Wow, it's finally here, the Candle recordings are done. In total it was 11 full days with about 5 or 6 half days of extra tracking. Today was the final leg in our chapter of recording. We recorded the choir to "prisoner song," which is now in the running to being the final track of the album. The choir of 12 included:

Kevin Coons
Ross Major
Traven Marks
Christi Marks
Andy Tobey (Mr. MirrorWar himself)
Billy Wimmer (FBC Youth Group Singer)
Randy Coons (Team Captain)
Rachel Spotten
Nolan Perrry (The Mixing Master)
Daivd Lovejoy (Mr. Thick)
Paul Frankel
Aubrey Prophet

Ross led the choir with SK1 and in total we repeat the medley 8 times spanning over two minutes. The choir sounds really good and we added tracks of the gang talking, a regular "with my heart special." Now it's Nolan's turn. And by that I mean Nolan is going to start mixing all 12 songs. This will probably take 2 weeks of work (even for Nolan.) Then we will have it pressed and the release date we are looking at right now is March 22nd Saturday at Downtown Brew. More on that later. Here are the songs we recorded. Recording Dates included Dec 16th 2007 thru Jan 6th 2008.

1. Pennies In A Well
2. Say Goodnight
3. Pretty Please
4. So It Goes
5. 8th And Pine
6. Let Me Love You
7. Lonesome Wind
8. Santa Cruz
9. Keeping My Feet On The Ground
10. Hotel Eyes
11. Prisoner Song
12. Cast It Away

Yesterday was a wild day. Let's see, well Kevin, Ross, Rachel, Nolan, Jon and I all went down to Lompoc to take Candle promo pics with William. We meet at South Side Coffee and took pictures inside the coffee house as well as around the alleys and in front of outdoor paintings. The pictures below are from my camera, so hold tight because William's will be on the way shortly. Then we spent the rest of the afternoon at Certain Sparks studio working on the album. We had Randall sing on "let me love you," he also added two keyboard tracks. Randall studio is incredible! He has three separate rooms with tons of equipment as well as huge mixers lots of computers and TVs too. He gave us a full tour of the studio and gave Kevin and I valuable shortcuts to use when using Pro Tools. He knows his stuff and someday we would like to record an entire album down their with him. After al that we went over too South Side Coffee for an evening of Eager Meek and Crash Plastic. Like always everyone in Lompoc came out to see the boys. Ta Ta was dancing like a maniac and had his hair all curled up. It was an amazing day. Lots of pictures.

Ok, it's is getting near the end and that is where things can get a little rough. Yesterday we went to Ross's church here in Paso to record using their grand piano and organ. We recorded piano to "pretty please," "say goodnight," "hotel eyes," and "8th and Pine." We took a lunch break to good old KFC/A&W and when we returned to record organ (which we were all very excited about) pro tools decided to freeze and cause us problems. After about 3 hours of trouble shooting we finally got it up and running. We then went back to the church and recorded organ to "cast it away," "prisoner song," and one other that I'm forgetting at the moment. Then we took a dinner break and reconvened at 6pm in the apartment for work on the blasted "prisoner song." Prisoner Song is over 6minutes long and we added a Jon solo, a Ross solo, and finally a Kevin solo to the ending. We also add Glockenspiel as well as SK1 and banjo. That song still might need some trumpet more vocals and maybe even a little bit more, just a little bit more. Today Candle is heading down to Lompoc to do some promo pics (hopefully not in the rain). William A. Clark has agreed to take our pictures and we are going to meet up with Randall and have him add some vocals to "let me love you." Candle is also playing three shows in a row real soon. The first is new years eve at the Mormon dance in AG, then the next day an acoustic show at the SLO Clubhouse for a song writer showcase, and then finally on the 2nd with Sparrows Gate and Lauren Mulderrig and Downtownbrew. Enjoy the rain and get ready for some Candle.

Looks like we can finally see the end of recording as we have now started and or finished all the songs.  Yesterday we recorded "keeping my feet on the ground." It is completely done and turned out well. That song is another acoustic guitar driven song, with bass, drums, organ, Kevin vocals, cool Jon harmonies and a great harmonica hook. I'm very pleased with that songs and it is a keeper for the new album. Ross has some working titles for the album which include, "see you sometime," and "let it come." Kevin gets final say on that topic, but will we see what happens with all that. Traven came over yesterday to listen in at the recordings. He also took some outdoor shots of the us just hanging loose. Today is piano day. We are going to record Piano to 7 songs at Ross church here in Paso Robles. We hope to finish up all the instrument adding recording to the songs by tonight, so that we can go to Lompoc tomorrow to take pictures and record with Randall at Certain Sparks. Basically "Prisoner Song" is all that remains for major work left. We need Kelly's Trumpet work for 4 songs. Possibly more fiddle and more female vocals on others. Enjoy funny pictures.

Merry Christmas from the Candle recording team! I hope everyone's Christmas was filed with joy, laughter and a reminder of what Christmas is all about "The Birth of Santa," (A direct Kevin Coons quote.) No but seriously, Christmas is about remembering the gift of Jesus Christ to this messed up world. Jesus is the reason for the season and I hope that all of you spent time out of your Christmas day to pray and thank God for the gift of his son. Well back to the important stuff…Christmas Eve (Day 8) we recorded almost everything to "Hotel Eyes." Including electric guitars, bass, mandolin, Kevin vocals and Ross vocals. We worked a half day Christmas Eve and the rest of the day was spent with families topped off by the ABC candle light service at 11pm and a 1am dinner at Denny's (video up soon.) Today recording resumes with work on the new song "keeping my feet on the ground," as well as continued work on the other songs as well. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Yesterday was a long day. Let's see. Well Saturday day I worked from 8-5 at Sculpterra. I had to label and capsule 40 cases of wine, and while I was doing that, Jon recorded Ross and Kevin at the apartment. He recorded mandolin for "hotel eyes," and "say goodnight." They also recorded bass and eclectic guitars for all of "let me love you." Kevin also recorded instruments and vocals for "santa cruz." In the evening (when I returned) we had George Major come over and he added cello to "so it goes," and "santa cruz." We also recorded Jon and Ross beautiful "let me love you" unison ohhs and ahhs. Then Pat and Andrea came over at about 10pm and they added some really nice Kapiano-Special vocal lines to the beautiful "santa cruz." Santa Cruz is pretty much complete now minus the accordion and possible piano by Rosstifer. Today we decided to have a day off and do some Christmas shopping. We are going to start up again tomorrow morning bright and early at nine am. Here is a list of the songs that we have started and are almost completely recorded.

1. Pennies In A Well
2. Pretty Please
3. Hotel Eyes (needs lots of more work)
4. The Lonesome Wind
5. Let Me Love You
6. 8th and Pine
7. So It Goes
8. Santa Cruz
9. Keeping My Feet On The Ground (still need to start
10. Prisoner Song
11. Cast It Away
12. Say Goodnight (lots more work left)

Believe or not but today was the sixth day of Candle recording. Time is either going by really fast or really slow, at this point I'm having a tough time telling how much we have done and or have left to do. Well today was a semi-productive day, well a pretty productive day at the least. We recorded drums to, "hotel eyes," "say goodnight," "prisoner song," and "let me love you." By 12:00 pm I left to label and capsule some wine for Sculpterra for this busy Christmas weekend. While I was away, Nolan, Jon and Kevin recorded acoustic guitars for the songs mentioned above, and Jon added bass. Then I returned and we added vocals to "say goodnight," and "let me love you." Patrick and Andrea came by at about 10pm and we played them the best of the best of the recorded songs. We will diffidently have them sing or do something cool for these songs, I also called Randall (of Le Petit Protest) and he is going to record with us for the song "let me love you," next Friday after the Crash Plastic show. Tomorrow I have to work at Sculpterra, but Jon, Ross, and Kevin are going to add lots of instruments to the songs that we recorded. Stay the course because this Candle album we be completed and it is going to sound amazing when it is all said and done. Pictures below…you know the drill.

Yesterday was a very good recording day. Jon Wilson came up to Paso from San Luis and recorded his bass parts to, "the lonesome wind," "pretty please," "pennies in a well," "so it goes," and "8th and pine." Bass certainly adds a lot that much is true. Jon also added some sweet vocal harmonies on "pennies in a well," and "the lonesome wind." Jon's got the country harmonies down well, he can sure belt out the blues. Rachel Spotten stopped by and sang her dialogue section on "the lonesome wind," and added harmonies on "pretty please" as well. Those songs are sounding super full and they are almost complete. We also jammed out Kevin's other new song called "Hotel Eyes." Ross helped Kevin come up with some good chorus chords and we added a break and bridge to that song. Kevin also played us "keeping my feet on the ground," and we are going to record that probably at the beginning of next week. Today I am recording drums to "say goodnight," "let me love you," " hotel eyes," and "prisoner song" then we can add the instruments on top of that. Our goal for the weekend is to complete "say goodnight," "prisoner song," "hotel eyes," and  "santa cruz," by Sunday. I am very pleased with our progress and it looks like we will have about 12 or 13 songs to choose to put on this new candle album. The songs are turning out great, and so far our we have not had any major set back or equipment problems.

Another day of recording is complete. This was a very strange day for our team of musicians. First off we jammed and worked out structure parts for "Prisoner Song. (taking a good two hours)" Then we recorded drums for "Say Goodnight," and Prisoner Song," only to find out that I recorded the drum parts wrong to "Say Goodnight" and also we had to do lots of cool editing to fix the 6 minute long drumming to "Prisoner Song." We did add lap-steel and Ross vocals to "8th and Pine," which is now almost complete. The highlight of the day was our three-hour break into the country. Kevin and I took David to Creston because he wanted to see "the real" country, he belongs in the country (with that big beard and that folkier than thou attitude that he sports all over town.) We walked around Creston and got a few "Howdy's" thrown our way than we went to the Creston general Store, the schoolhouse, the church, and finally the bar, not particularly in that order. It was a struggle in the studio today but we did get needed things accomplished. Tomorrow is our date with Jon Ash Wilson. He's going to record bass to the seven-recorded songs. See you tomorrow.

Fiddle! We recorded Fiddle last night with Zach Angels and it added a lot to our Candle recordings. Zach and I went to Jr. High at NCCS together and he also grew up in the back roads of Paso Robles together as well. We used to ride ATVs in the river bed and shot BBs at little innocent critters. Those were the days. So anyway, I called him yesterday and he came over last night and recorded Fiddle to "Pennies In A Well," "The Lonesome Wind," and a brand new song called "8th And Pine." He is also planning on coming back next Wednesday to add more Fiddle for the next batch of recordings, and he is going to play with Candle at Downtown Brew on January 2nd. Yesterday day we finished up "Pennies In A Well," then we started another new one now called "So It Goes." That song is a predominately acoustic driven darky/folky number with an enormous ending.  Then we worked on "Band of Horses Song," now called "Cast it Away." Ross and David did some well needed OOHs and AHHs in that one and each one  of them (including Kevin) added a different guitar part to the song. Also, yesterday we went to Rachel's Christmas Party, where we sang Christmas Carols and made big time fools of ourselves once again. Today we are going to add lap-steel to "8th and Pine" and probably go to the Major's home for some Piano and Cello recordings. Enjoy the photos!
