Current mood:  accomplished

The new Miss Crawford County knows her platform well, and not just from studying about it.

Shauna Nicole Rice of Canadohta Lake said the pain from the rheumatoid arthritis she was diagnosed with as a juvenile is sometimes so bad she has to take time off from dancing, one of her life's passions.

Nobody would have guessed that, though, as the 20-year-old expertly back-flipped and balanced during her self-choreo-

graphed acrobatic dance to "An Endangered Species" at Monday's 52nd annual Miss Crawford County Scholarship Pageant, which was moved from the Crawford County Fairgrounds to Allegheny College because of the day's poor weather.

Rice will be promoting her platform, "Help JRA (Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis) Today," throughout her year-long reign.

"I'm not only gaining more education" personally about the condition, "I'm also becoming a better advocate" for other young people affected by it, she said before being crowned by outgoing Miss Crawford County 2006 Ashley Elizabeth Borchilo. Seven young ladies vied for the crown.

As the new Miss Crawford County, Rice receives a $2,000 scholarship from Miss Craw-ford County Scholarship Pageant Inc. as well as a $2,000 tuition and $4,000 housing scholarship from the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville.

Brittani Charnele DeVore, 18, of Saegertown, was named first runner-up; she was named third runner-up at last year's pageant. Should Rice not be able to continue her reign for any reason, DeVore would assume the title of Miss Crawford County. Her platform was "CARE for a Cause: Providing Hope to a Hurting Nation."

She received a $500 scholarship from the pageant association.

Rounding out the queen's court were Meredith Semon, 19, an Allegheny College student from West Newton, second runner-up; and Samantha Jo Rice, 22, of Guys Mills, third runner-up. Semon received a $250 scholarship awarded by Meadville Lions Club, and Rice received a $100 scholarship awarded by the pageant board.

The Miss Crawford County Scholarship Pageant Board voted Monday to move this year's pageant, themed "Country — This One's for the Girls," from the fairgrounds to Shafer Auditorium at Allegheny College's Henderson Campus Center due to weather-related safety concerns.

For the talent portion of the competition, each contestant showed off their dancing abilities. Pageant officials said the event was the first time in the history of the pageant that the contestants were all dancers.

Miss Pennsylvania Rachel Brooks and Borchilo also performed. Tom White served as master of ceremonies.

Cheryl Cameron and Shannon Kocan were co-directors of the pageant, with Jen Yeager and Melissa Bartholomew from Kristine's School of Dance serving as choreographers.

(Erie, Pennsylvania; April 18, 2007)  David Hodas, owner of the Erie Freeze Football Club of the American Indoor Football Association released the following statement:

"The rivalry between the Erie Freeze and Canton Legends goes back to the earliest genesis of our brand of Indoor Football.  The teams are combatants on the field and occasionally our organizational differences have spilled outside the lines of the gridiron.

The 2007 season has not been the kindest to the Erie Freeze.  As a promise to our fans and the City of Erie, I wish to unequivocally announce my support of the coaching staff and our players who wear the crest the Freeze championing our area each and every week certainly for the love of the great game of football.

Despite our team's record, I feel that Saturday night is a tremendous opportunity for our franchise.  My belief in our team is so strong that I have no qualms in announcing that I am guaranteeing an Erie Freeze victory over the defending champion Canton Legends on Saturday, April 21 at the "Igloo" in the Tullio Arena.

The Legends have never defeated the Freeze on our home turf and they will not on Saturday.  This is an awesome proposition for our fans and for our team.  There is no loss of respect between the two teams, but with the amount of player movement between the squad and its inherit baggage, not to mention  last season's debacle over "stealing a playoff game"  still rings strong with our team and fans.

My promise is this, 'I, Dave Hodas, guarantee a victory over the Canton Legends on April 21.  If the Freeze fail to win, a possibility that I don't foresee, any ticket holder will be eligible for a free ticket for a game in the 2008 season.  Your ticket stub can be redeemed with a voucher for a game ticket next regular season.  This offer precludes or excludes any other offer and has no cash value.'

With this guarantee, I know our fans will be here to cheer our team to victory, concluded Hodas."

Fans under 12 can attend April 7th game FREE!*

(March 28, 2007) Young football fans and their parents in the Erie area won't have to wait until Easter for a special visit from the Easter Bunny.  As part of a special Spring Break promotion, the Erie Freeze of the American Indoor Football Association are offering fans 12 years old and younger a chance to earn a free* ticket to the Freeze's next home game on Saturday, April 7 against the Huntington Heroes at the "Igloo" in the Tullio Arena.

The promotion is part of the Freeze's Easter "Egg-stravaganza" where children 12 and under participating in the team's Easter Coloring contest only need to turn in their finished artwork to the Tullio Arena Box Office to receive a free ticket for the April 7th game.  Participants are eligible for the free ticket when an adult or guardian purchases one regularly priced admission ticket.

All sections of the "Igloo" are eligible except the sold out "Freezer" section.  In essence, on Saturday, April 7 an entire family can attend a Freeze game for under $ 15.  One adult purchase must accompany each "family" unit for supervisory reasons.

Contest pictures have been delivered to local elementary schools, but coloring contest pictures can also be obtained and printed via the internet at www.eriefreeze.com.  Fans can also obtain a coloring page by stopping in the Freeze office at 110 East 8th Street during normal business hours or by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Erie Freeze at 110 East 8th Street; Erie, PA 16501 postmarked by April 4.

The entries will be judged by Freeze and media personnel and will be eligible for prizes including an official AIFA game football.  There are categories for Boys and Girls ages 0-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12.

The game is also billed as the Erie's most "Egg – Stravagant" Easter Egg Hunt where children will be eligible to win prizes the entire evening courtesy of our Chillers Dance Squad.

Log on to www.eriefreeze.com for more information.  Entries can be redeemed until kickoff time at the box office on April 7.  Free ticket offer must accompany voucher and or contest entry.

Freeze owner Dave Hodas remarked, "With spring break around and parents in need of something to do with the kids, we felt this would be a great way to introduce our young fans to the games.  Just consider it an early gift from the Easter Yeti."
