Hello out there! I just put together a little video clip of the European tour I did with Kevin Costner and Modern West last month. It's short, but you'll get the flavor! It was an incredible opportunity, the guys were a blast, and the crowds might have been even better...Enjoy!

I have had the privilege of joining Kevin Costner & Modern West for a few shows here and there this summer. We had wonderful shows in Iowa, Minnesota, and Montana. Sadly, our festival date in Camrose, Alberta brought the tour to a pretty tragic end. The mainstage at the festival collapsed in a sudden windstorm. As a group, we got a little scratched up and lost some equipment, but we are all safe. Unfortunately, there were fatalities at the event. Thanks so much for all the kind words I have received. My husband, Park, who plays guitar in Modern West and got pretty scratched up himself, wrote a beautiful note about the event on the Modern West website. I echo his words.

Send some love to Camrose...

I was in the studio tonight, and I heard about MJ on the way. I was shocked and overcome; it is such a huge loss for the world ~ musicians, songwriters, dancers, artists, and fans alike. I was still crying when we pulled up the tune I planned to put vocals on tonight. It's called Can't Stop the Radio, and the first verse goes like this: This is my alibi
my reason why
I do the things I do
I hear a symphony
playing just for me And every word it speaks is true
We were meant to be beautiful
Like a whisper in the dark
Is it really so unusual to feel that pounding
in your heart~

Can't stop the radio...

I don't know if I would've been able to pull it together enough to sing anything worthwhile except that suddenly, this song felt like a tribute, not just to pop music, but to the artists who make it. Michael Jackson has been an influence on me on so many levels. In his hands, pop music was an art form. His intensity and his genius were singular. His gift was that we all feel like we knew his heart.

MJ was the first artist whose music videos I remember seeing on MTV. I learned to sing background vocals jammin' to Liberian Girl and Smooth Criminal and We are the World. Only two weeks ago, I stayed up until 4 am scouring youtube for the awards show where he debuted the moonwalk. I recently rediscovered Man in the Mirror. When I remember Michael Jackson, I will remember his delivery of these words:

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
take a look at yourself and make a change

That's the symphony I keep hearing. My alibi.

A lovely Cleveland concert-goer posted this video of me sitting in with Modern West in the great city of Cleveland. Gritty, clubby, & delicious.

Mellow Gold

Jack Silverman

On her new Music for Lovers and Fighters, Sara Beck conjures a dreamy pop-soul hybrid that's a refreshingly understated alternative to the hyper-emotive, melisma-happy dreck that dominates pop and R&B radio. (People do still listen to radio, right?) It helps that she has a lovely, airy voice that can seduce you without smacking you over the head with a sledgehammer. Hell, don't just take our word for it—Stevie Wonder was so taken with her rendition of “Amazing Grace” at a memorial service that he invited her onstage during his December 2007 Sommet Center show to perform one of her own songs, complete with a Stevie harmonica solo. That song, “To Love Somebody,” is among the 13 mostly upbeat tracks Beck wrote or co-wrote for the album. Other highlights include the horn-punctuated “Pieces of Sunlight,” “Where the Sidewalk Ends” (based on the Shel Silverstein poem of the same name) and “Get Out of My Head,” featuring some trippy touches by her husband/co-producer, Park Chisolm.

Stagecoach - Modern West

I joined Modern West for a cameo at two shows this past weekend, one of which was Stagecoach, California's big country festival. I got to sing a beautiful duet with Kevin called "Let Me Be the One," written by John Coinman. It's the last tune in the video. Enjoy!

Hello!  Two weeks to go before the big album release party!  In the meantime, I'll be posting some fun new music...

Up today: Man Enough, a tune I co-wrote with Chuck Cannon and Lari White, the first couple of hip music-making in Nashvegas. This song has struck a chord with people since the day we wrote it; at different times, it's been on hold for Carrie Underwood, Trisha Yearwood, and Gretchen Wilson. We did a couple of demo versions of it along the way, but when I decided to put it on my record, I started from scratch using a live version of my band playing the tune with just Wurlitzer, drums, bass, and vocals. Even in the  final version, there are no guitars. But we were able to convince string wizard Chris Carmichael to arrange and perform a virtual string quartet on the song, and now I'm not sure how it existed before Chris' strings!
The background vocals on the album are all me, but I am so excited to have a couple of amazing Nashville R&B ladies covering those parts for me on April 30th....

Let me know what you think!
