Hi all,

Tangria just started working with the folks at hip chick music.  We hope to have some more gigs on the calendar thanks to the people at this nifty label. The artists on the label make a wide variety of music. Please let me know if you find a new band you love there.

Hi all,

Some good news came yesterday.

"City of Ba," the percussion piece I wrote and included on Tangria's first CD, was a finalist in the Great American Song Contest (see the instrumental category near the bottom of the page)!  Yay!

I really like this tune and I am happy to have a reason to mention it since I mostly feature jazz with Tangria nowadays.  I hope that more people will find "City of Ba" through iTunes and other outlets and buy it thanks to this contest.

By the way, one teacher used "City of Ba" to introduce students to the names of different drums.  Also, if you like "City of Ba," check out "Gemini," the percussion tune on Tangria's second CD.

Peace,
Sheryl

Hi all,

I just researched a few of the nonprofits serving Mali. I donated a bit of my portion of the profits from Tangria's self-titled CD to the Mali Health Organizing Project. I also created a small microloan through Microplace.

I wanted to give back to the place that helped to inspire "Bamako Love Walk," a track on the CD. I studied jembe drumming in Mali, Senegal and the Gambia in the summer of 1997.

Thanks again to the drummers and others who helped me out during my travels and studies.

If anyone else knows of any effective organizations helping those in need to get healthier and more empowered in Mali, please let me know.

Peace.

Hi all,

Thanks to the familiar and new supporters who came to a lively and fun show in Rocky Mount. I had a blast celebrating Black History Month with an appreciative and engaging crowd. I look forward to returning to the area if future opportunities arise.

The complete Tangria trio will be performing in Berkeley next month. Simon, Vicky and I will play for 3 hours at Jupiter, a spot with tasty pizza.

I have settled into my new environmental work, but it has been keeping me very busy. I will finish up some cool Tangria business projects soon, so check back here for new posts of the latest news in the coming weeks.

Thanks for reading.

:)

Hi all,

I've been dealing with jury duty lately and eagerly anticipating the start of my new position after the trial wraps up. Whew!

In the meantime, I'm grateful to have some help from Tim, the man behind nutritioushealing.com/.  Not only is Tim helping me improve my health and that of my friends, but he is also helping me reach more fans online. Thanks, Tim, and welcome to Tangria's fans, new and familiar.

I'm also making more headway in reaching film and TV folks who may want to license Tangria's music. Hurray!

On a musical note, lately I'm enjoying the pop artist Estelle's newest hit "American Boy" when it comes on the radio.

Off to sleep,
Sheryl

Happy 2009 everyone!

I enjoyed a restful start to the new year yesterday. I took some time to look back on the past year and set goals for 2009.

The NYE show at Barolo was a blast. The audience was appreciative, and the chocolate cake was delectable. This was a promising segue into 2009 since the folks behind Barolo, Jason and Stephen, may bring Tangria to their restaurant in Burlingame in 2009. Yay for more yummy food to fuel the yummy music!

Since 2008 was a year for touring (see the Jan. to March tour at www.tangria.net/shows.html) and since I'll be starting a new postdoctoral position in a few days, I'm looking at 2009 as a year to cultivate projects closer to home.  The next time you check out www.tangria.net/shows.html, you may notice shows for some of the other bands (www.tangria.net/productions.html) that I'm leading now. These are groups that take some of the same personnel associated with Tangria and let us create vocal pieces and play tunes outside of jazz. I'll even be singing a bit in the Feb. 19, 2009 show in Rocky Mount, NC.

In 2009, I also plan to build on Tangria's 2008 successes with TV music placement (see the bottom of www.tangria.net/cd.html for details). I just mailed off more music to be included in another music library and am eager to directly contact film and TV music supervisors. I think that sharing our music with more folks this way is a fun and hopefully lucrative way to reach out widely while taking a break from touring.

Best of luck with your new year!

Hi,

I'm getting ready to thaw out after a walk outside. I hope you were able to be in touch with the folks you love today. I was and I'm thankful for that.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great holiday!

Hi all,

I'm so excited and feeling great after the show that Vicky and I played today. We were rained on halfway through, but that didn't stop us from having a good time. This was my first gig in Berkeley in which I sang the main vocal part on a few tunes, and I think the crowd liked what we were doing! Yay!

It was also great to see friends there (thanks for coming Tim and Nick) and to meet  Vicky's fans, too!

We'll keep folks posted on future gigs of the Sheryl and Vicky experience through tangria music productions.

Take care and stay dry!
