So it's been a long time coming, but A MAJOR MINORITY is finally here! This is Black Element's debut album and it's available for free.

I put a lot of work into this album, including the beats for four tracks ("The Stickup Kid," "It's All Relative (Family First)," "Can't Call It" and "Headaches") as well as one little interlude jawn. The album as a whole is dope, and has been getting a lot of coverage on hip-hop websites like Okayplayer and 2DopeBoys.com.

I've got a few tracks on there including the intro, Black Element's "Can't Call It,"and Jelani's "Pain."

The mixtape also has some of my favorite hip-hop artists on it such as Akrobatik and Guilty Simpson among others.

Thanks to my friend Sean, I was introduced to a guy named Jim who runs a Boston-focused music/lifestyle blog called That Hottness. We were both really drunk when we first met, so it took a while for us to actually link up.

Anyway, Jim got in contact with me a few days ago, and I did a little interview for the blog. I also gave him a couple of mp3s. It's a really great site. Most blogs suck, but this guy actually has his shit together and is covering a lot of interesting Boston-based music, art and culture. Definitely worth poking around on That Hottness.

Cheers, Durk

I regret to inform you that Fuzzy Coconuts has been canceled by The Cambridge Licensing Commission and the Cambridge Police. The American Legion I paid to host the event turned out to not have the proper liquor or entertainment licenses to hold events like mine on their property. They only informed me of this last week after running into trouble with another outdoor dance party. While they were willing to try to make it work with the city, I had to do all the leg work.

Over the last few days I did everything I could to save the event. I applied for special liquor and entertainment licenses at Cambridge City Hall and appealed directly to the Cambridge police, but it wasn't enough.

Thanks to everyone who supported this event. The sheer number of people who were willing to come amazed me. I know this is a disappointment, but I am not giving up on throwing parties like this. As long as y'all are still looking for an alternative to the usual bars and clubs, I will keep working on something different.

Cheers,
Ryan Durkin

So I played at DJ Ghostdad's Do It Again night in Cambridge this past weekend. Long story short, we rocked that shit tag team style, I drank a bunch of Grape Crushes and spent all my hard earned pay, and in the last half hour a bunch of skinheads and jamaicans showed up after a ska show and we played reggae and dancehall for them. Oh yeah and everyone was dancing in the street.

Current mood:  grateful
Who Said Gangsters Don’t Dance?!?! is getting a little local press here in Boston. Isabelle Davis of The Weekly Dig did a writeup of my Jay-Z remix EP in their first April issue of 2008."

"He lives in Mission Hill and used to be a mailman. He makes music using samples and it does not sound anything like Greg Gillis or Kanye West. He has taken Jay-Z’s semi-not-really-but-it-is-autobiographical soul-sample heavy American Gangster and made it synthtacular and club ready."
