Current mood: excited
hey my friends out there... as you may see i've been quite busy the recent weeks and months. since i was doing my first real collaboration with panda team (berlin) there's been collabs with pappa thorpe from wisconsin (fugue on terrorism in d-minor, label thy anger, mirrormasked remixed), jennifer thomas from seattle (hartmannswillerkopf), pink noise from toronto (strike & recoil remix), orkan grammophon from switzerland (label thy resistance) and last but not least love sex n death from hawaii (two autumn variations on jedi pimp). there's a video i did on the moonlight sonata on youtube with 59000 visits this year...(just enter "mondscheinsonate" and it's the first one...)...i'm overwhelmed... i just got another cd from the panda team by mail and i'll soon start working on a remix of kidnapped. there's a collaboration with jennifer tracy kessler in the waiting line (yeah...how to remix blues vocals...?) and very exciting to me, when we'll both be ready, remixes and collaborations with my friend jen mas from new york... it seems like 2 other exciting projects in switzerland are just about to be started...they have very much to do with my new song --om-- ...more later :) yeah, i'm very excited all the time...it's not about success or fame. it's about the possibility to work with such wonderful and diverging artists from all around the world and find fulfillement in adapting their inspirational sparks into my dark world. that's artistic therapy...you know i listen to the songs hundreds of times, feeling them becoming more and more a timeless part of my soul. it's like tatooing my heart in a way. that's why the feelings i had when creating a song intensely jump into my face when listening to it again, no matter how many years have gone since the creation. i'm addicted to my music, yeah, i have to admit my friend. my songs have become such a strong part of my life they're more and more like a part of my mind & body... i've been talking to a friend lately about that and i realized more than ever than my fulfillment in music is not in any sense related to any styles, trends or rules of behaviour in the musical world. compare the hartmannswillerkopf with label thy anger with big blocks and the desert with cloudness with om with two autumn variations on jedi pimp with the futur of my kids. there's no relation for many listeners i guess but still it's all the same for me - my world i feel comfortable in, safe and calm. inside the noise i find my personal silence. my childhood, my alcohol addicted father, my evercaring mother who was fond of krishnamurti and yoga, my great family and all the great and gruesome horror and science fiction movies i've been watching much too early in my life... (you can listen to all the songs here... :) i need to go on. i know now, 38 years old, it will never stop. never. i couldn't stop it. i keep on running like mike muir does. i've reached so much with you wonderful collaborators, good souls i've been discussing with around the globe (e.g. chris from iron giant who kindly calls me "a deep motherfucker..." ), jake a. wheat from streetblastradio (who gave me such wonderful feedback and reviews), inspiring bands and artists! i love you peace roy aka king coat aka zenmetalshirt aw, yeah...forgot: please join me on facebook if you have an account. my name is king coat there... i'm looking forward very much to meeting you there!!!! :) :) :)

i usually don't ask other people for support. i do not appreciate messages like "do that for me, please, help me, i need i need i need..." at all because i think it should all come naturally, grown out of the need of your friends to support you because they like what you do. a slowly growing tree stands better in the storm. its roots will go deeper. (hmmm...guess that kind of thoughts made chris from IRON GIANT calle me a deep motherfucker :) this is about my philosophy; be it in my job as a teacher, in my family as a father, be it my astistic soul... today that is theory; i jumped on a train last week (much too late...) that's running very fast and can get me a live gig next week in zurich.. the point is i need some more fans on the website restorm.com to convince the booking team there to be the one to choose. so if you got a spare moment, if you like my work, please visit restorm.com (its in german language), click on "neu registrieren", enter you name an password, check your mail, comfirm the link, go to http://zenmetalshirt.restorm.com/albums and please, please, please click on little grey heart "fan werden"... if you do that for me and i'll get the gig be sure i will send you a personal letter with a drawing, a cd, and if we can use a camera there even a dvd and some kisses in your mailbox, be it in new york, brasilia, london or beijing! so much for the moment...i'm jumpy and i don't like that feeling... btw. restorm.com is a great site if you want to listen into whats new and upcoming in switzerland. i can recommend that and i hope they will soon be up there in english too... peace from zurich overland roy aka king coat aka zenmetalshirt

my two children, a 9 year old girl and a 4 year old boy have been the exceptional inspiration for this song, i carried along for a long time now, waiting to be produced... originally meant as an acoustic song, now converted into a technoesque meddley of styles and synths. it starts in my dark & fearful thoughts. than the peacedemons rise to wipe away all the war & pain, slavery & hate in order to let the beautiful souls of my kids live a fearless live in freedom.
i hope you too can feel the hope - raising your children, giving them the strength to carry on and to change the world they live in. but will they? i love you, my son and my daughter and i dedicate this song to you.
the future of my kids
the time that will come is it dark
the time that will come is it good
the time that will come will they be strong
the time that will come will they carry on
will they be important for the world
will the things they say be heard
will they try to change mankind
or will they be like us so blind
no child on earth has the evil within. evil lies in how we act in confrontation with the many tasks life brings. we learn evil. so all of us can teach not to be evil. no child will ever hurt anyone out of nothing. hurting is in every case a reaction to a feeling of weakness. all of us can teach children to be strong. so there will be no hurting. there will be no evil. do not pray act! do not believe. know! do not follow anyone. feel! do not watch TV. LIVE!

the narration...
when i was reading "The Golden Casket: Chinese Novellas of Two Millenia" for the second time this summer i was the same time very much into a new song - based upon a novel my friend andi reinhart from zurich recorded with me one or two years ago. the novel we recorded i call "fulan - a chinese novel"; it's a story i began writing years ago about the end of the world. a guy who wakes up every night, lurking downstairs to the living room, directly into hallucinating nightmares... here's the passage of the novel featuring in the song:
the chinese novels i read, the stuff i'm writing, the voice of my old friend...all goes together well. the inspiration...what i finally produced came out fairly different to what i intended before i started. there's one of my first friends out there on myspace, a beautiful open mind raving the USA with her hardcore, breakbeat and speedcore mixes - DJ Jen Mas. her mixes (most of all the faboulus femcore3 track) showed me a world new and well known the same time. well...it knocked me out and i had to drive my jeep at the edge of the road in order not to endanger my life. to make a long story short: i wanted to produce a track she can play on her parties. means: hardcore style, distorted 909 kicks, about 160 bpm. what came out was about 250 bpm (well it begins with about 60 bpm), so distorted i can't even hear Jennifer Thomas' violins (thanks, jennifer, for allowing me again to use your music!)... so i got back in the studio, made it slower and it came out...bullshit. so what you hear is what it is - the original. the insane "chinese novel" with the voice of andi, jenniger thomas' violins and drumbeats mixed liverecordings and drum machine accelerated at 250 bpm. no one can dance at 250 i guess:) the dedication...so i dedicate the song to my inspiring friend, exceptionable charakter and patient information-source for my stupid questions - Jen Mas! (and a remarkable fact - one of the stories in "The Golden Casket" has a charakter whose name is "Jen - The Foxlady"...the circle closing again...:)

some weeks ago i visited the Hartmannswillerkopf in Elsass-Lothringen with my students - an warseat in World War 1 where thousands of soldiers fought face to face for some feet of territory. the place is very much in its original state; it's quite a risk to let the students explore the trenches and subterranian caverns... though the slaughtery, where 15 000 men or more men died,is almost hundred years away, i was deeply touched by that doomed place.
a while before the excursion i listened to "fly away", the award winning song by Jennifer Thomas (myspace.com/jenniferthomasmusic), and was deeply touched too. i wrote to her about what i was feeling and asked her for the violin melodies because i NEEDED to make an interpretation...she agreed and weeks later i realized the hartmannswillerkopf experience and those violin-melodies kind of like were closing a circle in my mind. so i began sampling sounds of war from old movies and put everything together...
i dedicate this song to the victims of this senseless slaughtery and hope humankind will learn.
thanks, Jennifer, for trusting me and giving me this opportunity!!!

streetblast posted another awesome review on streetblast.com... ..Regardless, this collaboration has melted into a song that creates an semi-angry, anquished, melodic, technological, industrial, almost surreal track...the collaboration with orkan grammophon to me was an extraordinary process. no song before turned out so completely different than i thought before working on it. it's no remix. it's rather a reinterpretation of some elements hidden in the song "where's the medication" (you'll find it on myspace.com/ogband...are you able to find the musical connections between the songs?) i guess i put a lot of anger and sadness influenced by the situation in tibet in it. i'm no expert in history, so i won't judge over anyone. but i am sure like a rock violence is the wrong way. that's why i put the dalai lama in the first place on my top friends for a while: to support his fight against violence. strangely the excluded loops of 'where's the medication' sounded a lot sader than the song as a whole who is straightforward rock (with a reminiscence of soundgarden). all fitted perfectly together and i am very proud of the result though it's kind of weird, even surreal (to use the words of streetblasts station manager....) please click here for the review and support streetblast! peace & respect to you all! roy

if you, like me, don't care about mainstream and you're the same time frustrated and glad you have no success and maybe you think there's a lot of stupid sites on myspace, you don't want to be categorized, you're interested in what's it all about and you're not sure about the reason why you do all that musical or drawing stuff - it just has to come out and you'll never think you're a better person just because you're an artist without success and you just go on and keep on going and you repeatedly think what will you be happy about just before you die you're at the right place. also if you like to talk about technical issues, if you're a mac geek or a laptop-junky and you're in the flow with your medium, be it a pencil, a brush, a drumstick or a computer...whatever...and if you're a fundamentalist but still can discuss about it all you're welcome. YOU'RE WELCOME!!!

i am extremely thankful to jake for the awesome review about my musical project on streetblast.com.
please check out the review on: streetblast.com some excerpts from the review: °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° There is a phenomena emerging from Zurich, Switzerland and it is called "Zen Metal Shirt."
His music utilizes what I hope to define correctly as "frequencies" enveloped in a choreographed scramble, which is an acquired listen at first, and becomes almost addictive thereafter. It's the rawest form of acid/industrial... Maybe I am outside of the loop on the scene, but I have NOT heard anything like this before, and that is refreshing.
So has "Zen Metal Shirt" created a new genre of music? Perhaps, you could debate that in some forums if you wish because while some tracks may give you a NIN feel, it cannot be compared to anything produced by the like of NIN, Skinny Puppy, or other bands in this class. In review, would I recommend this music? Sure. This is not sanitized by any means, and the mainstream market would turn up their nose with ignorance to the art form that is this choreographed "noise," simply because they would not be able to understand the vision and depth of the musical techniques involved. Sophistication is a great word to define the results of "Zen Metal Shirt's" tracks, only because this is an exhibition of musical genius, and not a sugar coated mechanism to simplify electronic music.
The frightening part is, I believe that the United States is getting an early peek at the progressive movement of industrial music, which is now without comparison a turning point in the now exciting and fresh standard which "Zen Metal Shirt" has created. It is, without question, above my musical intelligence and possibly more performance art and sophisticated understanding - which makes this review most difficult.
...In the song "Fugue On Terrorism," this is evident in the track (available for stream and free download below this profile) and again, sophisticated genius.
The exploration of sound, in it's rawest and yet advanced electronic form is exciting for me. "Zen Metal Shirt" is the supplier of that excitement, and while it may be an acquired listen at first, it could be the future of electronic music. Maybe we should all take a lesson from our global partners in the indie underground? °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° Thanks again to streetblast.com!!!!!!
