This is something I initially recorded on 5/8/09, right before leaving on a short weekend vacation. When I returned, I added the keyboard part to it and then my friend in Texas added the drums to it. I like how it turned out, I like the feel of it and the tone of the guitar. This is another example of what I call "intervallic composition", where a lot of what I'm playing is strictly certain intervals between two strings.

On this one, I'm using a vintage Colorsound wah circuit that I built myself in an authentic Colorsound wah shell that I acquired as a partial trade for some work I did on someone's wah pedals. Anyhow, I have it active throughout the whole tune, but it's left at a certain setting most of the time. I have grown to really like this Colorsound wah pedal, I like it as much as my vintage Maestro Boomerangs now. The guitar is my "SpankenStrat" with DiMarzio FRED on the bridge and Fender "Hot Noiseless" pickups in the middle and neck positions. I was using the neck pickup for this recording.

Anyhow, I named it "The Journey" because I was reflecting on my life and all of the different journeys I have been on thus far. I have now embarked on a new journey with an uncertain destination, and a new chapter in my life is now being written. I am determined to keep pressing forward in spite of all the nasty curve balls life has recently thrown my way. Life a lot of times is not so much about the destination as it is the journey in getting there.

I just wish I knew why all of my desires and aspirations in life always hit a brick wall and go nowhere. I refuse to believe that my destiny is to be in a maze of brick walls blocking everywhere that I want to go. But I also can not see breaking out of these walls, either.

God please help me.

This one was recording this morning (1/17/09) in the span of a couple of hours with no real planning beforehand. I just sat down at the drum set and just played a groove. It's a first take with no click track. Then I added the bass line and the guitar part followed that. I have been playing drums for barely a year now (and not even consistently!), and I am happy to see that I have made some progress in that area.

I named it "Zoe" because it's kind of a lively tune. The ancient Greek word "zoe" means "life", and the word "zoo" is derived from this word. I also feel like some new life has been infused in me as well, so that was also a factor in the naming of this tune. As with most of the titles to my tunes, it is named after some event or what I was pondering about at the time of recording.

I bought an F-Spaced bridge position DiMarzio FRED bridge pickup about 15 years ago and had it in one of my Ibanez guitars for a long time. I was really into Joe Satriani at the time, and found out that was his main pickup for years, which is part of the reason why I got it - I liked the way it sounded. Anyway, I decided to take it out of that guitar about a year ago and it I had it sitting around since then.

A couple of months ago, I decided to put it into my "SpankenStrat". I must say, it made that guitar sound great now. It's perfect for my style and has the exact sound that I have been trying to get out of that guitar. I have worked on that project guitar quite a bit now, and I think it's exactly what I want now, and it has a lot of good tones. I guess some things that are worthwhile can be a pain.

Anyway, I was messing around with a chord progression idea I've been toying with for a little while and thought I'd also try doing that octave thing I hear so much these days (but I don't think that I really like it much for my own tunes, however). It kind of grew from there and then I added the drums and bass parts. The rhythm guitar heard mostly on the left channel is the FRED pickup on the bridge of my SpankenStrat. The other guitar is my Mojo Nitefly using the neck pickup, which is a Seymour Duncan Jazz model. I finally found a way to use that trippy sounding F sharp maj 9 chord with an added fourth in a piece of music!

It's hard to believe that it's already been a year since I was in Guitar Player magazine, the time went by really quick. Looking back, I am thankful for that event, not because I got some small mention in a nationally published magazine, but because it helped to change my self-perception as a guitar player into something more closer to the truth than having the "I suck" attitude all the time. I am still not where I would like to be in some respects, but I am more determined than ever now to reach that goal. I will find a way!

Here's the original blog on the GP mention for those who may have no idea what I am talking about! http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=124818284&blogID=281695863&Mytoken=21168903-3EEA-411E-B13375854F491DD335918000

This one started out as something I just stumbled on one morning while practicing. I kept adding parts to it over the course of a week or so until I thought it had enough substance to become a piece of music. I am playing all of the instruments on this one, and it was all recorded in one evening.

It also the musical interpretation of a vision I had of a war in the spiritual realm, the classical battle between good and evil, if you will. More specifically, it is a vision of the ongoing war between those who are followers of God and those who are the enemies of God. But this war is intensifying because the end of the age is drawing nearer every day. I can see some of the things written in the Book Of Revelation happening before my own eyes. This Bible, which people think is a book of fairy tales is going to prove itself true in these last days, for those who are seeking truth.
