I know there are still a few more weeks left before the year is out but as I don't foresee any major musical triumphs before then and in keeping with the spirit of all the year-end lists coming out, here are my top 5 electronic/dance albums of the past 12 months:

5. daft punk: alive 2007
after the duo's hugely disappointing last full-length album, this collection of their biggest tracks - mixed, filtered, distorted and edited together live during one their paris concerts - could signal one of the biggest comebacks of all time.

4. digitalism: idealism
this german-made electronic-dance (with crunchy guitars) crossover was far better than that annoyingly unpronounceable justice album that's been popping up on all the critics' year-end lists.

3. m.i.a.: kala
m.i.a. accomplished the seemingly impossible - improving on her debut, 2005's 'arular' - with the fiercest, most cross-cultural party record of the year. the genius of first singles 'boyz' and 'bird flu' were enough for her to make this list.

2. trentemøller: the trentemøller chronicles
denmark's anders trentemøller buys some time before his much anticipated sophomore release with this, a two-disc collection of his own (some of it unreleased) material and remixes that he was commissioned for. everything from downtempo ambient electronica to full-on tech-house masterpieces. my favorite electronica producer of the past 12+ months.

1. burial: untrue
the mysterious dubstep producer didn't even wait for the accolades for his amazing debut to die down before he released his second album. the spookiest, most unnerving dance record we're likely to hear for a while, "untrue" is 21st century soul music with heavy doses of 2step garage, r&b, dn'b and lo-fi electronics. an instant classic and the best album of 2007.
