FRIDAY NOV 28

HAUTE PURSE SUIT

Apparently some change is in the wind for the venerable Wax Romeo and Teddy Celebration's Friday night residency at the Marquee, b ut they are being SO tight-lipped about it (and for W. All I can tell you for certain, dear reader, is that our Friday night boogie-meisters will be in the house, and will throw down as per youshe.

I've seen them a dozen times, and they never fail to give it, good-time-Charlie/Charlize..- style. Personally, I can't wait for another seriously rocking version of 'Grow Yr Own Fucking Moustache, Asshole'

http://www.myspace.com/wet..secrets

Their shows are also notorious for selling out, so make sure you show up early and catch some seriously killer new wavey/electro-ish rock and roll from another great Edmo band, Christian Hansen and the Autistics.

Category: Parties and Nightlife

Everyone:

Been a while since I've written, mostly b/c life happens, and procrastination is a devil. The Marquee rolls on, though, and I feel its my duty to keep you abreast of the sitch, so here goes...

Oh right. Before I go any further, head over to our fan page and sign up... we need to feel yr cyber-love...

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Calgary-AB/The-Marquee-Room/8231944859

An exciting time this week for us- we are rolling out our brand-new Wedenesday night programming- HUMP Wednesday debuts this week, and we're super stoked for it. It is the first ongoing gay club night in a non-gay venue in our fair city. There's been a Facebook group for a few weeks already, and if you wanna get in on all updates and goings-on, head over to the HUMP page and join up!

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=27721648909

Our beloved Elisa Cutting has left us for Vancouver (*sniff* - we'll miss you, baby!), and Pat McEachern has filled the vacant Bar Manager position. Although he's not nearly as foxy, he seems to know how to rock, so we're still in good hands...

We're getting a load of shows featuring Vancouver bands this month, and this week is no exception. The Buttless Chaps have a brand new record out, and they'll be playing it and old chestnuts from their back catalog on Thursday, follwed Saturday by Young and Sexy... good times!

Here's the pertinent deets for the week-

WEDNESDAY OCT 15
Hump Wednesday! Debuts- door at 9, $4 cover

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=27721648909

THURSDAY OCT 16

The Buttless Chaps w/ guest Ford Pier

http://www.myspace.com/thebuttlesschaps

Old friends of the Marquee, the BC's 6th album, Catography is brand-spankin new, and it's their 4th for Mint records. The band places absolutely no limits on their musical wanderings and the result is an imaginative and seamless journey from traditional country to new wave to punk, performed without irony or pretense.

http://www.myspace.com/fordpier

Ford Pier has played with such artists as DOA, the Rheostatics and Veda Hille. Obviously, musical genres and boundaries mean nothing to this man, and you'll hear a loud, thoughtful, intelligent set of mind-bending rock music from him and his amazing band.

Door at 9, $10 cover

FRIDAY OCT 17

What else? HAUTE PURSE SUIT! Only the best dance party in town! Teddy Celebration has finally returned, and will be joined as usual by Wax Romeo and Disoriental... oh, yes!

Door at 9, $7 cover

SATURDAY OCT 18

Young and Sexy w/ the Neins Circa and the Church of the Very Bright Lights

http://www.myspace.com/yands

Their first appearance at the Marquee. Young and Sexy  play "twenty-first century pop with ideas and sounds from progressive and psychedelic bands from the 1970s. Imagine a world where subtle psychedelia meets smart progressive pop..."

http://www.myspace.com/theneinscirca

In describing the music of The Neins Circa, people have tossed around terms like "cabaret-pop", "earnest school gym slow dance-worthy ballads", "monumentally silly", "baroque melodiousness", and "offbeat experimentation". One reviewer referred to The Neins Circa as "a jaunty band, with a jaunty singer and jaunty songs", while another described the group's music as that of a "marching band proceeding jovially through the city streets".
Sounds good to me...

The Church of the Very Bright Lights (wha? no myspace?)

These dudes are gonna throw down '90s indie-rock style. All I can say is, come early- you won't regret it...

Doors @ 9, $10 cover

There ya have it- the Marquee week at a glance... seeya out there.

Tuesday, September 02, 2008

My good people:

As I stare out into the early  afternoon and the sun is shining down on the denizens of our fair city, one thought is burning a groove into the racetrack of my mind. "F#$% me. Summer's over."

That ain't no summer sun out there- that's a fall sun, no question. Spirits remain high here at the Marquee, though, as the turn of the calendar page reveals some pretty great events coming our way for the month of September. For now, we'll focus on the week at hand- juicy tidbits to come in the coming weeks, I promise.

WEDNESDAY SEPT 3

Another edition of the Rock and Roll Basement Party, and we mean Rock and Roll, peeps.

Marquee staff serve up tasty chunks of vinyl for your listening pleasure, pool and fooseball a'plenty, and NO COVER! Hard to beat, I'd say.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

THURSDAY SEPT 4 - BLACK MOLD W/ NO MORE SHAPES

Who knows which BLACK MOLD we're gonna get? Will it be the ambient, spooky, lo-fi electronic soundscape-y version, or the unhinged, balls-out white noise lunacy... or a mixture of the two? All I know is Chad Van Gaalen and Eric Hamelin will deliver a set that is sure to blow yr mind.

Speaking of Eric Hamelin, NO MORE SHAPES is his collaborative project with Jay Crocker and JC Jones-
how do I describe it? Wicked. Awesome. Apart from that, yr gonna have to decide for yourself...

http://www.myspace.com/nomoreshapeserichamelin

Doors at 9, $7 cover

----------------------------------------------------

FRIDAY SEPT 5 - HAUTE PURSE SUIT

The dance party tradition continues at the Marquee, although I'm still waiting to hear my standing request for "Bust a Move". Ya never know- mebbe this week is the week...

Doors at 9, $7 cover

------------------------------------------------------

SATURDAY SEPT 6 - LINT with DESIDERATA and STYLEE and the GUISE

LINT has been travelling our fair land for the past month bringing their particular brand of insanity to our countrymen from sea to sea. Y'know what happens when a great band tours and plays night after night after night, right? They go from awesome to F%&*ING INCREDIBLE!! This Saturday marks their triumphant return to the Marquee.

http://www.myspace.com/lintlintlint

Joining them on this night will be their tourmates, Edmonton's DESIDERATA

 http://www.myspace.com/desiderata

and locals STYLEE and the GUISE, featuring both Scotts from Gunther fame.

http://www.myspace.com/styleeandtheguise

Doors at 9, $10 cover

-------------------------------

That, friends, is what I know. For now.

Out...
