Hello folks,
I noticed it has been almost a year since I last wrote anything here.. disgraceful!!
It's been a busy, but productive time. All kinds of projects on the go. My work as artistic director of the BA in Scottish music at the RSAMD started last October. There has been as much for me to learn there as the students! Laid a lot of groundwork for this coming academic year and look forward to some serious project creation with the students.
Did another couple of documentaries with BBC Scotland, once again a joy to work on.
Have been asked to do some narration for the telly since the documentaries came out, and I have enjoyed that too. (There's a pattern forming here...)
Worked on the new albums of Mark Knopfler and Paolo Nutini.. Paolo's now out.. Mark's still to come. Both experiences hugely fun and inspiring.
Did loads of gigs with Aly Bain, played things with Kris Drever and John McCusker, Eddi Reader and Karen Matheson, made a new series of Transatlantic Sessions.. did 2 live performances of the same..
One of the highlights of the year was getting to write the soundtrack to a BBC Natural world documentary about Loch Maree/Ben Eigh in the Scottish Highlands.
My childhood ambition to be a zoologist has never left me, so the opportunity to write music based on my favourite topic was amazing. I'll let you all know when it is screening.
I'm off back to Michigan with Annie for a wee holiday in a few weeks. some more wildlife photography and kayaking, and lots of learning how to BBQ.
A busy year ahead too.. still haven't done my solo album, going in to the studio with Aly Bain in about a week's time, still haven't lost the weight I wanted to lose.. but hey.. I'm trying. The annual Scottish tour is coming up in August/September and the Christmas Shows are booked in to the Queens Hall already! Dates and times to follow for anyone interested.
So that's about it.. a wee potted run down of the year's highlights.
Crombie is still doing grand.. about 90 pounds weight and loads of saliva.
Sadly one of the year's low points was losing our other wee dog Holland. We miss him terribly.
At this very moment in time, I'm in the "Horizontal Office" about to get up and head for Glasgow and the Academy. I have some extremely sticky glue to help keep the sensible hat from slipping.. but it doesn't always work!!
Hope all is well with you all,
have a wonderful summer, and I'll see you down the road!!
Yours aye,
Phil.
