Do We Really "Love" God???

What is the one thing that most people long for?  Most would probably say love… So… who sets the example for love?  What is love really?  Where or from whom do we receive this love?

The answers to all these questions are seen through God himself.  As the bible tells us that God is love, it reveals just how God has shown his unconditional love to us.  In 1 John 4:10 it states:

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

I am sure that most of us probably know the all familiar verse John 3:16:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Through Jesus Christ, we see love at its purest.  Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13).

All of these examples have shown the unconditional love of God for his children… Now as his children how do we show love in return???

As humans we tell people we love them, we show them acts of love or kindness, or we may even buy gifts to show our love.  We may indeed do some of these things for God as well… we are to sing and shout praises unto the Lord as well as to communicate our love through prayer but that by far is not where the expression of our love should end!  On the other hand we can't buy anything for God to prove our love; He is the owner of all things including ourselves.

Again not only do we show love to others with words alone but with our behavior (actions) as well…. The same is true regarding our love for God.

In John 14:15 it states

"If you love me, obey my commandments"

Now upon this statement we conclude that the opposite is true as well.  If we do not keep Gods commandments, we do not love God.  In another verse

1 John 5:3 we read:

"Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome."

In short God has basically told us that if we keep his commandments we tell him that we love him and if we do not then we tell him that we do not love him.

Since we as Christians express our love by keeping His commands in addition to our words… it brings forth another obligation.  To keep His commands we must first learn what they are… how can we say we will keep His commands if we don't put forth effort to study His word. If I tell God in prayer I love Him and desire to keep His commands but spend little time in study, do I really love Him? Do I love God with all my heart, mind, and soul, or am I putting on a facade constructed of ignorance through deliberate neglect?  I think many of us have played that role at one time or the other….

In 2 Timothy 3:16-17

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.  God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

Here we learn that the secret to keeping His commands and being able to accomplish doing His commands, we MUST turn to His word!

Paul writes in Romans about devotion as well as obedience to God.

Romans 12:1-2

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

Now God is telling us here that we will be good and acceptable in the eyes of Christ if we obey His commands as a living sacrifice!!!  Now can we see that there is not a better way to show God we love Him through obedience to His word.

After thinking and studying on this topic it really isn't hard to determine whether or not we really love God... It was best understood by me when reading this passage of a bible study…

We may only judge ourself - no one else. Do I love God? Have I told God I love Him? Do I show God I love Him everyday by keeping His commands? Am I living a life of sacrifice to do God's will above my own will? Does my love for God move me to diligently study His word and learn more about Him and His commands? If you answered "no" to any one of these questions, why not change today and tell God: "I love you!"

During the last few months... trials and tribulations have positioned me to lean all dependence and understanding on God.  God has been flowing certain things in my spirit so I began to write... I hope you enjoy some of the things God has revealed to me....

Set Apart For God

Even though we have been "set apart" as God's children, we continue to behave in ways that are contrary.   As Christians, we realize shortly after we have been saved that there is a new battle in us that is raging... a battle between our old sin-lead nature and new Spirit-lead nature.

Paul talks about this inner struggle in Galatians 5:17:

For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

Our heart's desire is to please and obey God, but our flesh is weak making sin difficult to resist. Yet, it is in our never ending struggle with sin and obedience to God that sanctification does its work.

We should strive to be like Christ and in that we should desire to set forth a great example of what Jesus Christ is and what he has done for us.....

Sometimes, we must make sacrifices and set ourselves aside from the standard....everyone has different convictions and has to listen to what the holy spirit is speaking to them.... alot of times if you have the slightest feeling that something is not right... it usually isn't...  we all have things that we may make excuses for to ease our conscious.  We as humans don't really like change.....

In 2 Corinthians 2:14-15 is states:

But thanks be to God, Who in Christ always leads us in triumph and through us spreads and makes evident the fragrance of the Knowledge of God everywhere.

For we are the sweet fragrance of Christ [which exhales] unto God, [discernible alike] among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

Also in Romans 1:1

It tells us the about the apostle paul being called and set apart for God....

He goes on in verse 5 & 6 to tell us:

Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.

And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

He convicts us on areas that need to be changed, helping us to grow in holiness. We begin to view the world, people, and personal difficulties from a more biblical perspective. Our choices begin to be motivated by love and truth and not selfishness.

However.... we need not to forget that the bible also tells us that we will never be sinless (1 John 1:8) and that we will endure temptation.... alot of times the temptations and trials we endure are just a simple act of obedience.... That is what God cares about!!!!  He wants our hearts prepared to do what He asks us to do when he asks us to do it.

John 14:15 :

If you love me, you will obey what I command.

Jesus wants us to have faith and believe in Him and his word!  As we do that we will become more like him.  As the process is not short but through an ever growing relationship we can have the highest of joys, the deepest of peace, and receive the fullest measure of God's love and power each day of our lives!!!

But the most important commandment we must have is to love God with all our heart, mind, and soul!  Of course, there is a cost for doing God's will by obeying His commands. However, keep that important commandment and it is not hard to want to be a good and faithful servant!
