Current mood:  content

Northern Labour Party is back in the studio for our 2nd EP.  It is our intent for this next release to embody more of a live feel.  As such, we are recording most tracks in only 1 or 2 takes, making very quick decisions on sounds we're using, and printing our live energy to tape, er, hard disk.

Last week we finished up tracking all the guitar and bass parts for the first 4 songs of the EP.  Recording is moving along well and we are all pleased with the overall vibe of the songs and how they are turning out.  This EP is hopefully going to capture the passion and energy of our live set.

We have started recording the synthesizer parts, and they sound good thus far.  We did some experimenting with routing the Alesis Andromeda into the Moog Voyager's filters, and then routing the Moog output to an ARP Solus with the ARP's filter self-oscillating, and then the ARP back into the Moog 's input.  We're hoping to create some sonically interesting tones that are a little more unpredictable than past efforts, yet still yielding very musical and melodic results.  We'll see how it pans out.

Tonight Dex will be returning to Slumlord Studios to lay down some more analog keys to the EP.  Thursday Scott will begin tracking vocals for the first 4 songs of the record.  Like always we would love to hear from you so don’t be a stranger...drop us a line to say hi.

On Saturday September 19th 2009 Northern Labour Party made their way back to slumlord studios in Fullerton CA to break ground on their second EP which is yet to be titled.  The goal for the first day of recording was to complete the tracking of the drums and this came as no easy feat due to a slew of technical difficulties…i.e. kick drum spring breaking and a hard drive crashing…hey things happen.  We rolled with the punches and ended up with 4 great drum tracks thanks to Colin banging out some serious beats! The drums on this EP will capture the live energy and sound that Northern Labour Party is becoming known for.

Last night Scott and Steve began recording the “main” guitar tracks at slumlord studios.  Experimenting with a dual mic setup using a classic ribbon mic and sm 57 mic they dialed in a guitar tone that they were quite pleased with and we think you will be too.  After a few hours of tracking the main guitar tracks are finished and the songs are starting to take shape.

Over the next week Steve will be laying down some bass track.  Although, we still have a long way to go with recording this EP, we are excited about the direction of the new songs and think you will all really enjoy them.  Don’t me a stranger and drop in from time to time to see updates on the recording of our second EP or just to say hi.  Thanks for your support and we hope to see you all soon!

Northern Labour Party will be releasing its debut CD EP in May of 2009.  Most will probably never hear of the band, let alone the news about the debut CD EP, however, for a select few; this may be a very important moment in their lives as it may break the monotony of life for those in Irvine, give a new lens for those in the uniformly groomed Aliso Viejo, or make those in Huntington Beach realize there’s people out here who choose not to drive big pickup trucks.

We sincerely hope that folks will enjoy the physical pressing of the EP, which is currently posted in its entirety on our MySpace page.  We intend to have it available through a simple PayPal transaction or at shows for dirt cheap, as we believe, that despite inflationary pressures on our currency, that the expenditure of a few US dollars should still entitle persons to a decent product.

Please come see us live, form a good band, or listen to our CD at full volume.  Thanks a ton.

Last night Northern Labour Party had yet another visit to slumlord studios in Fullerton to do some recording on our first EP.  Recording is really starting to take form and we are pretty much done tracking drums, keys and guitars.  Due to the fact that there we all come from different musical backgrounds it has been quite an adventure intertwining them to be one unified, cohesive sound.  Over the last couple of months of recording we have really had the opportunity to develop and build our sound into something that we love and think you will too… It will still be a little while before we have anything posted and ready for you to hear but we are starting to track vocals tomorrow night so we are steadily moving forward.  The rough instrumental tracks are sounding solid and we are very pleased and excited to get this EP done and online for everyone to check out.  Thanks for checking in and we look forward to playing live for you soon!

So we started recording our first ep two weeks ago or so at slumlord studios in Fullerton and things are coming along well.  Over the past two weeks we have tracked drums and the first round of guitar tracks and we are all pleased with how it is going thus far.  Last night was mono synth night and the Minimoog and the arp solus were busted out to lay down some thick, fat analog tones.  Over the next couple weeks the plan is to finish up the mono synth recording and then lay down the poly synth tracks to complete the keys.  Things are sounding good and we are excited for everyone to hear the songs in the near future.  Stay tuned for more updates and thanks for checking in.
