Current mood:  rejuvenated
We recently spent a weekend at Marshman Studios annoying our good friend and engineer Marshall Green, who agreed to put up with us if we bought him a bunch of Coronas!
We came out with 4 new demos which we have graciously put up here on our player for you all to enjoy. Download 'em, Add 'em, Burn 'em for your friends so they can play frisbee golf with 'em, we don't care.
We're headin' back in the studio soon so this is just a taste of what's to come!

Missing In Distraction (released 2005)
Pitfall Records
I've been sitting on this album for over a year now, not because I've been avoiding it, I'm just really far behind with review music. I really hate being behind, because I ultimately lose the opportunity to talk and write about a great disc when it is fresh and new to the scene. And here is a prime example of my seemingly consistent problem, Downtrodn have managed to produce one of the best albums of 2005 and I missed the opportunity to promote this disc to it's fullest potential. "Missing In Distraction", a fourteen song masterpiece that showcases Downtrodn's ability to write great punk rock music and impressionable lyrics for a broad audience to enjoy. Downtrodn's music and attitude isn't condescending, nor is it shy and reserved, instead the band lays it out for you to enjoy, dance and ultimately kick someone's ass, because they allow the music to speak for itself...  Through Aaron's tremendous guitar skills to Ken's downright murderous approach to working the bass and Daeron's solid bashing of the skins, the guys are passionate about the tunes on this album, it's more than evident, it's part of the appeal. When a band has as much love for the music and the scene as Downtrodn does, you can't help but pick up that energy through everything they touch, "Missing In Distraction" is no exception. So about the tracks featured on here? Well first of all the music is amazing, like I said the energy put off by Downtrodn is something almost magical, it's just rare to really feel the passion produced by a band. All of the fourteen tracks float in the two minute area, and almost all of them have a punk-metal vibe to them. The metal part, you really pick that up throughout the disc, mainly due to Aaron's guitar influences. Perhaps one of the best crafted songs in Downtrodn's catalog has to be "Short Leave". I'm not sure why I'm so drawn to it; it's part the blazing fury, the other part is that it's catchy, it's a sing along, there's just something about it! From that point, the band manages a solid batch of songs that have a influence ranging from metal to punk to hardcore, and even to traditional Irish rock (huh?). By the second half of the album, out come the fists, Downtrodn breaks free with some very politically pointed messages. "Drafted" and "America Lost" are just two of the socially charged dirges crafted by the band to get you to open your eyes and realize the crimes waged against you by your own elected officials. The band has never struck me as being overtly political, but they have a viewpoint that others are afraid to express, and it makes for great music. So ultimately, I am trapped in this album! I find myself listening to it over and over, and replaying my favorite tracks ("Short Leave" and "Drafted"), and running out to try to make it to every show that Downtrodn plays. I've said it before, this is one of the best albums of 2005! "Missing In Distraction" is for fans of punk rock that's mixed with metal flakes glistening with sweat of hard work and passion! Downtrodn is your new savior! Don't miss this great album, I'm still kicking myself for reviewing it until now! -MG

Downtrodn Missing In Distraction

Downtrodn Missing In Distraction / 2004 Same Old Shoes / 14 Tracks / http://www.downtrodn.com / Reviewed 07 January 2006

While a track like 12th Street has somewhat of a nod to Pennywise, there is a fury behind Downtrodns music that goes well beyond that skater punk. The chorus present on 12th Street is beyond reproach; there is no doubt that the infectious quality of it will inspire mosh pits and pogoing the likes of which the world has never seen. What is the biggest hook for Downtrodn is their mixture of traditional metal riffs with punk; of all the tracks on Missing In Distraction, the track that best exemplifies this is Grounded. Grounded has a subject matter and overall sound that approximates The Misfits, but with a sort of freshness about it that The Misfits can never enjoy owing to their dated sound.

Each of the tracks is done with a professionalism to them that would allow for heavy radio rotation should the right individual find it; Blue Devil even ups the ante further in that the chorus is catchy, the guitar work immaculate, and a listener cannot help but be ensnared by Downtrodn here. What really distinguishes Downtrodn from the mass of other punk bands currently out on the market is that there is a smart consideration of the arrangements that lead every track. Instead of inserting the same three or four chord type of thing into every track on Missing In Distraction, Downtrodn mixes up different bits of instrumentation to keep their sound fresh in the ears of all the listeners that stumble upon the disc. What should impress listeners the most is the infusion of a walking bass line during Drafted, something that really gives Downtrodn a sound that screams Rawhide instead of Anarchy in the U.K..

There is actually some meat to Missing In Distraction; the album will not simply shit out after twenty minutes, but sticks around tenaciously for over a half-hour to arouse, impress, and attack listeners. October 15th is the next big break-out track for Downtrodn, relying heavily on a set of metal-infused guitar riffs (a la Sum 41) for the bulk of the track, but also relying heavily on the fury provided by the drums to really make the track. Downtrodn is the rare example of a band that can actually put forth the same sort of energy that theyve been known for live in their studio album, and there is no doubt in my mind that this album is getting high amounts of play throughout Columbus, Ohio and wherever else they have sent CDs.

Top Tracks: America Lost, October 15th

Rating: 7.0/10

Missing In Distraction
2005
Pitfall Records

I caught this fiery young Ohio punk/thrash trio playing at a dive club in the middle of nowhere a few months back, and was mightily impressed by their tight stage chops, well-crafted, semi-political lyrics and ability to balance serious subject matter with down-to-earth live personalities. Highlights on this album include the absolutely ferocious lead cut, 12th Street, the anthemic, timely Drafted and the skittery, paranoid axe assault of America Lost, a song thats so true and so in the moment that it doesnt have a chance in hell of making it to any airwaves anywhere this side of pirate radio: This is what they call American life/ This is what they call America lost/ In the debris/ Oh, youll see ... Righteously pissed, well read, and obviously not about to take any shit from anybody, Downtrodn are definitely an outfit to keep an ear out for in the next few years leading up to national elections. Somebody get these guys on a Rock The Vote tour, ASAP!!

Downtrodn "Missing in Distraction"
  By Jared Fewlass (7-4-2005)

Aaron Collins, lead singer and guitarist for the Columbus, OH act, Downtrodn, got it right with his lyrics. One of the greatest local bands I've seen, and one of my favorite cds.

Downtrodn holds on to their punk roots, with sing along anthems such as "We are the living, the living dead," while introducing more of a hardcore style with blistering guitar solos, and high pitched screaming from bass player Ken Moss.

This band has been together for over 10 years, and their experience shows in the latest release. I was blown away the first time I saw them, with drummer Daeron Wilson impressing all with his fast moving hands and his foot high mohawk.

Downtrodn is currently on their west coast tour with dates set up in Seattle, San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and more. For more information, visit Downtrodn's web-page.

Downtrodn
Missing in Distraction
(Pitfall)

This is one of the better punk discs I've heard come out of midwest.
Fourteen two minute tracks that don't lose their edge and the lyrics
are
just as sharp. With anthemic lines like "we just a place to riot" or
"this is what they call American life" it's easy to see that this three
piece has a future. Eighteen summer tour dates will bring Downtrodn out
to the west coast in July and you can count me among the crowd. -er

Write up of "ANTS ON THE HILL" in March 2004 issue of HUSTLER magazine.
by; unknown
This release may boast cover art by HUSTLER cartoonist Dan Collins, but the music inside is no joke. This Columbus, Ohio, trio rips through NOFX- inspired punk, tackling police brutality , religious zealotry and urban blight. Turn it up and tear it down.

Punk Nite 4 brings out-of-town punkers
This October marks the one-year anniversary of the area’s first Punk Nite. Promoter Mike Durian will host Punk Nite 4 at The Brewery in Troy this weekend, featuring numerous underground local and out-of-town bands.
The punk rock bands performing will include Legbone, The Jackalopes, Eko-tox, The Indigents, The Street Freaks and Downtrodn.
“We’ve never been (to Punk Nite) before, but from what I’ve heard, there are lots of explosions and bodily fluids,” joked Daeron Wilson, drummer and backing vocalist of Downtrodn. “We’re looking forward to taking pictures for future use in blackmail and profiteering!”
Downtrodn, a balls-to-the-wall, northern Ohio punk band, comprised of musical trio Wilson, guitarist/lead vocalist Aaron Collins and bassist/vocalist Ken Moss, attributes its fast-paced, lyrical music medley style “to free verse ramblings written under demonic possession,” according to Wilson.
“We are influenced by every band we listen to, every band we know and every artist, poet or political speaker we enjoy,” Wilson added.
Downtrodn recently released an album entitled Ants on the Hill. Prior releases include Social Skar (2001) and Riot (2000). Attempting to “blow as many minds as (it) can,” with power-heavy songs open to interpretation, Downtrodn performs at top speed. “It’s all a blur until about ten minutes after the set,” Wilson said.
Having played musical instruments since childhood, the guys of Downtrodn weren’t the least bit intimidated by acoustic guitars and drums that were “bigger than (they) were.”
“When Aaron and I were kids we used to play records and pretend we were a band,” Wilson said.
“I did all that show choir shit but when I was 14,” Collins said, “I found punk rock, and any hope of a normal life was promptly flushed down the toilet.”
Downtrodn is currently touring the Tri-State area. In addition to the band’s Punk Nite 4 performance, it will also perform on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Bernie’s Distillery in Columbus with The Atomic Spiders.
Punk Nite 4 will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at The Brewery, located at 111 W. Water St. in Troy. The show starts at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for ages 18-20 and $2 for ages 21 and up. Call (937) 339-8595 for more information. For more information on specific bands, check out Legbone at www.legbone.com, The Jackalopes at www.thejackalopes.net, Eko-tox at www.geocities.com/ecotox/, The Indigents at www.theindigents.com, The Street Freaks at www.streetfreaks.cjb.net and Downtrodn at www.downtrodn.com.

VILLIAGE BUZZ (NOVEMBER 2001)
Excerpts from( REVIEW OF "SOCIAL SKAR" )
By:ANNE O'MALLEY

Getting soft? why are you worried about Anthrax in your mailbox when there are far more toxic substances in your kitchen tap water? Try this blast of total disregard for authority to toughen your "tude". DOWNTRODN three punk boyz from Ohio, is tight - this CD is a 5-song punch in the stomach. I've never seen DOWNTRODN live, but their CD makes me want to...................(Departure) has some pretty groovy words.- "I'll never be your whore again, now I believe in something more - I sharpen my edge". I think the song may be about kicking drug addiction , but it could be about any addiction. Like working for the man , or diong things that are less than right because they are convenient. I like the tune, made me think of early LA punk...............
(Candid Hate) delivers a message about election time- "There ain't no f*n' option , no way to rock the vote" - makes me think of last year's comedy/tragedy that we called a presidential election.

OUR FIRST WRITE UP EVER
"Downtrodn"
By Sergio T. Ruiz
The Villiage Buzz
Year: 2000

Over the years I have met a ton of young upstart punk bands. When I find a band that exhibits strong influences of old school punk, I immediately start to wonder where they picked this stuff up.
Believe it or not, it has been more than 20 years since punk rose out of the garages and enveloped brutally alienated kids around the world and united them. It just seems intriguing that a young band could be so in touch with something that happened so long ago.
In a lot of cases, when you pose the question of their roots , a band will snap back that they are old school, and have been doing this from the beginning. An easy answer but sometimes hard to believe. A quick look at a timeline places the Old Days quite a few years before their birth.
Not Downtrodn. Downtrodn embody the brutal honesty that shines through their music and thier personalities. Curious as to what answer I might recieve to my question, i was hit with an answer I didn't expect. An Honest answer.
Daeron (drummer and back up vocals) tells the story this way.

"Back when we(Aaron and Daeron) were 14 and were just getting into punk rock, we were really into Green Day. We would sit around and listen to their records all the time, and we dug it. We wanted more , so we read the credits, and found out who they thanked. Then, we got those bands' records, and listened to them, and found out who they thanked and so on."

Green Day must have had some great credits, as a quick listen to Downtrodn's music shows influences from al over the world of punk.
The process of putting together the band was monumental to say the least. After the decision to start a band was made, the grim realization was also made that not only did they possess no instruments, they didn't even know how to play. The band played a game of round robin with instruments and players until they finally reached the lineup they have now: Aaron "Ratboy" Collins (lead guitar and vocals), Luke "Mental Kase" Smith (rhythm guitar and vocals), Ken "Kibob" Moss (bass guitar and vocals) and , Daeron "D-Day" Wilson (drums and backup vocals). They took their name from the first song Daeron and Aaron wrote.
With their lineup firmed up, and a ton of songs under thir belt (and all underthree minutes!) they took their package over to Marshman Studios. The result of this tryst is their debut effort, RIOT. Featuring seven of thir tunes, the CD gives the listener a taste of what they are all about, but that's about all a CD could deliver. The band is about being as well as about playing, and their is no way to get a feel for them without seeing their live show. This is where the band comes to life, presenting an almost comic book approch to punk. Pure energy, and a twelve(at least!) inch spiked mohawk.

So Aaron and I were smoking a few cigarettes outside the practice space today talking about all the stuff that's going on with the band and it was decided that maybe a little update on here might be a good idea just in case one of you wants to know. Luckily I couldn't sleep through tenth grade typing class. It's almost the end of January and that doesn't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things but it's time for another random Downtrodn update

So here we go again.......Coming up in March (March 16th-March 26th) we will be doing a tour with our kick ass friends GIRLUSH FIGURE. The dates are being updated on our calander as they solidify but It's starting out in Pittsburgh on March 16th. Then we're coming back through good 'ol Columbus for St. Patty's day with GIRLUSH FIGURE, LEGBONE , and THE BLOODY IRISH BOYS (the band that all of DOWNTRODN is a part of), Then it's Punk Nite in Troy with the same lineup before we leave Ohio to continue the tour, I believe it's  Ending in Ken's homeland of West Virginia. Check the show schedule for further updates.

In June or July We are going back out for another month on the road heading west to the coast and back. This time It will be the normal lineup of DOWNTRODN since Ken is Coming with us now that his father is in good health.

We are also heading back up to our buddy Mitch from LEGBONE's house to seriously jumpstart our website with all his wicked computer knowledge. Things on the list to be done (Merch Page, Hell of a lot more pictures, and whatever we think up after a few drinks)

That's all I can think of for now so until we meet again.....

Daeron

SO THE INSOMNIAC DRUMMER AND KING OF RAMBLES IS HERE TO TELL YOU ABOUT OUR RECENT TRAVELS. A FEW PROBLEMS LED TO "ALL OR NOTHING HC"'s DRUMMER TOMMY NEEDING TO GO HOME AND SINCE WE WERE GOING ON TOUR WITH THEM ANYWAY IT WAS  DECIDED I SHOULD PLAY DRUMS FOR THEM FOR THE REST OF THE TOUR. AFTER A FEW DAYS OF JAMMING WITH THEM WE HAD A SHORT SET BUT A SHORT SET IS BETTER THAN HAVING TO GO HOME. SO WE ALL HIT THE ROAD THAT THURSDAY TOWARDS NEW YORK FOR OUR FIRST STOP OF THE TOUR (A SHOW AT CBGB's ON FRIDAY MAY 27th) TRAFFIC WAS A MOTHER FUCKER AND A HALF BUT WE MADE IT DOWN WITH TIME TO SPARE AND WE ALL HUNG OUT IN FRONT FOR A BIT THEN WANDERED AROUND BEFORE GOING BACK IN TIME FOR THE SHOW.

FOR THAT NIGHT AND EVERY OTHER NIGHT ON THE TOUR I DID THE SET WITH ALL OR NOTHING AND THEN THE SET WITH US. AND ALL THE SHOWS WERE A BLAST SO I'M NOT SAYING IT AGAIN.

US AND "ALL OR NOTHING "ENDED UP IN AN ALL NIGHT PIZZA PLACE IN NEW ROCHELLE AND WE ALL SLEPT IN OUR RESPECTIVE TOUR VANS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN NEW YORK AND PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND WHERE OUR SHOW FOR SATURDAY THE 28th WAS. AFTER THE SHOW AND WHILE THE BANDS WERE LOADING OUT A BIG FIGHT ERUPTED OUT IN FRONT OF THE VFW.... WE ALL LOADED OUR VANS AS FAST AS WE COULD WHEN THE ROCKS STARTED FLYING, KNIFE CAME OUT AND BLOOD STARTED TO DRIP ON THE SIDEWALK. WE ALL CRASHED AT THIS REALLY COOL GIRL NAMED ANDREA's HOUSE ACROSS TOWN AND I SLEPT IN THE VAN WITH A BASEBALL BAT SO EVERYONE WOULD FEEL A LITTLE BETTER ABOUT STAYING IN TOWN. NEXT WE WERE OFF TO BOSTON WHERE AFTER THE RAIN WE GOT TO WALK AROUND AND SEE THE CITY WITH OUR TOUR GUIDE BILL FROM TOXIC NARCOTIC. THE GIG WAS A GOOD OLD FASHIONED BASEMENT SHOW WITH A BBQ GOING ON OUTSIDE.

MONDAY (MEMORIAL DAY) IT WAS BACK TO NEW YORK AND A SHOW AT SIN-E. IT WAS A STRANGELY MIXED SHOW BUT A GOOD FUCKING TIME AS WE ALWAYS MANAGE TO HAVE. THE NEXT DAY WE PLAYED HARRISBURG PENNSYLVANIA WITH OUR BUDDIES "COMMON ENEMY".LAST TIME WE SAW THEM BEFORE THAT WAS HERE IN TOWN AND THEY WERE GETTING READY TO GO HOME FROM THE SHOW IN THE MIDDLE OF A BLIZZARD. ANYWAY...WEDNESDAY WAS JERSEY (WHERE I ONCE SWORE WE'D NEVER GO AGAIN) AND WE GOT TO SEE OUR BUDDY PAULIE BEFORE HE WAS DRIVEN OFF BY THE CRAZY DRUNK GIRL AT THE BAR THAT WAS TRYING TO PICK UP ANYONE WITH A COCK AND A PULSE. OR FROM THE STORIES OF BLACK MAGIC SHE WAS SPOUTING MAYBE A PULSE DIDN'T MATTER. OUR SHOW IN AKRON WAS CANCELLED SO THE NEXT DAY WE ALL DROVE BACK TO NEW YORK TO ACTUALLY HANG AROUND AND WE TOOK THE SUBWAY FROM THE BRONX TO THE STATUE OF LIBERTY SO KEN COULD TAKE A PICTURE FOR HIS GIRLFRIEND. I ENJOYED THE SUBWAY, TOO BAD PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AROUND HERE SUCKS ASS.

FRIDAY WAS BUFFALO AND SINCE WE ALL HAD THE TIME WE WENT OVER TO NIAGARA FALLS AND LOOKED AT WATER BEFORE THE THREE OF US GOT BORED AND JUST WENT TO THE HORROR WAX MUSEUM. WE PLAYED AT A NICE INDOOR SKATEPARK AND HEADED OFF TOWARDS CHICAGO IN THE RAIN LATER THAT NIGHT.

CHICAGO WAS SATURDAY JUNE 4th AND THE LAST SHOW OF THE TOUR. IT WAS AT THE ICE HOUSE. I DIDN'T CATCH ALL THE BAND'S NAMES BUT "MINORITY ONE" STARTED THE NIGHT OFF AND BLEW A FUSE.AND ROCKED IT RIGHT. THEN "THE MANHANDLERS" KILLED THE PLACE. I PLAYED MY LAST SET AS A TEMPORARY MEMBER OF "ALL OR NOTHING HC" THEN WE PLAYED. IT WAS PROBABLY THE HOTTEST PLACE I'VE EVER PLAYED AND THE PLACE WAS PACKED. WE FINISHED STRONG AND I  WALKED OFF STAGE SOAKED WITH SWEAT LIKE ALL DRUMMERS DO I GUESS. AS IRONY LIKES TO REAR IT'S HEAD WE FINALLY DIDN'T HAVE TO CARAVAN TOWARDS THE NEXT STOP AND WERE HANING OUT WITH SOME WICKED PEOPLE BUT KEN NEEDED TO GET HOME FOR HIS GIRLFRIENDS GRADUATION SO SADLY AND VERY VERY RELUCTANTLY I GOT IN THE VAN. THE TOUR WAS OVER, ALL THAT WAS LEFT WAS TO GET HOME BY MORNING. I HATE THAT FEELING ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE ROAD. IT'S LIKE COMING DOWN FROM A LONG TRIP OR WAKING UP FROM A REALLY GOOD DREAM.

SO NOW WE'RE HOME FOR THE TIME BEING. A FEW SHOWS AROUND OHIO AND PENNSYLVANIA  THEN WE'RE OFF FOR THE U.S. TOUR AT THE BEGINNING OF JULY.

THERE'S A LOT MORE I COULD HAVE SAID BUT IF YOU EVEN MADE IT THIS FAR I AM IMPRESSED. UNTIL NEXT TIME....

YOURS

DAERON

“ Downtrodn is punk, not mtv punk.Bare-bones, stripped down, high energy punk rockwith lyrics riddled in political, personal, and sometimes surreal images. They are a hard working and hard traveling outfit that understands, True punk is more than it’s trappings.” Keith Cousineau (Midgard Comics and Entertainment) “ These guys are an amazing combination of talent, energy, and hairspray! The music is all good things punk, rockin’ kickin’ pissed off , anti-establishment and the lyrics are thought provoking. It is a unique and interesting combination of old and new school” “I remember the first time I worked with them, we knocked out the tracking for 7 songs in a single, 11 hour session. Walls were cracked, pictures vibrated askew, small animals were sent running for cover and that was just while the band was unloading.” Marshall Green of Marshman Studios
