For all of you that have been enjoying and
going with me on these adventures in he Mecca Bobby Whitlock and CoCo Carmel
should ring a bell as I’ve done a few reviews so to speak on their show at the
Saxon but this weekend with Michael Somma in town, it’s was going to be just a
little different.
I just love a Sunday morning with java and
tunes in hand looking out over the dry lake Travis, the damn birds here are so
cool, Mexican Buzzards to Blue Herons with lots of Cardinals which I really
Love!
I put Michaels new work in the juke box and
turned it up, what a piece of work…Soul Relaxation which I’ll review soon along
with some other, going to start doing that in the Review section here on
myspace…Yep, I feel that is needed for all the Indie Artists I’ve come in
contact with and more down the road but back to Michaels Product…Michael Somma
is a Bluesman who can eat up the neck and really knows how to use the slide but
the biggest thang is his Tone…Tone is everything Buckaroos and this CD is so
soothing but stirs a Sexual Healing note in ones Soul!
Well, wanna shoot another round he ask as he
stumbles out in the Great Room…You talking to me! Off to Live Oak at Lakeway and what a great Course. With
just a little Rain and full cloud cover, the match was on…he gave me 16 stokes,
I was going to get in his pocket today…Off we went and did we have some fun, oh
yes we did but I came up 1 short so I bought lunch at Poodies…one of the places
you can get a good burger with a Cold one on Sundays…Heaven was at hand. When leaving, rubbin’ Poodies belly for
good luck is something one should do just for the hell of it, never know!
Michael was so excited on seeing Bobby as he
saw Derek and the Dominos at the Fillmore back in 70 and being an Eric Freak,
Michael plays all the licks Eric does on most songs he writes! That’s what happens when you have a
Hero who you think is God.
As we took off to the Saxon Pub for a Great
Night with Bobby Whitlock and CoCo Carmel Michael asked, can we get close…as
close as you feel like without getting in their lap…remember yesterday with Tim
Curry…Oh yea, let’s roll.
Front and center Michael is aglow with Love
for what the Groove that Bobby Whitlock was part of, hell he was at least half
of the Layla LP to tell the Truth, no pun here…but it was his Groove that made
it happen!
Once again, I see Matt Gregory is with them,
this young slinger must have got the job in Bobby’s new Rock adventure soon to
come for all of us to enjoy but tonight, it the Bobby Whitlock and CoCo Carmel
show Live at the Saxon Pub, 1320 S.Lamar, 512.448.2552 and what acoustics in
the place, really fine!
CoCo has a Strat tonight, they are all electric
and do they ever hit us with some sound…its only Rock and Roll but I Love
it! Michael is in Heaven as I look
over at him and he’s just stunned by the Laughter and Love that is shown on
stage.
I’m thinking the whole time as this show,
not a Rock band but this show should be taking to every 1000 to 2500 seat venue
and let Bobby just tell his stories and play the tunes that really had a huge
impact on many lives around the world…and now Bobby Whitlock is going to Tell
The Truth in a Book out sometime in 2010…oh the wheels are turning
here…Concert Tour with Book signings, not just the USA but canvas this Rock we
Ride! Once again, the licks and vocals of the Dominos will ride again as they
are cooking tonight at the Saxon! Bobby’s Vocals are as strong today as they
have ever been and then there’s COCO Carmel, Bobby’s Wife and Friend who just
eats up the Strings and when she opens her mouth to sing, it’s Bluestime
Buckaroos, this woman knows the craft of blues phrasing, what Soul! Matt Gregory has learned the catalog
well and has that red SG smoking!
Once again, the fans show their approval with the buying of the new CD
and filling the Tip jar…This is some good stuff you can’t find a Walgreen’s…This
make the Soul so happy, what an exchange of energy…Let me just say, when they
come to your town…no matter what the price of the ticket, GET IT!
Oh, this has been a very cool 4 days of Golf
and Music, and with a cat who cooks himself and to watch him react to the
Groove, makes me know, I just might miss it myself…but I know how to come back
and I know how to bring it to the Mountains! Ooooooh yeah, I do know how to do
that!

Saturday morning at Sunrise was a morning
with no sunrise... so when it pours in Tejas Buckaroos, it really gets with the
program, my Golf adventure with Michael Somma who is about a 5 at the most
handicap is on hold as it’s coming down in buckets! Saturday down in Texas even though it’s the Live Music
Capital of the world, dat why I call it da Mecca, is a Football thang…not for
all but for the most part, it’s the Blood of the State and here in Austin, the
Horns rule so I change our groove to heading in to the Texas Music Museum to
see what all they had. Should have called as the doors where closed, locked up
on a Saturday afternoon while I’m feeling like a Duck, it’s pouring out
here…let us in! Nope, not today,
for whatever reason, closed on Saturday…sheeeeeeeet!
OK, I tell Michael it’s after High
Noon and enough of this being a Duck, Time for a Cold one at the Saxon Pub, 1320 S Lamar
512.448.2552 which at 3pm they start with Live Music. As we glide through downtown, burnt orange is everywhere and
6th street is alive with all the venues at party stage as the
Longhorn game is coming on the tube and it’s pouring rain like a Monsoon. The
Saxon is no different but with a different crowd, a little more mature so to
speak but still the Horns where on the tube…We’re not there 30min and the power
goes off.R U kiddin me…some days your just the bug on the windshield, this was
not looking good but I’m trying this new Zen thang and all will be cool
As we let the cold ones slide down and enjoy
the game I see a Band settin up I hadn’t’ seen here before so I tell Michael,
lets go get a better seat, one close to the Mojo.
I’m one to just chill and watch Artists Set
up, I can get a fill for what’s to come in most cases and I notice that theirs
a cat with a baritone guitar, hadn’t seen this in sometime…turns out to be Will
Dunlop who makes it sound like it should…Bass and Guitar then on the Cajon and
Congas is Jorge de Armas who keeps a steady full sound which makes one think of
the Islands and then on the lead Vocals, piano, flute and harp is Time Curry,
The Tim Curry Trio is center stage!
This group of musicians brought something
different to The Saxon pub, more of a Rhythm and Blues Groovc, Tim has such a
powerful voice with a deep Soulful edge and lays down some fine phrasing with
the keys, flute and a Stevie Wonder style of Harp…These cats picked up the
Saturday afternoon groove as we were making plans for later that evening which
was going to be a problem as so many Acts to catch but only a giving amount of
time…I really want to catch The Time Curry Trio, www.myspace.com/timcurrytrio
Again as it had a real cool vibe and I like
that!
The Rain has turned into a steady drizzle as
head next door to the Saxon and find Austin Music which has some Very cool
Guitars and Amps for the Beginner or the Pro…I think I’m going to get me one of
these 335’s soon, just like the tone and if it was good enough for Freddie, it
be good enough for JaBeaux, I just need to learn how it works!!
While there I over heard this gal talking
about Alan Haynes playing over at The Evangeline Café tonight…R U kiddin me I
ask and of course she smiled and started to say, why would I do that when you
could be my favorite Turd and I put my finger to her lips and said, oh
Darlin’…Not me!
I told Michael we would be having Cajun
again tonight as we couldn’t miss this event…Michael not knowing of Alan asked,
R U sure? The look in my eyes was
enough and in the car and heading to The Best little Cajun eatery in town, The
Evangeline Café at 8106 Brodie Lane, 512.282.2586 has the goods just like my
Grandmother use to cook, well, close and that works for me as they always have
great Music and tonight, one of the Best in the World when it comes to the
Blues…Alan Haynes from Houston who now lives in Austin is only a few feet from
anyone at the gig. This is going to be fantastic! When we get there, it’s packed once again and set outside
having a Cold one watching the Rain, reminds me of a Street car named Desire!
And then, you just never know who’s going to walk up do
you…Matt Smith of the Monstas…Damn good to see you and tell him of me moving
back to Colorado. He tells of his moving back and putting in å Studio and all
the work he’s got just within the last 5 days…and then tells us about his tour
of Germany soon. Matt is such a Genius when it comes to anything with Strings.
He’s already doing workshops for anyone who has that itch to learn. He then
whips out these cool slides he’s making, out comes the players, everyone wants
to try them, Michael is first, then the drummer for Alan, then Alan and so
on…Molly comes out and says our table is ready and in I go and watch these cats
play slide on Matts 1935 Dobro.
After eating some Great Food, the show
starts with Alan just smoothly sliding into the blue, the Drummer and Bass are
just shadows of eachother and Alan plays and communicates with the audience
with a Soul to Soul Groove. He played a few hits from Wishing Well and just a
few Jimi tunes which most Artists want even touch but, what command of his
Groove…it was like he was giving his soul to all of us to feel, to enjoy the
juice within…Alan Haynes www.myspace.com/alanhaynes
Is one of the Top Blues Artist today that
gives that Real Texas Groove, Ooooooh what a evening of Blues and Michael being
a Bad Ass player his self, this was a Trip into the Mecca that was rewarding
two fold!
The mist with the lights of the City made
the drive west on 71 such a cool trip as I felt blessed for once since I’ve
been here, this is the Mecca of Live Music and good people with Great Food…I
will miss it but the Boogie Calls.

Current mood:Smokin'

Getting up on Friday morning and heading to
the course over at Lakeway was a huge rush, playing a private course which
Michael got us on was so cool even though it was raining, what the hell is a
little rain…T-time was for 9:45am and we be rockin! What a fine course, and all the fine homes over here,
there’s no financial problems here Buckaroos’, this is that Old Money and what
class they through out there! I’m having the time of my life and hittin some Great
Shots and unbelievable puts, Michael accuses me of taking lessons but it’s been
about 5yrs since we’ve played and I have got it Tuned in!!
OK, like where do we
go now he ask, I tell him I feel like some Gumbo and tonight, being Friday
Night, lets do The Evangeline Café over at 8106 Brodie Lane, 512.282.2586 where
I hear that Greasy Wheels is playing. He asked about them and told him about
the days of the Armadillo, then it hit him…oh yeah, they were like San Francisco
Bands of the late 60’s…I said yeah!! And they still are, you’ll love it! Just
we loaded up the clubs and headed out, the bottom falls out again, now, when is
this going to end…Not a week ago I and about the whole state was beggin for
some rain as this has been one of the worst summers on record…got my attention,
just one of the reasons I’m headed back to the Mountains…It’s Hot and dry down
here inTejas!!
Trying to see with the heavy rain was a real
trip and I felt like I was at the laundry mat in one of those huge commercial
washers..Damn, just don’t run into me Mr. 18 wheeler, just heading for some
Gumbo and cool sounds. Wheeee what a ride.
The Evangeline Café is jumping, packed but
after waiting about 30min, Sweet Brittney finds us a two topper on the back
wall where I like cause the sound is best there…We eat like where going to the
electric chair, Gumbo and poboy sandwich’s, oh hell, it’s Friday night and I
can work it off next week.
Then here comes Greasy Wheels, they set up and take
us back to the Groove of the Real Music, Roots which makes your toes extend and
your butt starts to move, good Grooves to finish the night, these cats have
been a stable for Austin since the 70’s and still bring joy to everyone with
their Roots Based sound…Being a full as a tick, we head to the lake in the rain
once again and yes, Christmas lights a flashing all along Hwy 71…what a
Cash Cow, the road is real slick and hilly so Drive safe if you ever pass this
way Buckaroo.
When passing Poodies I smile and give him a prayer, what a Honky
Tonk, Michael asked what I did and so I told him about the coolness of one
Poodie Locke and said we’d stop in soon for a burger and beer…what a day, time
to chill.
