Gents will bring back manners

MIND YOUR Ps & Qs: SR Gents
THE bloated figure of Manchester music stumbles drunkenly out of a grubby student nightclub, still clutching its pint of cheap, nasty lager.
It utters some rather crude profanities and wolf whistles at some girls nearby.
Despite its stupor, it somehow manages to stagger home, bellowing Oasis songs at the top of its voice, and eventually arrives at its front door.
But it’s too late, fatal inebriation has taken hold, and the body of Manchester music passes out on the doorstep, puking up on its best Ben Sherman shirt.
Hmm – not a pretty sight is it? Yet, thankfully, this is the boorish, bloke-ish image of Manc music that new band SR Gents are determined to eradicate.
Based in Salford, the dandy-pop three-piece are not only one of this city’s most enchanting new musical prospects, they also double up as a relentless campaign for old-school gentlemanly decency.
Arriving for their CityLife rendezvous on a sunny August afternoon, the trio – comprising singer Jules Frot, drummer/trumpet player Peri Eskell and bass player Gary Kinghorn – certainly look the part: all dressed in smart black suits and Stetson hats. SR Gents are the very embodiment of old-school charm and etiquette.
Their language is full of quaint anachronisms (‘Sir’, ‘Squire’, ‘Tally ho!’), their manners impeccable, and if you spend more than 10 minutes with them, you start to feel like you’ve wandered into an episode of Jeeves and Wooster.
Manners, quite evidently, cost naff all; and it is SR Gents’ mission statement to make the rest of Manchester music realise that fact.
“I see it as this band’s job to uphold the image of the gentleman,” declares drummer Peri.
“Gone are the days when you think of the stereotypical Englishman in your head, someone who’s all dapper and well-mannered and opening doors for the lady. That image has been replaced by the image of the lager lout with the shaved head.

"The worst thing is that image is now recognised the world over."
“When it comes to Manchester music, that blokey, beery reputation is really quite hard to avoid,” adds bassist Gary.
“But who says you can’t be in a band and be a gentleman at the same time? We’re here to put manners back on the Manchester music map.”
SR Gents, it’s fair to say, do not fit the stereotype of the blokey Manchester guitar band. Formed two years ago, the guitar-pop trio have been quietly charming the local scene with their old-school ways, and a major breakthrough could soon be imminent.
Despite early accusations of being a novelty act, it seems the dapper trio are finally grabbing attention for their music as well as their unique gentlemanly perspective.

Dandy-ish
Trading in dandy-ish jazzy guitar-pop, they bring to mind The Libertines jamming with Serge Gainsbourg while chugging on a Gauloise with Edith Piaf; their songs full of bruised hearts, psychosexual melodramas and quaint old-school romanticism.
This romanticism is largely down to one man: Frenchman Jules Frot, the band’s singer, songwriter and all-round bon viveur poster boy.
Born and raised in Normandy, in northern France, he relocated to Manchester five years ago, because, he explains: “Manchester seemed like the ultimate English city. I’d lived in the French countryside my whole life, in towns where there is a tiny population. Manchester seemed just full of possibilities.”
Indeed it did. Within a few weeks of ‘exploring the city’s nightlife’, Jules had made lifelong friends in Peri and Gary, two aspiring musicians who shared a similar meticulous passion for all things old-school.
In a city where notions of brute laddism appear to have grown extra muscles, thanks to new bands like The Courteeners, a band like SR Gents were never going to find things plain sailing. Yet that is all part of the band’s unique charm: like the last gang of romantics in town, SR Gents have thrown themselves with admirable gusto into the local gigging circuit.
Live shows have veered from the truly awful (“We once played in Jabez Clegg, and the crowd was horrific. We left the venue in tears,” shudders Peri), to far more joyful experiences at the Koffee Pot’s Teatime Sessions gigs (‘A really appreciative crowd. Not at all cynical’).
Indeed, shedding all cynicism is surely the most vital part of the SR Gents love affair: with gorgeous escapist odes like Mademoiselle and Stamping Feet, SR Gents are seeking out the eternal romantic in all of us; never afraid to look high, wide and even a bit pretentious in their quest to sate the heart’s desires.
“It’s all about escape,” says Jules. “When people see our shows, or listen to our CDs, hopefully we can take them out of their surroundings.

"That’s the power of music. We want our music to transport the listener, to take them from their everyday surroundings, so they could almost be back in the sixties, drinking coffee in some small cafe in Paris. We want to create a romantic atmosphere.”
“We get a few jibes calling us pretentious,” says Gary on the defensive. “And that’s because we obviously don’t fit the stereotype of a Manchester band. “But that’s just being narrow-minded about music. You’ve got to open up your heart a bit if you want to understand this band.”
After some initial scepticism, Manchester is thankfully far more inclined to open up its heart these days. But what about the rest of those unconverted? You’ll be glad to hear SR Gents have a strict long-term plan to spread their gentlemanly message.
“You know that TV programme, Ladette to Lady?” asks Peri. “Well, I think we could probably do the male version of that show. It’d be a huge hit! Everything from table manners, to how to treat a lady, to buying the perfect cufflinks – we’d have it all covered. We’ll wipe out the image of the beery British lad before you know it.”

it can be found here with a lovely piccie, or wrapping some chips in a chippy near you.

Issue 2.
Jan 2009.
A little bit of gentlemenly sophistication and a soupcon of Parisian style.
Welcome to the New Year.
A shivering gentlemen’s h.q. brings you the warmest greetings for the New Year. Over the festive period, we have not been busy little bees, but two of us have been intrepid explorers, and Sir Garington has managed to get out of bed and visit the fridge via the cocktail cabinet. Mr Julien has returned from Paris with one of these new fangled mobile telephone things. Sadly it does everything else except phone as he has no credit on the blooming thing…that’s technology for you!

We have finally managed to finish the blockbuster that is our new video. Whilst it hasn’t taken as long as the Flaming Lips ‘Christmas on Mars’, it did require a little help from Mr Lucas to finish it. With any luck, if you click on this link it will take you there…..

The mixing for our new E.P. is going along at snails pace. This is due to Sir Garington being unable to find his way past the severely depleted cocktail cabinet and actually drive that mixing desk.

Lord Perecles is gearing up for a bit of moonlighting on Mr Barrabus’s new recording, with the trumpet tootling taking place over the next week or so. We can only hope that there will be plenty of buttered crumpets on offer to keep him in the manner to which he would like to become accustomed.

Later in the month we shall be leaving the love and warmth (and pool table with one dead cushion) of Blueprint, washing the cobwebs and road salt off the trusty Bentley and heading out to a town near you (or maybe not if you don’t live near these towns...)
Hopefully see you down at one of these.
Merci

SRGents.
Performing original tunes and arrangements of classic songs, with sophistication and Parisian style.

Welcome to the first edition of the SRGents newsletter!
The 7th November saw the gentlemen making their Welsh debut at Aberlesquewyth, hosted by the delectable Miss Rosie Cotton at the Runway club (RAFA), Aberystwyth. Mr. Garinton polished the Bentley and Messrs Pericles and Julien loaded the trunk. They were joined on their journey over Snowdonia by the rather wonderful Louis Barrabas, who complained not one bit at being forced to endure Garington's mixed tape of '80's classics and tales of the time he met Sir Joe Strummer!

Joining the gents and Mr B. in their musical meanderings were Aber favourites, Quercus Burlesque and The Drip Dry Man. The very appreciative patrons, bedecked in all their finery, were also treated to some fire juggling, a magician and the divine Miss Pixie Crane who, in homage to Marlene Deitrich, performed in her native German.

Back in more familiar surroundings, the gentlemen played their first Manchester gig in a while, on 14th November at the Northern Quarters popular Joe's Bar. It was nice to see so many familiar faces and get reacquainted with old friends. Hats off to Sir Paddy for another wonderful night! The gentlemen hope to make their return before the year is out.The gentlemen have also found time in their busy schedules to return to the rehearsal, studio and have added a new song to their repertoire as well as a new arrangement of a Johnny Cash classic.

After 2 years at the MySpace helm, Sir Garington has relinquished his role to the very capable Sir Julien, so that he may concentrate on producing his cinematic offerings for your delectation. Sir Julien's valet, Charles is currently at home in France due to a family bereavement. Our thoughts are with him.

Sir Pericles continues to manage the pages of Facebook, under the non de Plume of Henri Gibson, whilst continuing to progress in the world of academia and move abode with Mademoiselle. Ginger.

In other news from Gentlemen HQ, Sir Garington and his beau are off to see Mr. Nicholas Cave, for a good dose of Duende on the 25th November!

A royal treat, shimmying through languages and passion, the grunge and the longing combine making a mix to warm the heart, the lust and the ardour evoke loving and emotive lyricism, which drifts out to the audience, and can only induce rapture. For a first single this is well beyond impressive and sparks excitement of even more to come. Stemming from Manchester, they prove even further what a diverse city of sounds this is. Track one being fuelled with lust and jibe, then flipping the coin onto 'L'effluve', a frenched, rhythmically blues tune, that just makes you wish you were bilingual and with the sense and Romantiscm of the Parisian.

here we are then, on the eve of another little gentlemanly adventure.  it all seems a bit strange at the moment, going back to edinburgh.

we went up to edinburgh two years ago, but it seems like the dim and distant past.  we went for two weeks, did a load of busking for beer tokens, consumed a lot of alcohol, collected stories about park rangers, flashing butlers and crazy crows.  We played our first ever gig together to thousands of people at the meadows, on the main stage on fringe sunday, and played the next day to one chap who didnt even pay to get in the venue.  he did do us a nice reveiw though.

there are some writings about our trip on our website. a jolly good read it is too, even though we didn't write it (our esteemed chronicler Henry Gibson is to blame)

since then, we have played at burlesque nights, festivals, tents, unsigned and signed nights, busy and dead nights, night time, teatime and bloody breakfast time radio, cafes and art galleries, and even a bank...we probably could recite them all as each and every one of them have given us another little tale to tell...(how about the one where the sound engineer mistook us for a dub reggae band and, oh we've tried to wipe that one from the memory...)

we even went over to Prague the other week and introduced them to our gentlemenly ways.   the guards in the royal gardens didn't seem to mind though!

this time our trip north is to be part of the wesport book festival at the request of the good, good people at armchair books.  we are saying good, good people, but they could be mass murderers or kidnappers....if you don't see us about, go and knock on their door (72-74 West Port, Edinburgh)
and while you're there, you'd best be in the mood to buy a book, and it had better be Valliards book you're in the mood to buy!

it is time to peregrinate northwards once more.

After discussing, planning and generally bickering about it for a while, we have a website - dum dum dum!

It is our little gentlemanly corner of the world wide web, on which we'll have some bits and bobs regarding us three, and some of the people and places we have encountered on our travels.

We are planning on having a links section which will take you to other gentlemanly corners of the web, which hopefully will illuminate you in the ways of the gentleman.

There is no music player on it yet, but we are currently working our little socks off to bring one to you, in the meantime there are links on the homepage taking you to places where we have some tunes up on the ol' t'interweb.

Any suggestions to the website will be gratefully received, thought about, and maybe even put into practice if our web monkey can suss it out...

Oh yeah, nearly forgot, we can be found at srgents.com

Hope to see you on the other side

just a little ole blog explaining about the tunes we put up on the myspace player.

All the mixes and recordings are done by us gentlemen.  They are not in their 100% finished state, with some minor tweaks still needed before we pass them on for mastering.  The tracks that are available for purchase, either by download or in physical form, have been tweaked and mastered for your aural pleasure.
