Session 1- It'll Be It'll Be... I wasn't sure how I'd begin my first entry in my newly created "song-blog" so I came out to sit on the rooftop of my Hollywood apartment and watch the sun set over the city. Yes- as glamorous as that sounds I should preface this by saying...I don't usually take the time, or seemingly have the time to watch the sunset. Usually I'm just starting work, or I'm caught up in something that seems to take precedence. But tonight, the silhouettes of palm trees and skyscrapers backlit by light pink streaks that effortlessly ease into a faded orange glow, remind me of just how beautiful the universe can be when we actually take the time to soak it in, and just how lucky I am to have the opportunity to do just that tonight. To often I am caught up...we are all caught up in the little stuff that masks itself as big stuff. The audio track for this week is a song that I actually wrote back in the months just before summer, when I found out that a dear friend of mine's mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She was such a beautiful woman inside and out and someone I always looked up to and respected. She was like a second mom to me growing up and she was also my mom's best friend. I found myself not only truly sad and bewildered by the news, but left wondering what one says to someone who is dying. What would be the last thing my mom says to her best friend? What would would be the last thing her daughters say to her? What would the loves' of her life say to her? What would I say if it were one of my parents? It seemed so odd to me that out of all the things one might face in life - death is the only certainty, yet ironically, it is the one thing that most of us are never prepared to deal with. I was blessed to have one last very precious conversation with this special lady before she passed, and it seemed so clear that she was the one who knew what to say. She was the one who sounded calm and at peace. She was the one who was saying "it'll be ok." I'm pretty sure that the evening I sat down to write this song, it wrote itself. Over the course of the last year it seems that not only my life, but the lives of many of my close friends and family have taken such different turns. Technology, governments, everything is changing quicker than it ever has and of course one might say that's just how life goes - and they'd be absolutely right. But for some reason, it just feels with the world on such a fast track at the moment, it's so easy to get caught up and overwhelmed by all of the changes happening to us and around us and by the things we can't control. It's even easier to label that change as something bad, instead of something that might be pushing us to grow in a new direction. It's in the rare moments- like seeing a beautiful sunset, that I'm reminded that everything is moving in the direction it is meant to, even if I don't understand it. It's in the rare moments - like having one final conversation with a loved one, that I'm reminded that each day is a gift and that always - in the end it'll be ok.

Why and what is my "songblog"? Welcome to the first, of what I hope will be a long-running weekly "song-blog" series. Each week I'll be posting 2 new items. One will be a new original song (audio only - that I'll make downloadable only on my website)...no bells and whistles for the most part - just a simple, live, acoustic recording. Click the "play" button to listen to the tune and the"lyrics" link to display the song lyrics. The other posting will be a video clip of a different cover tune each week. Over the course of the last year or so I always have lots of people asking "what new stuff are you working on?" or "when's your next show?" So I figured this would be a great way to not only give everyone a glimpse of that, but also put some new music out there in the cosmos before too many months go by without a new album surfacing ...plus it'll keep me on my toes. If ya like what ya hear or see, I just ask that you please pass my website on to new ears and eyes and share what I'm sharing with you. It's very easy for anyone to subscribe to the blog! Just sign up at the bottom of the page. If ya have any cover requests, I'll do my best to learn 'em. Just send the request through the contact form on my website. Peace, love & good music, x jen
