A VOICE OF INSPIRATION - Emma Schmidt (Heidelberg Leader)

05May08

RICHELLE Boer is a singer-songwriter with a difference.

Like her contemporaries, Boer, 25, wants to strike it big and make a career out of her passion.

But she stands out from the pack in her aim to reach out to others and make a positive impact on society through her music.

The Burgundy St cafe worker is sick of the negativity of today's music, and wants to have a positive influence on young women through uplifting, inspiring lyrics and melodies.

"My passion isn't just to become a pop star, I want to actually do something positive," Boer said.

Reminiscent of 1980s band The Sundays, her alternative pop songs are the catchy kind that stick in your head.

But although Alanis Morissette is one of her main influences, you won't find any harsh, negative lyrics in Boer's songs.

"I'm a really happy person in general, and I find it really hard not to write from personal experience," she said.

Like most young women, Boer has struggled with self-esteem at times, and she wants to reach out to other young women with similar struggles through her music.

"I love how music has the power to influence people. I write a lot about big issues, self-esteem, just being yourself. I think that there really needs to be some more positive stuff out there," she said.

Originally from Benalla in Victoria's north-east, Boer moved to Melbourne in 2004 and began gigging with guitarist and producer Josh Fuhrmeister.

She now has a full band, opening for artists such as Shannon Noll, Adam Brand and Ash Grunwald, and will be opening for Aussie music icons Mark Seymour and James Reyne at the Ferntree Gully Hotel at the end fo the month.

Boer has also just released her first EP, The Sun and the Moon and has a regular spot at the Elwood Lounge.

I find it really hard to describe my music. My writing is so easily influenced by so many factors; my mood, what kind of day it is outside, the last song I got stuck in my head..if I had to pick a genre I'd probably say its usually something like alternative pop (hows that for a contradicting term)...with a folk edge to it.

Music has always been in my blood. I'll blame dad for it. Some of my earliest memories are of him back in Benalla where I grew up thumping out these old hymns on our out of tune piano, singin' his heart out :-) So I used to sit up beside him as a 6 year old and make up harmonies. I just thought thats what people did :-)

Back then I was listening to all my parents old vinyl records. They were still stuck on the beetles, the beach boys and keith green..I loved it! Even back then I knew I was going to be like them one day and that dream has never left me.

Its been a hard road though and for most of my growing up that dream seemed fairly ironic as I was probably the most shy an introverted girl you could come across. It was like my biggest dream and worst fear were the same thing. I don't know why. Fear of the 'unknown' or of being exposed..but you cant live like that and really call it living! Especially when everyone has so much to offer!! So one day I just decided to change.

I picked up mums old nylon string at 17 and there started my love affair with the acoustic. I didn't have anyone to teach me and to be honest I really didn't care abut music theory, which is probably bad but kind of cool cos I've never gotten stuck in "following the rules". I just started writing..and writing and writing...

...Now Im 24. Three years ago I moved to Melbourne to chase this crazy dream. It has cost me in so many ways, but I've learnt a hell of a lot and I will never regret it.

I don't think I was ever meant for the comfortable life style. I don't think I could stand myself if I'd just taken the easy road and gone to Uni, got that secure job, money and all the rest of it. If you're born for a cause you just have to do it, and if you never make it you at least die trying! There's not a lot that gets to me more than watching someone go through life knowing they're missing what they were made for when we have so much freedom in Australia to do these things!

Ive got an E.P. coming out in a few weeks called "the Sun and the Moon". (SO excited!!) This ones been such a long time coming. But the thing is, if you really wanna see something happen you can do it. I don't know what it is for you, but just don't sit there waiting for someone to give you permission cos if you dont start working towards it now, when will you?

This thing was meant to be me working on my bio...but I feel like Ive just written a sermon or something lol! Just remember, you only have one shot at life. No regrets ok?!!
