Happy birthday to me! I turn 24 today. Not too much different in my life, but I am making some progress on a couple of fronts. I've got a car, it's not one I wanted, but it's a car. It needs a new windshield and I need to learn to drive stick. I've also been exercising and watching my diet for the past couple months, and I've dropped about 15 lbs. I'm also starting to get the muscle back in my arms and back, and rebuilding my endurance, and that feels pretty good.

There was a really big moth in my living room tonight, and it flew into a halogen lamp. At first it kind of fluttered around, then went right into the bulb. As a delayed reaction, there was a puff of smoke, and then a minute or so later a really strong, foul burning smell. I had to strike a match and light a big scented candle to mask the stench. Who knew a measley dead bug could smell so bad!

I ran across this great tribute to Kurt Vonnegut tonight, and I wanted to share it with everybody:

I found it very poignant and touching.

Kurt Vonnegut, my favorite author and one of my personal heros, died today at the age of 84. The title of this post is a little joke and tribute to him, he said the same of Isaac Asimov at his funeral, and expressed the wish that someone would say that about him when he's dead in his book Timequake. He was a keen observer and satirist of us crazy human beings and the lives we live, and his books were always a joy, to me, to read. The other thing I would like to say in tribute to him is that he made the world a better place, at least a little bit. I think as a humanist, he would appreciate that (and the heaven joke).

Well, living in Minnesota means crazy weather. Two or three weeks ago, we had temps in the 70s and 80s, and it looked like spring was finally here to stay. Not so. Today we're getting our second accumulating snow fall since then. Craziness. I'd been having a craving for scrambled eggs and bacon, so I made some when I got up this morning, since I had the day off. Yes, I finally had a day off, after nine straight days of work. I did go home an hour and a half early on Easter, which was good, since I went to a concert. My favorite band, Hot Rod Circuit, played the Varsity Theater. The show was short, because the bands arrived late, but it was really fun.

Well, today was pay day. That's about the only positive thing I can say about it. I worked 1-9, it was insane! One person left early, another called in sick, we were really busy and had all kinds of problems. All the customers were crabby and impatient (ok, not all, but it seemed like most). I wanted to kill a couple of my co-workers, and we had a really slow substitute pharmacist from another store. On top of all that, my back hurt really badly for pretty much my whole shift. I spent almost my whole shift at outwindow and drive-thru cashier (which isn't supposed to happen and doesn't make use of my abilities). I was pissed off and in pain for most of the afternoon/night. It was not a fun day.

Well, I went out for my second run today. The second one is always hard, because you're still in pain from the first one. I started off not feeling well, but then I broke through the wall and actually managed to make a half-decent jog. I'm still miles from where I want to be, but the vast improvement over just a couple of days was really encouraging. I know I worked myself a lot harder because I was much sweatier and my face was all right, and I could feel the burn in my calf muscles. It hurt, but it felt good.

I've officially begun to restart my exercise routine. Yesterday I went for a jog and did a modest number of push-ups and sit-ups. I found out just how out of shape I am, and it makes me sad. It also makes me determined to stick with this (finally), because I want to get better and feel better about myself and my body. Immediately after I got back from my "run" yesterday, I had a kind of runner's high going, I don't know if it was the endorphins or the lack of oxygen or both, or what, but it felt good. I felt good and about ready to keel over at the same time. There wasn't too much pain yesterday, but today I'm feeling it. The fronts of my thighs hurt like hell and walking down stairs really sucks. Reminds me of soccer season in high school.

Every once in a while, something comes along that kind of puts things in perspective. Tonight at work, I talked to a guy that has cancer, lost an eye, has rods in his hands, arms and back, and has his fingers screwed up in some way. Really made me fell kind of fortunate, and like any problems I have really aren't that bad.

It's my birthday today, I'm now 23 years old. Not going to get into all the different feelings that brings on, but I will talk about my weekend. Went out to dinner a couple of times, Outback and Famous Daves, saw Borat, which was really funny. Got some good presents, V For Vendetta on dvd, a Dane Cook cd, a couple of model kits, and some new jeans and boxers (which were badly needed). Also made rice crispie bars last night, going to bring some in to work today. I have to work 2-10, kind of sucks, but that's being an adult for ya.
