El Paso County GOP goes surfin' USA

Republicans swarmed to the El Paso County GOP’s beach party and caught the political wave in singing and surfboard-riding contests backed by Beach Boys’ tunes played by the Kahuna Beach Party Band.

More than 200 Gidgets and Moondoggies attended the May 30 beach party at the El Paso County Fairgrounds in Calhan. Statewide GOP candidates cruised for votes, gave speeches and tested their popularity in a straw poll.
Courting votes were U.S. Senate candidates Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck, Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier, and businessmen Cleve Tidwell, of Denver, and Mark Van Wyk, of Castle Rock. Also on the prowl for supporters were GOP gov candidates Sen. Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction, and Evergreen businessman Dan Maes, Scott Gessler, candidate for secretary of state, and Walker Stapleton, candidate for treasurer.
The U.S. Senate straw poll results were: Frazier, 43 percent; Buck, 39 percent; Tidwell, 13 percent; Van Wyk, four percent, and KHOW talk radio host and attorney Dan Caplis, one percent. That adds up to 100 percent, leaving no percents for former 7th District Congressman Bob Beauprez, a possible contender whose name also was on the ballot.

More surprising were poll results in the governor’s race: former Congressman Scott McInnis received 64 percent of the votes, despite being absent from the beach party. Penry captured 35 percent and Maes, one percent. Candidate Brian Watson, like Beauprez, was listed on the ballot but didn’t show up in the results.
If there had been a contest for best-dressed surfer dude, the award would have gone to Rep. Kent Lambert, R-Colorado Springs. Instead of his typically conservative hairstyle and suit, Lambert sported wind-blown hair and wore sandals, baggies and a T-shirt.
The crowd laughed hysterically when Lambert donned a knit cap and dreadlocks, kicked off his sandals and gyrated on a surfboard.
Rivaling Lambert’s catch-the-wave showstopper was Buddy Gilmore, director of the party’s fundraisers, who belted out “Surfin’ USA.”
Republican Reps. Mark Waller, of the Springs, and Amy Stephens, of Monument, took first and second prizes, respectively, in the chili cook-off.

What’s the secret of Waller’s winning concoction?
“My wife!” exclaimed Waller, who asked the crowd to thank Jennifer Waller.
Peggy Littleton, a member of the State Board of Education and candidate for the El Paso County Board of Commissioners, asserted that the secret ingredients were beer in Waller’s chili and bourbon in Stephens’ dish.
In addition to chili, the cookout menu included soda pop, chips, barbecued pork, hot dogs and hamburgers. The grill was supervised by Lynn Looper, husband of Rep. Marsha Looper.
Before introducing the candidates vying for the party nomination to challenge Democrat Gov. Bill Ritter in 2010, a group of Republican lawmakers conveyed a message to the incumbent.
“Tax-Us Ritter” was printed above a caricature of the governor on a banner held by Republican Reps. Lambert, Looper, Stephens and Waller, and Sen. Bill Cadman, of Colorado Springs.

The Party moved on to Parker Country Festival and we rocked 'em in the red dust!  Showtime was 4:30 right after the incredible Wendy Woo.  We brought along a couple of extra friends so we could see how many Kahunas could fit on one stage.  Percussion Kahuna Christian Teele added latin percussion and the amazing Mark Harris worked out on reeds.

We don't get to play in the Denver area very often, so this was a real treat.  The wives and kids got to see what all the buzz is about and a lot of our friends came out as well.  And for the first time, the weather was great!  This time it really was 90 degrees at Kahuna Beach!

OK, we were the opening act for Ronnie Milsap at the Rod and Guns Club of Vernal, UT.  I've never heard so much gunfire at a gig in my life.  Thankfully, it was all outside!  Apparently, this show was part of their annual tournament where the winner's prize was $100,000.  We drove for 7 hours, waited around for 5 hours and played for 30 minutes.  We never met Ronnie, but his band members are very nice people and we had a great time with them.

Who says Utah is dull?  Oh yeah, we saw lots of guns but they all kept their rods to themselves.  Go figure.

Just as I suspected, going to South Dakota in a blizzard to do 20 minutes of surf music wouldn't be enough. Now we are going to leave in a blizzard and go to Lake Tahoe to play for ice skaters at a big resort for two days and then go play for 20 minutes in Reno.
The good news is that the surf board won't be bungied to the top of a rented suv, it will be comfortably tucked inside of a cargo van.
Does this sound nuts?????? How much fun can one band have?????? As long as we protect the mojo in surfboard, we will have many more 20 minute sets. It would be great to try doing one without the blizzard.
I won't complain. This is how a band works. I have yet to find "perfection" in my life and I am not going to expect it now.

It's always 90 degrees here at Kuhuna Beach on the coast of Colorado. Before the music starts I think that we will cook up some barbeque. Let's get Rachel Ray to do it, I thought that I saw her around here somewhere.
Don't forget the sunscreen.

It's taken a little time to put together my thoughts about the showcase we just did in South Dakota.  My impression: Holy Crap!  We thought they would like us, but we weren't expecting them to like us that much.  Yes, we were a hit and the gigs are rolling in.  The summer is filling in nicely and we've been accepted to showcase at the Western Fair Association in Reno in January.  If that one goes well, that opens CA, NV, AZ and I think OR.  Not bad.  Our agent is excited, we're excited and our families are probably a bit wary of what is about to unfold.  The story just gets better and better.

The question Bill put forward when we started this was, "so how do we take this to the next level?"  Meaning no weddings, no bar mizvahs, no tuxedo, no bars.  We've been doing that crap for years and now it's time to do something different.  Sometimes it's as simple as changing your mind.  If you're used to doing things a certain way all you have to do is change your point of view.

In my opinion, that little question defined and created KBP.  Out of that, the process of breathing life into this was unlike anything else I've ever been involved with.  Our agent was a great consultant from the get go.  After all they have to sell it so give them what they need.  We even put together a list of potential names for the band and did a couple focus groups.  The idea was to bring together everyone who would be involved and come up with something we all had a hand in creating.  We brought in Mark Derryberry at Derryberry Audio and he graciously allowed us to use his studio as our home base and eventually became a full partner as engineer and tech specialist.  Mark also happens to have the "Ears of Truth."  Nothing gets past him.  We had a couple of false starts with additional personnel (singers--yikes!).  Anthony Walker just happened to call to see if there was anything going on.  The answer was "yeah, I think so.  Why don't you come over and check it out?"  2nd guitar and 1st tenor slot filled.  It was like we created this beast and it reached out and got what it needed.

Playing in SD was a blast. It is a treat to work with these fine musicians. I have been in bands for a long time and I have come to the conclusion that being a good musician is only half of the deal. The other half is the person. Now we can sing and laugh together and we have learned keep a surfboard from blowing off of the rental car, I am sure that we can hang for awhile. It seems like some of our families and friends think that we have run off and joined the circus. I can understand that and maybe we have. I only know that I am having a good time. Keep on rockin'.

Fred Kahuna here,
Yes, friends and neighbors, they will be driving across Wyoming with a surfboard on top of vehicle. If we arrive with an ice encrusted surfboard, at least we will have 24 hours to thaw it out.
This band is on a mission. I am prepared for anything. So far we have had a good response everywhere we have played and I have a real good feeling about this one. It has been a long time since I have been in a band that felt anything like a team and I have never been surrounded by more talent. I am learning a lot.

For those of you who are voyeurs, interested, curious...whatever,  we hope that the story that is about to unfold here in this journal will be enlightening, possibly inpirational, and will bring you a sense of what it is like to do the kind of work that we do.  On Thursday 11/09/06, we will be driving up to Rapid City SD to trot out our stuff at the Rocky Mountain Fair Association's annual showcase.  This is a yearly event for buyers representing state and county fairs and other large events in a 9 state region.  RMFA is only one of several associations around the country and I suppose we'll be visiting most of them.

Here's the deal:  we will do a 20 minute set, no more, no less.  People with clipboards will take notes.  The agent will sell.  We will shmooze.  Money will be negotiated and the calender will be filled for the spring and summer.  Sounds simple enough, right?  We'll see.

This simple little gig is the culmination of an amazing amount of work by an amazing group of people.  That said, I guess I owe you a taste of the story that has become the Kahuna Beach Party.  If you ask me, KBP is the end result and current incarnation of a group of old friends who have been making noise together for close to 20 years.  Over the years, individuals have drifted in and out, some of us have spun-off bands here and there, some have declared retirement.  Somehow we always seem to drift back together and get something going.  At the center, there has always been Bill.

Last March, Bill calls and asks me if I'd be interested in doing some Beach Boys music.

"Who's involved?'

"Fred, David and Mark Devine if I can get him."

"Cool, I'm in."
