just noise on the side. We had to play for exactly how long the
girls were walking down the runway. We apparently screwed it up, but no
one noticed and everyone thought it was great”. Smith said, “It was the
most people we have played to, because there were like 2000 people at
this event in the Court of the Carolinas.”

Cougar Magnum will next be seen at Lincoln Theater on March 16, opening
for Badfish and Ballyhoo. They will also be releasing a full CD in the
coming months, to be found on iTunes, their MySpace page and their
website cougarmagnum.com.

STREET TEAM:
Check out our circle of support at
cougarmagnum.com/streetteam

What is the Cougar Magnum Street Team?
The street team is a group of people who are excited about this music as we are, and want to help spread it. They're located in various spots along the east coast and they help the band promote our music and upcoming shows in their local areas.

What will I do?
When you become a part of the street team, there are a couple of things you might do. We may send you posters to hang up or hand flyers to give to your friends.  If you have facebook, you can become an administrative member of our facebook group and be able to invite your friends to events and to check out the music.  If you're more into email, you could show the music to your friends, family, or co-workers and if they like it offer to put their name on our mailing list, which makes them elgible for discounts on new music and merchandise, contests, and to lets them know when Cougar Magnum is coming to town.  It's really up to you to decide your involvement. The biggest thing is spreading the word about new music and any upcoming shows in your area. Of course, if you have other ways you can help, let us know.

What will I get out of it?
For starters, you'll get our genuine thanks, and most likely some hugs or handshakes (if you're interested). The road can be a lonely place and it's nice to have friendly faces in a new place. Also, we'll almost always grant you free admission to shows that you've helped to promote (we say almost because some clubs have strict policies, but it's not usually a problem).

How do I join up?
If you want to be part of this important team, you can join up by submitting your information in the form after clicking CONTACT on the top of this page we'll contact you for your suggestions with ways you can help.

If you would like to join Team Magnum Force, earn free stuff and help Cougar Magnum out by donating your ideas, time and/or energy, just send an email to cougarmagnummail@gmail.com, with the subject heading "Team Magnum Force."  Don't forget to give your name, city/state and, of course, your ideas and how you would like to help!

Hello Friends and Family:

Our summer has been filled with sunshine, cool breezes, the smell of tequila and sounds from the ocean. After our tour van slowed to a stop in late May, we've all been working part and full time jobs, taking it easy, and playing some local shows. We played a particularly rowdy rock show in Chapel Hill, right down the street from Michael Jordan's old dorm room. And we have our first acoustic appearance coming up on August 3rd in Raleigh. We've never played a gig without our big loud amplifiers and full drumset, so we're really looking forward to how this night is going to go. It's either going to be very excellent or very terrible; I'm not sure which. Nonetheless, we will post and distribute the audio and post some videos on youtube. If you can't be there, you'll be able to check it out from the comfort of your own couch.

I decided that I'm going to go to some toystores to find a mini electric guitar and buy it for our cat, Momo. Then I want steal a disposable camera from CVS and use up the whole things taking pictures of Momo holding the guitar in different rock-cat positions. I'll post some pics and possibly use some of them in album art someday.

We just got word that we'll be playing a wedding sometime in mid-September. That should be interesting--a nice chance to learn all sorts of strange cover tunes. I see her in a smoky room, the smell of wine and cheap perfume...maybe not.

Here are some other dates:
Jul 26: Front Row - Wake Forest, North Carolina
Aug 3: Deep South Bar - Raleigh, North Carolina
Aug 16: The Pour House Music Hall - Raleigh, North Carolina
Aug 28: The Lantern - Blacksburg, Virginia
Aug 30: The Irish Cue - Cornelius, North Carolina
Sep 13: Sadlack's Heroes - Raleigh, North Carolina

Because we were on the road for almost the whole Spring, we didn't get a chance to book as many summer gigs as we wanted. Hopefully next summer, we'll be able to play about 30 dates with sand on our feet and salt in our hair.

For those that are interested, we've worked on some new Cougar material that may appear in some of our upcoming shows. Also, the youtube channel is almost complete and will debut in the next couple weeks.

If you want us to send you a CD of some of the music we played on our Spring Tour, just send us an email with your address and we'll get some free goodies.

Anyway, that's all I got for now...If I think of anything else that's important I'll let you know.

Peace.

-Brandon and Cougar Magnum
