In which Jason gushes all over the place, as usual, about how great the guys in his band are, how winning the Rumble was like getting hit with a big soft balloon full of candy and happiness, and how the next record's CD Release will rock your face off.

Myspace won't let you link directly, but click to www.limelightmagazine.com and then wait about 10 seconds for our faces to show up.

So April 24th we won the Rumble. Around April 27 we could see straight again and PEZ and I booked all five studios that we won time at. We'd finished the record already at my own studio, but this was an opportunity to go into famous, great-sounding rooms an make the whole record again with all of their incredible gear and alongside their own talented staff.

May 6th - 13 hour drum session at New Alliance, drums tracked to analog tape. Foster nails every song on the record. John Taft is incredibly knowledgeable and patient. Foster is playing along to the previous versions of the songs on what would have been the record.

May 7th - last time I got to hang out and relax.

May 8th through 12th - Bass, keys and guitar are tracked in that order at Mad Oak with Benny Grotto and Joe (?). Best time in a studio ever. Everyone becomes friends and ideas are tossed around for 5 days straight. Foster stops in on May 8th but then leaves for Hawaii for at least four months the next day. Will we see him behind the kit again? Who knows. We hope so. Toward the end of the sessions, our friends from The Lights Out, Muy Cansado, The Motion Sick and Logan 5 and the Runners stop by to lend a hand with handclaps, percussion and trumpets. Like a big recording party.

May 13th and 14th - lead vocal tracking at Zippah. Just me and Max, the engineer. The contrast with Mad Oak is a bit shocking, but in retrospect I'm not sure if I would have benefited from having everyone there. Get lost in my own head one last time with the words. The lyrics to Last Train are written here, a song that had been troubling me for months but which we were determined to have on the record.

May 15th through 17th - back at my own Mad Science Studios - last chance to fix anything. Our friends Beth and Clara from Eksi Ekso come in to play some strings and it sounds lovely. Glenn French comes in with a theremin for some psychedelic screams. Backing vocals are added here, with Daanen, Justin, and our friend Kelly coming in to deliver some stellar harmonies. I miss Foster the most here - it seems wrong to have him absent vocally on the record, but what are you gonna do...

May 18th and 19th - Mixing at Blue Jay, the most gorgeous recording studio I've ever set foot in. They have a fully capable mixing engineer there for us, but I've waited ages to get my hands on an automated 72-channel Neve console and I pretty quickly decide I'm running the show. Luckily I'm doing a good job, so no-one minds. Talk about daunting electronics. The outboard gear behind you when you're mixing could buy the building, and it's a really nice building. Joel Simches stops by and gives me lots of advice, encouragement and a few real-life button presses here and there to lend some authenticity to the process of mixing on such a mammoth piece of technology.

Two thirteen hour mixing days after 11 straight days of recording. By the end of it my ears are completely fried and I haven't slept properly in over a month. But typing this now I'm listening to the mixes in my favorite headphones and it was all worth it. No matter what anyone else ever thinks of this record, it's always going to be gorgeous to me. And the feeling I had when we finished This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things is back and even stronger - I feel like the record is one cohesive statement sonically, even with an oddball track like Straitjacket in there... it feels like my kid and I'm proud of it. Hope it plays nice with the other kids.

Current mood:  excited
Get yours today!

http://www.livenation.com/edp/eventId/407799

This is going to be a hell of an event - we're coordinating with some amazing video and film artists to create visual backdrops for all of the songs on the new album, which will be projected Pink Floyd-style while the album is played, along with video noise, special guests, and several other surprises.

Our musical cohorts: The flash, power pop stylings of THE CLICK 5! The dance rock explosion of MIDATLANTIC! The soulful rock howl of ALOUD!

Tickets are only $12 in advance, $15 the day of the show.

The Paradise is one of Boston's most gorgeous and best-sounding venues, without a bad seat in the house and decades upon decades of history. On July 11th, The Luxury becomes part of that history.

Won't you come and join us?

I can't believe I forgot to post this, guys. That just goes to show how much of a whirlwind it's been.

After being wildcarded to the finals, we came from behind and took the whole damn thing. Want to see it happen? Click here: http://www.bostonbandcrush.com/2009/04/rumble-crush-finals-rumble.html

It took about a week for it to really sink in. This is a really big deal, and the prize package that we won is beyond belief - basically, you know how we had a whole record pretty much ready? Well, now we're doing it again because we have free access to some of the best studios in the Boston area.

We also played a couple great shows on Sunday - a concert in remembrance of Jeanne Connolly, the wonderful bartender from TT's (where we've played countless shows), where we played a short acoustic set accompanied by Kelly Davis (the voice behind "from a distance" in Seven Stories). Some pics are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgmphoto/sets/72157617703302206/

We also played Mayfair in Harvard Square - Jeanne was able to mostly hold off the rain during our set, although Borek had his lady friend Steph hold umbrellas over his crazy expensive keyboards. Pics are here: www.theluxuryband.com/photo

It's 2:30 am, and I'm just back from recording the drums for the new album, all in one 13-hour stretch at the amazing New Alliance in Boston. John Taft was our capable and very patient and hardworking engineer. The drums sound amazing.

Good night, folks.

Friends, we've never been more flattered and appreciative than we've been these past couple weeks - well, maybe last July but it's a totally different thing. The whole experience of being in this year's Rumble has been fantastic - we've met some great people, made some great friends, and played some fantastic shows with them.

It all ends Friday - we've been wildcarded into the final round alongside Dirty Truckers and Gene Dante and the Future Starlets. It's an honor to have gotten this far, and it's been simply amazing to see how many people truly get what we're doing and have come to love it. Why, it's enough to keep one going - as if we planned to stop.

See you on Friday, then Sunday, then soon after that and so on... until we're without a song to sing.

Cheers,
The Luxury

Rumble Crush: The Luxury

Masters of smack talk and brit-pop, The Luxury: Are you excited to be participating in the 31st WBCN Rock 'n' Roll Rumble?

Jason: Well,
yeah, but it seems like half the competitors are our drinking buddies
so it's kind of weird. Our biggest fear is that we all wind up facing
each other on the same preliminary night.

PEZ: Yeah.
But what's really cool is how many of our friends are in it, too. Dudes
I've known for years, people I used to be in other bands with, even an
old girlfriend.

Are you afraid of the Rumble curse?

Jason: No, because once I was *actually* cursed. Seriously, like
bone-through-nose/warpaint/headdress-wearing
boogieman-style curse. I have no idea what that guy was doing in
Vermont. Come to think of it, I may have just been at Bread and Puppet.
I'm not a hippie.

PEZ: I
personally don't believe a Rumble win can be attributed to a band's
success OR failure. But I'm actually hanging out tonight with the dude
who won it in 1987, so maybe I'll get his take on it.

Do you plan on doing anything special or different for your set?

Jason: I plan on not fucking up all over the place.

PEZ: The last time either of us were in it, Jason & I both lost in the first round. So WINNING would be different.

How far do you think you'll progress in the competition?

Jason: We'll be wildcarded so hard that we'll win the 2050 Rumble on the Moon.

PEZ: Depends what our night looks like, I guess. There are a handful of bands I definitely DON'T want to go up against.

What's your bet on who will make it to the finals?

Jason: If I tell you, that will seriously piss off my bookie.

PEZ: Assuming KG gets healthy, I see no reason why the Celtics couldn't take it again, this year.

Are there any bands you would have picked for the line up this year that didn't get in?

Jason: Lots, but Midatlantic, The Everyday Visuals and the Brendan Boogie Band are probably at the top of the list.

PEZ: I was really surprised to not see MIDATLANTIC on the list. They're like the only band we're friends with who aren't in it.

What band is your favorite past winner?

Jason: 'Til Tuesday. Aimee, will you please return my calls? I just want to make you dinner. I cook well.

PEZ: THE GHOST OF TONY GOLD. Those guys were the shit.

What past competitor do you think was most robbed?

Jason: Fox Pass in 1976.

PEZ: I wasn't present that night, but I have a really hard time believing REVERSE didn't crush everybody in their path.

Any final words or smacktalk before the battle begins?

Jason: Yeah
- to The Lights Out: If you kick our asses as hard as you say you're
going to, finishing your record in my studio is going to be REALLY
AWKWARD.

PEZ: I guess
nobody told THE MOTION SICK that acoustic guitars are for sissies and
grandpas. And I'm not too worried about THE LIGHTS OUT, since at least
1 or 2 of them will end up falling off the stage, drunk. And THICK AS
THIEVES are never gonna win, unless they all grow like 2 feet. And
LOGAN 5 all dress like a bunch of fruits. And those broads in APPLE
BETTY need to get back in the kitchen and make me a sandwich.

Why, hello there!

Here's the short list of what we're up to this year:

THE RUMBLE:
Beginning (and quite possible ending) on April 5th, we'll be in the 31st annual WBCN Rock 'n' Roll Rumble - a long-standing tradition in Boston in which 24 of the thousands of Boston groups are gathered together in an at least semi-friendly competition for all sorts of prizes and, of course, attention, which is all anyone cares about anyway. If you take the whole thing you wind up with a few thousand bucks (tours), free services from all kinds of music-related facilities (album), and promotional considerations galore (mailing list). So come see us at this thing and make some ruckus.

THE LUXURY in the RUMBLE:
Sunday, April 5th at 11pm
Middle East Upstairs
$10, 18+
Show up early if you want to scope our competition.

ALBUM RELEASE PARTY ANNOUNCED!

Saturday, July 11th The Luxury will take the stage at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston to celebrate the completion and release upon the world of the new record. What can we tell you so far? 12 songs, simultaneously bigger, edgier, and more concise than the first record. We're very excited about it.

NEW ALBUM PREVIEWS!
Starting mid-April, we'll be posting a new song each week to our various online listening posts, so if you keep in touch you can check out the entirety of the next record (minus a few clever bits) as we approach the CD Release.

That's what we're up to this year. Sa-weeeet.
