Colin Gawel and the Lonely Bones have breaking news concerning their upcoming show September 11th at Rumba Café.

Drummer Dave Masica had emergency back surgery last week and will be unable to perform with the band that evening. Filling in on the skins for the 11th and the following Friday in ....Cleveland.... will be original Watershed drummer Herb Schupp.

“Our best wishes go out to Dave and his family as he struggles to recover from emergency surgery to repair a slipped disc in his back which caused him to lose the use of his legs and suffer extreme discomfort. Sadly, the problem could have been addressed earlier, but in a story that is all too common, Dave’s insurance company declined advice of doctors to have surgery earlier in the summer and opted for a less costly treatment of painkillers citing Dave’s relative youth and good health as reasons for putting off the procedure. Less than a month later he was in a hospital emergency room and now faces a grueling recovery. A prognosis is good for a full recovery. An ironic development considering the subject matter on our latest CD “Chemotherapy”

Herb Schupp, who performed in Watershed before Dave and played on both the Twister and Star Vehicle CDs, is furiously learning the material and we are doing our best to get things up to, or close to speed by Sept. 11th.”-Colin Gawel

-The latest Colin Gawel single, “Chemotherapy” is starting to show up on radio programmer’s playlists and blogs dialoging about health care reform as that debate takes center stage this fall.

Advance tickets for Colin Gawel and the Lonely Bones will be available starting this Friday September 4th at Colin’s Coffee and Ace in the Hole Records. Tickets are only $8.00 and come with a copy of Colin’s latest CD “Chemotherapy” at the time of purchase.

Colin Gawel Notes 4/05/09

.. ..

It’s 5:30 pm and I am sitting in the East Bay Meeting House Bar and Café in ....Charleston.., ..S.C..... The large front windows are open onto ....East Bat Street.... letting the cool, misty sea air easily float in from the ....Cooper.. ..River.... which is only one block away. We have a gig on ....Mt... ..Pleasant.... tonight so I am drinking a large iced coffee before meeting up with the guys for an 8 p.m. sound check.

.. ..

The combination of not-so-great weather and Watershed’s “professionalism for the sake of professionalism” work ethos are making it surprisingly easy for me to not miss sitting on the rooftop bar of the Vendue Inn which is but a half of block away. Sipping beers watching the sun set over ....Charleston.... harbor, surrounded by Church Steeples stabbing the thick Southern air is as good a reason as you will find to play rock n roll.

.. ..

Call it mortality creeping in, but it hurts to only have 2 ½ hours of free time to walk the streets of one of my three favorite cities (Chicago, Marquette, MI are the other two for those of you keeping score at home) Not to sound morbid, but you never know when is the last time that you will see your favorite place, or face for that matter. As usual, I work to frame this in a positive light and work hard to burn images into my brain for long-term reference.

.. ..

This trip has been more travel than I bargained for, but it is always fun to hang out with the guys. I laugh more in one day on the road than I do in two weeks at home.

.. ..

.. ..

2 am- lobby of hotel staring at ....Ashley.. ..River..... Village Tavern was a cool place. Owner was determined to get us drinking and he succeeded. “Come on man, Irish Car Bombs just taste like Chocolate milk” “yeah, chocolate milk full of booze” We played “Can’t Be Myself” on the jukebox twice before we went on and then opened with it which I thought was a nice touch.

.. ..

Dave and I convinced a woman that we needed her help to throw Pooch out of the band and that we had bought him a bus ticket home. She grabbed him and pointed at us and yelled “those guys are NOT your friends!” at which point Dave replied right on cue, “Great show tonight Pooch”.

.. ..

Random:

Shows in ..Raleigh.., ..Myrtle Beach.. and Todd Bakers B-Day in ....Athens.... all were rocking. As was the KISS coffee shop (though in a “I understand why most the world wants to attack us” sort of way). The Travelodge in ....Athens.... was one of the 5 worst hotels we have ever stayed in. (including motor lodges which are actually kind of quaint)

I went 30 hours without spending any money until breaking down for a turkey burger in ....Myrtle Beach..... This includes a stop at “South of the Border” which makes it much more impressive. In fairness if the Mc Donald’s across from the hotel in ....Raleigh.... would have been open at 3 am, I would have wrecked a quarter pounder w/cheese, but it wasn’t so, I didn’t. streak intact. Hello.. Free hotel breakfast ++ my backpack for extra meals. Hanging out with the guys on the beach after the M. beach show is always fun for us land-locked Buckeyes.

Dear Editor:

Question: What content can the Columbus Dispatch deliver that isn’t found in the U.S.A. Today, on cable news, or on major news websites?

Answer: Coverage of Central Ohio musical events.

Be it Elton John at Nationwide or the Hoodoo Soul Band at the Rumba Café, Columbus is teaming with live music. If you totaled attendance at musical events in the city over a year’s time, I suspect it would be comparable to the number of people who attend sporting events in the same period.

Columbus is part of a small fraternity of cities containing both a major university and a state capital (e.g. Austin, Raleigh, Madison, and Minneapolis/St. Paul). As in these other “creative-class” cities, a disproportionate number of young people live in Columbus. There is an equally large network of thriving venues, promoters, and radio stations. The daily papers in these other markets realized long ago that providing extensive concert coverage was a service they could uniquely provide. They also knew they’d reach desirable younger readers in the process. Yet the Dispatch has steadily decreased music coverage, and now, to make matters irrevocably worse, it has laid off its talented pop music critic, Aaron Beck. This is exactly the wrong direction.

In my small coffee shop, I can state unequivocally that the question, “What’s going on this weekend? Is anyone good playing?” comes up on a daily basis. We once looked to the Dispatch for answers. Not anymore.

I know that many big city dailies are in financial trouble. But by abandoning its music coverage (content that provides an important cultural and community service with only minimal investment), I fear the Dispatch is only hastening its extinction. As a former Dispatch paperboy and a person who’d rather skip breakfast than the morning paper, I hope I am wrong.

New shows, friends. New shows.

March Madness: On 3/28 Watershed will play Skully's in Columbus, and the setlist will be designed by you. How? We'll start with field of 64 Watershed songs. Then via fan vote, the field will be trimmed down to the sweet sixteen. The band will then play these sixteen songs (plus a few more) at Skully's. Brackets will be available for downloading soon.

The March to the Sea: The first week of April, Watershed will be making a Sherman-style march (with slightly less raping and pillaging, of course), down to the Southest, a part of the country that has been historically good to the band. Dates in Raleigh and Athens, GA are posted now, and gigs in Myrtle Beach and Charleston (or Charlotte) will be announced soon.

Forage Liberally,
Watershed
