Opening tonight from 6-9pm.. is On Paper By Aida Sabic
"On Paper is a body of work a little different to what I have exhibited in the past. All the work is rendered in lead pencils on paper." A large part of the work is portraiture, focusing on expressions and feelings, including a few figurative pieces as well.
On Paper is officially our last exhibition and we couldn't be more happy that it is by one of our most popular 696 artists. So make sure you pop down and enjoy a beverage on us... for the last time.See you tonight!

Saturn returns, bringing death and rebirth.
Old illusions and patterns are stripped away, and we are left naked in the desert, abandoned by false gods. The works are explorations into a personal Apocalypse playing out against the backdrop of a world that is revealing its strangest secrets. The mystery of ritual, the twisting double helix's of history and dream, and the lust for revolution all dance to the rattling of skeletons bursting from their closets.

Featuring Drawings, Prints, Sculpture, Paintings and the release of a new 48 page comic book 'Saturn Returns'.
Opening tomorrow night Friday the 13th Nov from 6-9pm
Show runs until the 25th
Look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

696 has some Exciting... and Sad news.
On Dec 13th when we close our doors for the year, it will be for the last time.
The last 3 years have been so exciting and such a wonderful experience, that we have enjoyed sharing with you all. But, as all good things must come to an end... the same applies for us.
But before you break out the Andrea Bocelli and start blaring " A time to say Goodbye"... know that, as much as we will be not found at 696 Sydney Rd anymore... you can't get rid of us that easily, as we are not closing without good reason. Over the last couple years we have come to realise where our strengths and weakness' are... and where our passion lies... And that is with the artist. So it is with much excitement that we announce...
We are starting an Artist Representation Agency.
This is a really exciting evolution for us, and to show how happy we are we're having a party!
For those of you still in shock "I Can't Believe it's not 696!" is the opportunity to come and say goodbye to us and a venue that holds so many memories for us all. So make sure you come down on Saturday the 12th Dec from 6-10pm for body painted models, live music and of course art from some of our favorite 696 artists! Although it is all coming to an end make sure you still make it down to our last few shows and really send us off with a bang!

Well it's almost that time again... no, not Christmas... Halloween!
As much as we do understand that we are not in America... the thought of dressing up and running around, looking and being stupid for a night seems to really appeal to our..."creative" sides.
And what better place to do this then at the Insomnia Skate Comp & After party... In it's 6th year, this event is now notorious for being an unforgettable night, and not just because of all the alcohol consumed.

Registration is at 6pm with the Comp kicking off at 7pm... costumes are also mandatory so make sure have fun with it and really get involved.
We'll be catching you at the after party as 696 has a new solo show from the wonderful London based artist Nom Kinnear-King on from 6-9pm... featuring all new paintings FedExed fresh from London, we'll be celebrating our Halloween with Gypsy's, Nymph's and other beautiful women from Nom's Imagination.
Show runs until the 11th Nov.
Currently on at 696 is the amazing show "Telos" a solo show from Brisbane artist Aramas.
A collection of environmentally conscious pieces on reclaimed timber. Exploring the idea of Telos (the end purpose of each thing) in relation to how humans and environment interact. In particular what our end purpose is and the impact it will have on our environment. The pieces are animal focused, frequently assailed by relentless industry, as witnesses and casualty to our greed and selfish desire. Also 5% of sales will be donated to the wilderness society. We have chosen to extend this show until Thursday the 29th to allow more people to experience it's message.

A huge thankyou to all who came down, supported and gave generously to help raise money for CanTeen at this years Get Trucked event... over half the hats were sold although we still have few left that we'd love to go to great homes... the remaining caps are now available at 696, at the low price of $60, with the proceeds still being donated to CanTeen and with the sunshine looking like it's here to stay investing in a one off cap couldn't have come at a better time.
Coming Soon @ 696...

This upcoming week has to be one of the most exciting for the Year!
From Semi-Permanent Melbourne to Get Trucked... make sure your schedule is clear for what Melbourne has in store...
To kick it all off, we are excited to be hosting the latest solo show from this year's Curvy Featured Artist, Kaitlin Beckett...
"A Compendium of Undersea Curiosities...and Friends."

With a unique style, Kaitlin brings to life a collection of curious beasts from the deep (and some landlubber friends).
Be intrigued by the detail, enchanted by the characters and lost in the story... An explosion of fins, masks, tentacles, rockets and hearing trumpets awaits.
This latest body of work features some of the best pieces to date from this talented artist.
Show Opens tonight @ 696 from 6-9pm... And runs until the 11th.
Do yourself a favor and be there!

Get Trucked is here again... and as mentioned we have teamed up with the crew at Per Square Metre, a great range of artists and to top it all off, it's a side to the first Melbourne Semi-Permanent Conference.
For those of you who don't know, Get Trucked is an annual event run by 696 to raise money for CanTeen - The Organisation for Young People Living with Cancer. We ask willing artists to donate their time to decorate a Trucker cap, which is then sold at the exhibition with all proceeds going to the cause.
It's going to be a great night... and what better way to kick off the Semi-P weekend then with a great show for a great organisation.
Show Opens Thursday 8th Oct from 6-9pm @ Per Square Metre
191-193 Johnston st Collingwood

We aren't the only ones lucky enough to be hosting a side event for Semi-permanent... Gorker Gallery will be overcome by song for it's next exhibition "Lyrics and Type".
Wooden Toy Quarterly has invited 17 of the worlds most crafty and creative typographers, illustrators & graphic designers to interpret song lyrics by famous (both past or present) singers, songwriters and bands for a series of artworks combining typographic treatment of words, image and illustration.
Lyrics and Type is a print & zine project designed to celebrate the theme of Wooden Toy Quarterly’s next release, the “Music Edition” (Oct 2009) Featuring limited typographic artist prints and a 40 page Lyrics & Type zine available from the gallery.
Check out www.woodentoyquarterly.com for more details.

... as for the Conference itself tickets are still available, and with the final speakers announced it is shaping up to be one of their best events yet.
Speakers include Jeff Soto (featured above), Tara McPherson, Luke Lucas, and Industrial Light and Magic just to name a few... for full details make sure you check out semipermanent.com. Honestly get yourself an early Xmas present and treat yourself to this experience.
While we have you marking dates on you Calenders, make sure to include -
"Telos" a solo show from Brisbane artist Aramas Ridge.
It doesn't open until Thursday the 15th but won't hurt to pencil it in now.
Hope you're as excited as we are!
And we look forward to sharing the next few nights with you...
See you at a show.
