Hey Everyone,

So I know things have been quiet here in the ADIL camp for a while – or it least it seems that way doesn't it? Well, for this reason I think it's time for a proper update. In reality, a lot has happened since the last blog posted back in October. We have a couple of substantial announcements to make and some other fun news to share. Ok, i'll shut the fuck up and get on with it.

The first news to report is the departure of Josh Cyran from the band. The decision for Josh to leave was mutual and there are no hard feelings in either direction. In the end, it was important for Josh to pursue his own musical direction and he is currently working on a solo project. Josh has some great song-writing and production skills so when he is finished you should all go check out what he's accomplished. We thank Josh for all of his contributions to A Dark In The Light as he ushered the band into its two-guitar era. Josh's impact on our sound will certainly be felt for quite some time.

I'll take this time to also announce that our former bassist Rob Macleod has joined a new project. Rob's new band is called Baliset and you should all go to their page (www.mypsace.com/baliset) and check them out! We wish Rob the best of luck in his new endeavor.

Now on to the GOOD news!

Ben is back...soon!~and now he's WIRELESS! That's right, the crazy dread-locked hippie-metal-kid-with-a-bow-tie will now have absolute free reign to get in his skivvys and get in your face! Ladies beware: for Bunjamin, shamelessness is second to godliness...or maybe first.

Also, we are in the process of auditioning guitarists and we have some great prospects. We are definitely excited to see what some fresh blood can infuse into the band. We're looking at this as a great opportunity to put together our strongest lineup to date. Boston area, show us what you have to offer!

Lastly, we're writing again, as part of our project to release our first-ever full-length album sometime in mid 2010. So far we have four new songs in the works and many additional ideas. Add that to a few of the new songs we already have written, and we're more than halfway there!

So I guess that's about it for now. Keep checkin back for more updates as we creep closer to our triumphant return. Cheers!

Hey Everyone,

So I've been around town a bit at some shows, talking to friends/bands, and the common question is "so what's going on with you guys? What is with this hiatus?" It is at this time that I realized there wasn't really an explanation, nor has there been any set plans for the future made public. Well, this blog is going to be as clear of an explanation as there will probably be for a little while because...its complicated...

Simply, there was not one reason for taking this hiatus -- there were several, none of which are enough to justify breaking up the band, but all of which justified taking some time to clear our heads and come up with a better plan for the future. All of these reasons fall under two categories: band-related issues and life-related issues. I think every band comes up against these types of things at some point, and this is our time to re-evaluate.

Non-band related issues were prevalent -- everywhere from financial concerns, to job-related issues, to positive things like me closing on my first condo/house (very exciting, but time-consuming and stressful as well). Simply put, we all had things in our personal lives that needed attention, and the band was taking away from that, and more importantly, that was taking away from the band.

The key point here is that due to these issues, we couldn't devote what we needed to in order to be successful and happy in it. In this day and age, with money being tight and the economy tough, it is more important than ever to really be PASSIONATE about the band you are in, or else it will destroy you. We felt like it was getting to a tipping point where we were forcing it -- trying to make it work because we love the band, but not possessing the tools to do so properly.

In all honesty, there were thoughts and discussions of giving up...is it all worth it we thought? Well, Mike and I can both say with definitiveness now that being away from it for merely a month or so, yes it is worth it, and yes we want to continue! Thanks to anyone who has shown us any support at all since the announcement, it has meant more than you think.

So what about the future? Well, we will most likely not be active in a gigging sense until 2010. Mike and I are planning on doing some writing in our free time so that when we start up again, we have the material for our first full-length album. When we start up again, we will also most likely be doing so with Ben playing bass for us. This is in no way a disrespect to Rob, who has done an admirable job filling-in and beyond that, really is the most siginificant and important bassist in the history of our band. Given Rob's interest in pursuing music in a serious way and our waffling about the status of the band, we all agreed it was best to allow him to pursue other avenues. Somehow, a part of me believes this is not the last show Rob will play with ADIL (or DTL, as we will be when we re-launch).

The bottom line is that I don't know exactly when we will be back, but I do know that when we are, things are going to be more focused and fun. We WILL have a new name, web layout, album, and attitude. 2010 is going to be a big year for  DARKEN THE LIGHT, and we hope as many of you as possible choose to be a part of it.

Thanks for everything and we hope to rock out for you all as soon as possible!

Greetings All,

As some of you may have noticed already, we have somewhat sad news to report in the form of an indefinite hiatus. There are many reasons for this, but the most overriding reason is simply that some of us have alot going on in our personal lives and need to hammer said things out before we can truly focus on the band. We were all getting burnt out and there was some tension as a result, causing the band to cease being fun -- which is what this is all about! The hiatus is indefinite because we haven't formulated a set plan to reconvene, although we are almost 100% certain that we will continue with...

DARKEN THE LIGHT. When we do start up again there will be alot of changes and the main one will be our band name. As part of a more streamlined, consistent, and professional approach, we think this name change is the right move for us to ring in a new era with the band. We also have a brand new professional web layout and album design that we will release when we start up again, so look out for that.

But what about right now?

We have our last show before hiatus THIS FRIDAY in SALEM at the Dodge Street Bar & Grille. Props to our friend Anderson from Dark Sky Productions for setting us up with this gig. We will be playing 3rd around 11 PM, so if you want to see us play anytime in the next 3-6 months, now is the time! Details on our page.

I'm sure that Mike and the other guys will have something to say on these matters, but that is all for now.

A Dark In The Light has officially changed it's name to "Darken The Light".   This new name, centered around a verb rather than a noun, tips a hat to a new era of action and development in the 30-month life of this project.  We are booking solid shows and drawing heads, making new friends left and right, and developing a slew of brutally beautiful new songs.

You can hear two of these new songs on our MySpace, recorded by Kevin at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA during our co-headlining set on July 21st (last week), entitled "Clean Slate" and "Mercy".  The show was a major success, bringing new Darken The Light fans into the fold, re-solidifying tight friendships with our friends in Uncle Lefty and Avariel, and generally getting us pumped about being a Boston metal band.  100 people on a rainy Tuesday night?  Not too shabby, not too shabby at all.

Photographer Ricardo Zapata has come through for us again, working pro-bono to give us great new promo shots, which you can see in our individual photos and our "pics" section.  We will post more of them soon, and will be posting a band photo at the top of this page ASAP.

If you're in the Boston area this coming week and you like quality live rock and roll, come out to OBrien's Pub on Harvard Ave in Allston, MA (Harvard Ave stop on the B line) next Thursday, August 6th.  It's gonna be a GREAT night full of great bands, including our good friends in We Met Aliens, Scourge, and The Under.  WE GO ON AT 9:00, SO GET THERE BY 8:45 AT THE LATEST!!!

Thank you to everyone for the constant support, come see us play near you soon, and remember to support local bands and businesses!

Mike

Hello All,

Seth here just writing this blog because I am excited about how our new demo recordings are coming out so far. Last night Ben layed down bass tracks for two songs. Rob will handle duties on a third new song and we are also likely going to record a new acoustic song that Mike and I wrote, an acoustic version of [at least] one of our old songs (song name to be released), and probably a cover as well. This is all made possible by the ProTools home studio of one Josh Cyran, so we are eager to take advantage.

The only drawback of these new recordings is that they will not capture my true drum stylings. Instead, Josh will tape record my drum parts and transcribe them using some high-tech drum program that I don't even understand. Basically, it will sound like my playing on a much nicer drum set with "machine-like" accuracy. Shhh, do you think we can fool the majors?

Below are the new songs we will be recording:

Mercy
Pie In The Sky
Clean Slate
I Recall
Unannounced acoustic re-make of an album song
Unannounced cover song

STAY TUNED FOR NEW MUSIC SOON!

Ciao,

-Seth

Greetings Earthlings,

So unfortunately, the day we feared was coming has come and the studies of Ben Worden have forced him to take a minimum six-month hiatus from our band. Ben did what he could to stay in Boston, but the poor job market dictates that he must return to his native Maryland until January to pursue his education. We will miss Ben while he is gone and wish him the best of luck in his endeavors. Ben has done alot for the development of our band and for that we are grateful. He has also become a good friend and an overall great guy.

On the bright side, this development has allowed us to re-welcome our former bassist Rob Macleod into the fold. Rob was an extremely valuable member of our band the last time around and we are really excited to jam with him again and continue to develop our sound. For those of you who listen to our recordings, that is Rob's stylings on there, so i'm  sure you are all a fan of his playing already.

We have a full roster of shows lined up for this summer and are also looking forward to writing new material, learning new and awesome cover songs, and smashing YOU in the face at our upcoming gigs.

Stay Classy World. Thanks for stoppin by!

Seth here with another ADIL update:

So after an approximate six month layoff spent trying to solidify a dynamic lineup so that we could reach new heights with this band, we are finally back in the swing of things. We've now played four shows, written three new songs, and expanded on our old tunes, implementing our two-guitar attack. Musically, we are at an all-time high right now and have a confidence in our live performance that we have NEVER felt before. Furthermore, I know i've had a blast hanging out with Mike, Josh and Ben as well as all of our great friends and fans that have come out to show us support. These things are all successes.

Unfortunately, our return couldn't come at a worse time as the struggling economy and the generally low American morale has made it very hard on musicians such as ourselves. Shows that were packed to the gills last year are now struggling to get heads in the door. The cost of renting a vehicle and the uncertainty of getting paid even enough to break even at out-of-town shows has forced me to change the way in which I book gigs. Even the prospect of selling merch is daunting. I've never seen people so excited for a free CD and so tentative to spend $5 to purchase our album. It's understandable, but difficult to swallow for a band that is busting their ass and eating $100 at a time as a result.

Again, THANK YOU TO ALL THE FANS AND FRIENDS WHO HAVE SUPPORTED US, COME TO OUR SHOWS, BOUGHT OUR TEE SHIRT or ALBUM, and SAID NICE THINGS ABOUT US AND WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH!

SHOWS:

We have four more shows lined up as of now and many more in the works...however the two below are our only shows until July.

May 28: Sammy's Patio, Revere, MA - This show is a Battle of the Bands and we REALLY NEED YOU!! Mind you, its on the beach in the middle of summer on a Thursday night, so it's a good excuse to have a good time.

May 29: Tammany Hall, Worcester, MA - This show is Widow Sunday's Record Release and probably the highest profile show we've ever played. We will be opening the night, going on at 9 PM SHARP. If you live anywhere near the Worcester area, please try to make it out and support us!

THEN LOTS OF TIME OFF so don't miss these two shows!

More updates to come soon.

Cheers,

-Seth & ADIL

Well this is Mike McCarthy, one of the founding members and the original asshole of A Dark In The Light (Seth learned everything he knows from me).

So I was told yesterday that my job will be terminated in two weeks.  Ahhhh, yes.  Now I have to spend the summer collecting unemployment and chasing my dreams...ok, actually that doesn't sound that bad.  For real, my plan is to collect the unemployment I deserve, work part-time in the food service industry, and volunteer at area food drives, immigration resource centers, and youth centers at least 15 hours a week, unti I find a way to: 1) Pay basic bills; 2) Eat food that isn't bad for me; 3) Pay my debt (that good old American badge of honor), 4) Help the world around me and GIVE BACK, and 5) Play some music.  Time to grow, time to change, time to take on something new - but never forget where I came from.

On a related note, the A Dark In The Light sound has been advancing.  Both Seth and I have improved our vocals much thanks to ever-increasing knowledge of what we can and can't do.  We're writing parts that work for us.  At the end of the day, we are the ones standing here making this music, and we believe in real people and the real music they make.  This ain't no cookie cutter metal band.  Gone are the days of living the lazy rock and roll life; it's a fight now.  In order to get to even play shows that are solid - nevermind not having to work a day job - it's necessary to work VERY hard.  And that's what we've been doing.  I also quit smoking cigarettes in January and have felt GREAT ever since.  Even the odd toke I can handle, but cigarettes = bad news.  Here's to hoping my Uncle Dave quits, God bless him.

Beyond that, Josh and I have found some balance between our sonic roles in the band, and the fine details of our new and old material alike are coming into focus.  Last weekend in Whitman was a great opening for the new lineup, we sounded better than we ever have before, even in practice recently.  We have another show this weekend in RI, and then we have two next weekend including our 2009 BOSTON DEBUT!  That's gonna be a real good time, and I hope to see some of you out there.

A Dark In The Light is the only thing other than blood that's real in my life any more, more real than EF Educational Tours, Wall Street, Catholicism, and America combined.

Avoid the swine.

Mike

Greetings from the newest incarnation of A Dark In The Light,

So as you may have noticed, the band has been going through some BIG CHANGES lately and we are extremely excited to introduce Josh and Ben into our revamped band lineup! Check out their bios in the blogs below and check back often to see what we are up to in the ADIL camp.

So why all the changes? Basically, Mike and I felt that it was time to add a fourth member to this band to allow us to branch out musically and to augment our live sound (which we found to be lacking in comparison to our newest album). At around the time of this realization, our former bassist, Rob MacLeod decided to leave the band for personal reasons. This left us in quite a conundrum...
After much sadness and worries, we decided to soldier on and became determined to make this band better than ever! The end result was the addition of the two members aforementioned. We believe that their individual skillsets and dedication to the mission of this band will allow us to reach new heights.

NEW SHOWS

As you may have seen, we have four shows scheduled for May. I am also planning a birthday party/concert show somewhere around the 25th of April to celebrate my birth (of course!) and the new lineup. Keep your eyes open for that. Our first Boston area show will be May 8th at McGann's Pub -- and what a way to kick it off but with some of our good friends in Boring Kind of Guy, Wreckoning, and Skulltoboggan. YAYYYY.

NEW SONGS

So far we have written 3 new songs that fully incorporate our new 2-guitar attack. We've molded our signature sound to fit sonically with what two guitars can do and the result is a better-than-ever combination of sounds that we can't wait to unveil. The catch:  you have to come see us live to hear these songs! Not really a catch is it...GET YOUR ASS OUT THERE AND CHECK US OUT LIVE!

Thanks for stoppin' by. Stay Classy...World!

Josh Cyran grew up in the wasteland of Easthampton, MA, generally oblivious to the thriving metal scene that exploded around him.  He began playing guitar at age 12 after discovering the likes of Nirvana, and soon became enamored with the Bay Area thrash of Metallica, Megadeth, and later the almighty Pantera.  He moved to Boston to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he studied under such guitar masters as Jon Finn, Don Lappin, and the Shredlord himself, Joe Stump.  While at Berklee, Josh developed a deep interest in today's modern metal scene, and became influenced by bands such as In Flames, Soilwork, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, and others, while also reaching back to his classic rock roots in the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Queen, Boston, Journey, and more.  He currently lives south of Boston, and is a dedicated user of Schecter guitars and Peavey amps.
