Piercing After Care

As with all new piercings, the most important part of all, of the after care, is to always wash your hands thoroughly before touching the jewellery or piercing. This is vital for avoiding infections.

Where most people go wrong is that they touch their jewellery without washing their hands first, or spin the jewellery around without cleaning it beforehand. The jewellery can come in contact with dirt from the air, clothes or from bedding.

Hands come in contact with many surfaces that can carry bacteria in a day. This is often the main reason for infection. Also make sure that there is no pressure on the piecing such as tight clothing or any rubbing. This can cause prolonged healing or irritation, which can lead to keloid scaring, migration, rejection or other complications. Wear breathable loose fitting clean clothing throughout the healing phase where possible.

A new piercing is a wound, so you may experience tenderness, swelling, possibly bruising, discoloration, bleeding and itching. Also part of the natural healing phase will include a discharge. This secretion, a yellow-white fluid (which is dead cells, lymph and blood plasma) will dry and form a crust around the piercing and jewellery. This has to be removed properly when cleaning. The piercing may feel healed before healing is complete, this is because piercings heal from the outside first, the inside tissue will still be fragile. Be patient. Keep cleaning your piercing throughout the entire healing phase. Make it part of your normal daily hygiene routine.

Don't leave the jewellery out of your piercing for too long, the piercing can shrink or close within minutes, even well established piercings. This varies from person to person. If you like you're piercing, leave it in.

Avoid cosmetics around and near the piercing, this includes sprays, beauty and care products etc. Don't play with or hang other pieces of jewellery, chains, etc from your new piercing until it is fully healed. Also avoid submerging fresh piercings in lakes, swimming pools, Jacuzzis, etc. Bacteria can be present in most situations, unless you feel confident that the water is clean. Remember that your new piercing is an open wound. You can buy breathable water repellent dressings if you have to submerge yourself. It is safer to shower, bath tubs can harbour bacteria. Clean the bath thoroughly with bleach and rinse before you fill it, you can always run clean water over fresh piercings after you have bathed.

In the event of infection the jewellery should always remain in place to act as a drain for the pus, if the jewellery is removed, the holes will close up. This will result in an abscess. LEAVE YOUR JEWELLERY IN!

The best way to treat and promote healing of an infected piercing is moist heat.

Do not use: Alcohol or Hydrogen Peroxide based products or Ear Care Solutions.

Please be aware every person is unique.

These guidelines are based on a combination of vast professional experience, common sense, research, and extensive clinical practice. This is not to be considered a substitute for medical advice from a doctor. Be aware, however, that many doctors and dentists have no specific training or experience regarding piercing and may not be educated on how to best assist you.

Navel Piercing

When your navel is first pierced, it should initially be fitted with a BCR (ball closure ring) to allow for any swelling. If a bar or banana bar (bananabell) is used, with swelling the bar will become too tight and the piercing will not heal where it is supposed to, with pressure from the bar being tight the holes will work there way towards each other. Once the holes start migrating rejection can soon follow. Or if the bar is too long, (which generally happens after migration starts) the bar can catch or saw itself up and down, which can also cause rejection or at the least prolong the healing leading to other complications.

A BCR will allow for a certain amount of swelling and let the piercing heal properly where it was first pieced. Please leave the ring in for at least 8 weeks or until you're piercing has healed properly, before changing it for a more decorative jewelled bananabell. When choosing a bananabell it should be measured accurately, you may want your body piercer to do this for you and fit it. Something that most of us will do for free! It should be a snug fit with hardly any of the bar being visible, but it should be comfortable and not sore when your body is stretched. Even a well established piercing can cause problems if fitted with incorrect jewellery. For sensitive skin "titanium" jewellery is best.

Whilst the navel piercing is healing, at work or where loose clothing is not possible. A good way to prevent irritation from adhesive in early stages of healing is to wear a hard vented eye patch under tight clothing, (or maybe secured with a stocking). This can also protect from impact during physical activities and contact sports. This can prevent one of the biggest navel piercing problems.

CLEANING YOUR PIERCING

You need to clean the new piercing at least three times a day, especially in the morning, as it will discharge for up to a month or more.

This will also depend on your diet and health, a healthy body heals quicker.

The best way to clean your new piercing is first, thoroughly wash your hands!

Clean away any dried on discharge with warm running water first, use a mild antibacterial colour free cleansing bar if needed, but limit this as some soaps can irritate a new piercing. Use a cup of warm saline solution. Or you can mix 1/2 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt into 1/2 pint of boiled, distilled or bottled water and let it cool until it is warm. Too much salt in the solution can irritate your new piercing. Add some of the solution to a small cup, egg cup or shot glass, hold the cup of saline solution to your piercing and by sealing the top of the cup to your skin by bending over and turning the cup upside down as you stand straight or lay back in a chair etc., immerse your piercing. Once you have immersed the piercing for as long as necessary, 2-10 minutes. Discard the small cup of solution. Clean the piercing and jewellery with cotton buds, by dipping one end of the cotton bud in the saline solution, each end of the cotton bud once only. After you have cleaned the jewellery and the area around your piercing, turn or rotate the jewellery back and forth to remove any discharge that may be inside the piercing and rinse thoroughly with warm water. When you are satisfied the piercing is clean, pat dry with a clean disposable paper towel.

After a week you can also apply some antiseptic skin healing cream after the cleaning process. (Savlon) or (Tea Tree oil) are good, which ever one suits your body best, make sure that it is all rubbed in and that there is no cream or oil left on the piercing or jewellery for any thing to stick to.

You can also add salt to your bath, ovoid strong soaps and perfumes.

Keep you're piercing clean at all times and ovoid any pressure on it, such as tight clothing, belts, chains or any thing that will cause rubbing.

The cleaner you keep the piercing, the sooner it will heal.

Sexual activity can resume as soon as you feel ready in most cases.

Before any activity, make sure the new piercing is cleaned and any crusty matter removed. Comfort and hygiene are vital. Use condoms, dental dams ect, to avoid contact of bodily fluids. Use clean, disposable barriers (antibacterial cling film) on sex toys before use. Use a water based lubricant. Do not use your own saliva as a lubricant. After any sexual activity, give the piercing a clean with either a saline solution or clean water. All genital piercings can bleed for the first few days. Each body is unique and healing times can vary from person to person. If you have any questions or problems, don't hesitate to ask your piercer.

For any other type of piercing, surface etc, the after care can be similar to the body parts of above.

Oral After Care

The Tongue

The best way to clean your new piercing is first, thoroughly wash your hands!

The tongue piercing is initially painless and fairly easy to look after.

When the tongue is first pierced, it is initially fitted with a longer bar than the one that you will end up with; this is to enable room for any swelling that can occur. To keep the swelling to a minimum, relax the tongue as much as possible. Do not play with the jewellery in your mouth, constant clicking can damage teeth and lead to migration, scar tissue and other complications. keeping talking to a minimum, keep off solid food for 3-4 days, eating foods like soup, yoghurt or liquidised food, Nutrient slimming drinks are good as they will fill you up.

The best way to clean your new piercing is first thoroughly wash your hands!

As with most oral piercings, they are initially fitted with a longer bar than the one that you will end up with; this is to enable room for any swelling that can occur.

Keeping the piercing clean entails gargling warm saline solution, (salt water): Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt into an 1/2 pint cup of boiled, distilled or bottled water and let it cool until it is warm. Too much salt in the solution can irritate your new piercing. If for any reason you can't use a saline solution in your mouth try a diluted mouthwash.

For the entire healing period, gargling 3 times a day, after eating and at bedtime helps keep the piercing clean and aids healing.

For the exterior of the piercing, use a small cup of warm saline solution and cotton buds. Clean and remove any discharge that may be inside and around the piercing and jewellery with the cotton buds, by dipping one end of the cotton bud in the saline solution, each end of the cotton bud once only.

Rinse with warm water, do not over clean.

When you are satisfied the piercing is clean, pat dry with a clean disposable paper towel.

Also check the jewellery and make sure that all screw on parts are tight.

After 1-2 weeks when any swelling as subsided, a shorter bar can be fitted.     Also keep off any spicy food for a month.

If swelling becomes too uncomfortable you can suck on something cold like ice, ice cream or a cold drink which can be soothing and will reduce the swelling.

Keeping the piercing clean entails gargling warm saline solution, (salt water): Dissolve 1/2 to 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt into1/2 pint cup of boiled, distilled or bottled water and let it cool until it is warm. Too much salt in the solution can irritate your new piercing. If for any reason you can't use a saline solution in your mouth try a diluted mouthwash.

For the entire healing period, gargling 3 times a day, after eating and at bedtime helps keep the piercing clean and aids healing, do not over clean.

Also check the jewellery and make sure that all screw on parts are tight.

Healing can take up to 2-3 weeks; the first 3-4 days can be the most uncomfortable. When the swelling as subsided, a shorter bar can be fitted.

When finally healed the tongue can be a very enjoyable piercing.

After your tattoo work has been done it will be covered with a dressing, keep the tattooed area covered as directed. Large areas will be covered with an antibacterial cling film which can be left on for up to 5 hours. If it is a small tattoo it will be covered with a disposable kitchen towel, which you should leave on until you get home. This will keep the freshly tattooed work clean and away from any clothing, as it may bleed at first for a short while. Try not to leave the disposable kitchen towel dressing on for more than an hour as this may cause any dried blood to stick to the towel and tattoo. If this does occur, soak the area with cold water until the dressing becomes loose then carefully remove.

When the dressing is removed wash the tattooed area thoroughly to remove any dried on surface blood with warm soapy water (a mild antibacterial colour free cleansing bar is recommended as some soaps may contain irritants). Do not rub the new tattoo with anything when washing it, just gently use your fingers until the area is clean, and then rinse with clean water and gently pat dry with a clean towel or a disposable kitchen towel and let air dry, again do not rub!

Leave the tattoo uncovered, it is best to let the new tattoo breathe and air as much as possible in a clean environment. Though for the first two nights large tattoo areas can still weep a little and leave prints on bedding. Antibacterial cling film can be put over the freshly tattooed area just for the first couple of nights to prevent this.

During the day and at work keep your newly tattooed area clean and dry and away from strong sunlight, dirt, grease or oil and avoid clothes from rubbing, wear loose fitting clothing.

It is possible that swelling or bruising may occur in some circumstances, this is due to the cells in the skin around the healing tattoo area to produce histamine, this will promote inflammation.

The bruising is blood capillaries that can become enlarged to allow for more healing agents in the blood to heal the area, all this can be expected as part of the natural healing process.

For any excessive swelling, use cold compresses and an anti-histamine cream, swelling will go between 1-2 weeks.

You need to wash your new tattoo at least three times a day but do not over soak, like swimming or bathing too long, taking a steam bath or sauna, until your tattoo has healed.

After 2 or more days the tattoo will start to dry and a light scab will form, this is normal. Do Not Pick The Tattoo Also avoid the rubbing of clothes, let the dead skin / scab full off naturally.

Colours may seem lighter as the new skin forms but will return to there natural shade as the tattoo heals.

To aid the healing at this time Apply Savlon Antiseptic Cream twice daily after washing the tattoo. You can also use Bepanthen nappy care ointment, applying every few hours after your tattoo has been cleand for the first time, as this can help prevent the form of scabbing. Do not apply to much cream as this could lead to the scab coming off before its ready and also taking the pigment off the colour with it, using the right amount off cream will leave the healing tattoo soft to the touch and dry, not crispy. Depending on where your tattoo is excusive exercise can cause the scab to split, and leaving un-pigmented scar tissue. You can also, use E45 lotion if you have any reactions too theses creams then stop using them straight away and consult your tattooist. Keep your tattoo clean and away from strong sunlight, as this can cause the healing tattoo to dry and burn making the old skin flaking off before the new skin is ready leaving the new tattoo unprotected, which at the least can lead to fading or the loss of colour. Also keep your new tattoo clean and away from dirt, grease or oil. Do not use Vaseline or Petroleum. With improper care you healing tattoo could get infected due to dirt causing it to swell and become very sore, if this happens you must clean it, as said above, or antibiotics which should clear up any infection, but because of the infection the tattoo will almost certainly appear faint and patchy when healed, to avoid this look after you tattoo.

Remember that a tattoo is like an open wound and has to heal, this is the most crucial part of your tattoos life after it has been done, look after it. Improper care will result in loss of part or, your entire tattoo.

Healing time can be from 4 days to 2 weeks.

You can sunbathe once your tattoo has healed, but always in moderation, and always use a sun block that has both UVA and UVB protection in it.

Yo Ho Ho You All,

Salty Sea Dogs And Swabs Alike Not Forgetting You Buxom Wenches!

Well if you aint guessed by now, I'm a Tattoo and a Body Piercing Artist who thinks he's a pirate with a passion for tractors, motor bikes, Jack Daniel's, rock 'n' roll and most things old. I can also play the didgeridoo, to a degree.  I have two lads, who mean more to me than anything. Max who's 18 and Gus who's 17. They both live in Deal, Kent.

Well that's been me for the last, nearly thirty years. I have always been artistic and have been drawing pictures of all sorts of things since a very early age, I also spent a lot of time on farms, so when I wasn't helping out on the dairy farm chasing cows about, hay making, the odd bit of shooting or playing about with the tractors, I was to be found drawing. Horses, cows, tractors, the farm house and other farm buildings, nothing was safe. All the way through school life too, I showed more flair to art than any other subject. I used to draw on friends tattoos with felt pens, then they use to go out with there sleeves rolled up, and if it rained the tattoos would run down to there fingers. I got my first tattoos from Ian Frost in Croydon. Later on in life I met some one who used to tattoo down on the coast and I was to join him, but it didn't really get off the ground, maybe just as well as I wanted to learn a bit more than how to tattoo harts and swallows. Some time later after more tattoos I came across a young lad who had just started tattooing in his spare time, This persons art work was more promising, we started a friendship and I helped him when he went full time. His name was Danny Fuller, we both learnt a lot in them early years. Apart from attending many tattoo conventions and meeting other artists, we would also visit other tattoo studios. There was always something to learn from older and wiser tattooist. One of these tattooists was a young Barry Louvaine, who had a studio in Garrett Lane, Earlsfield, London. I first met Barry at a Rock 'n' Roll weekender where he was the resident tattooist, after a short introduction I found myself doing the odd drawing and making up transfers for him. I learnt a lot from Barry over the years I new him. Most of it was over a pint or two. Sadly he is no longer with us.

After spending about five years working together with Danny, I then went on to running and working my own studios over the next twenty years or more.

I have had a PC in my current shop for almost four years now, with the amount of times I've broken them I have at least learnt a bit more about them. I have pretty much mastered PaintShop Pro, Word and Excel, can surf the net, shuffle pictures and folders around, open and send email and download stuff, whether I wanted to or not. I'm a bit new to this Myspace stuff, but I'm getting there, even if it does take me into the early hours, most nights.

Hope you enjoy the slide shows of some of my work, the videos and my pictures.

So yo ho for now and laterzz

Think first before you choose your tattoo; a tattoo is forever! Don't get the same as your friends or family, choose what you want and you will be happy with it for the rest of your life. Have a bit of individuality. We get fed up doing the old style bulldogs, union jacks and football badges. Michaelangelo didn't have to put up with it!

For legal reasons, children or babies are not allowed in the studio or waiting room.

You will not be tattooed or pierced if you have been drinking, or are under the influence of any drugs, it is against the law.

If you have any medical conditions please let us know, before undergoing a piercing or tattoo. (example haemophilia, epilepsy, diabetes, any heart conditions, or if you are at any stage of a pregnancy).

Try not to be nervous, if you feel faint or think you are going to be sick, please let the piercer or tattooist know. It is easier to work on a relaxed person.

Eat something before you have a piercing or tattoo, make sure you do the eating elsewhere, this is not a café. Food and drink are not allowed on the premises.

There is also a no smoking policy, but there is an ashtray out side the entrance.

To keep prices down, we do not take cheques or credit cards, we only take cash.

Vouchers with an expiry date can be purchased, please give notice.

Mobile phones should be turned off, while the tattoo/piercing is being done, as they can distract concentration of the artist and can cause you to move.

Clothing is important, wearing light coloured clothes, is not sensible, as you may get ink on them, brand new clothes also isn't a very good idea. Wear loose fitting clothing and make sure that the area you want tattooed or pierced can easily be exposed.

Do not be embarrassed, we have seen it all, time after time. Skin is skin!

Personal hygiene is very important: The Tattooist/piercer will refuse to work on you if you are unclean, smell, unwell or have any infectious diseases.

It's not fair on the tattooist/piercer, or the next customer in the chair.

If you are off work because you have a cold, stay at home! Don't use the time to get tattooed or pierced, we don't want your cold, or any thing else that may ail you!

If you look under age for your first tattoo, you will need to bring photographic ID.

We accept passports, driving licence, official ID cards.

We will not accept the following in any circumstances college cards, birth certificates, or the word of a parent or guardian. Do not turn up with all your mates, you would not do so at the doctors, don't do it here!

If you are, considering having any writing, e.g. names and dates, make sure you know the correct dates and spelling of any words that you want.

We have a wide range of fonts and shading styles to choose from if the writing is to be of substantial size.

If you want a large custom piece of work that will take some time to prepare, don't expect the work to be all done that day, if any at all. The tattooist may be busy with a waiting room full of customers, but do come and talk to us about it and arrangements can be made. We are constantly working on large pieces of work that our customers are

coming back for repetitive sittings on, which also helps the healing of larger tattoos.
