Yowzers,

Two more local shows this week in Brisbane:

Wednesday 18/11: Rosie's w/ Cohagen Quaid.

Cohagen Quaid are good friends of ours and a $&*W$ amazing and unique alternative heavy rock band. Their singer Dan fractured his foot a while ago and was performing on crutches the last time we saw them. Despite this he still put the 'man' in frontman haha. A great live band.

Saturday 21/11: MALLRATS PARTY at GPO Hotel w/ The Liars Chair, Stature::Statue and Moon Jog.

Hmmmm this should be a very loose night haha. GPO might seem a strange place to do live rock, but we've played there a few times now and it's a blast. Free entry downstairs (where the bands are), cheap cocktails and VRB's. The Liars Chair list pull influences from some artists I fucking love (Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes) and are therfore awesome. Period. Stature::Statue are also manically good. Can't wait to play with these guys for the first time, having heard/seem them quite a bit.

FINALLY! We just locked in our VERY LAST show for the year... And a rather fitting one at that...
We're again making the trip out to Goondiwindi to play the infamous SNAKE PIT! With our friends and Gundy locals Weaponhead. I can't express how fucking good these gigs are. The snake pit is basically a big dark room with a low ceiling and a long bar, and Weaponhead bring in a HUGE sound system for the night through their contacts. The place packs out with hundreds of people and it's just sweaty, rock'n'roll magic. Goondiwindi may technically be a regional city, but these gig's go off as much as our shows in Brisbane.

Also joining us at The Snake Pit are another band we've had the pleasure of playing with several times- The amazing Project 62 from Toowoomba. These guys are genuinely talented. I can't pin their sound as they are one of these bands that can write amazing songs but don't restrict themselves to one style or sound. That said, their is definitely a strong identity to their band and their music, and what they do is 100% authentic.

And of course, Weaponhead are an absolutely stonking band. To quote Julian whilst watching them last Saturday at 388, 'Wow... this is fucking TOUGH'. A pretty good summation. Uncompromising shit. Their music empowers you whilst you’re being pulverised- best experienced live.

This is certainly a bit of a busy time of year for us! Which is all the better considering that we'll be taking a well deserved break from shows at the very start of the year which coincides with some of us popping our heads overseas for a bit (seeing the world, expanding our minds, looking for the meaning behind it all, exploring new cliches and making the best of the old ones, etc etc). Playing live is what we love best, so as good as the break will be we'll be itching to get back into it as soon as humanly possible.

SO! Brisbanites, make sure you check out our last couple of shows for the year, and anyone in South-West Queensland, be in Gundy for the night of Friday 18th December.

Sunflower out

Wow,

200andfarking9 where has this year gone?

We have a bunch of shows coming up in the last part of the year in sleepy (wakey) Brisbane, including a showcase at 2High Festival (Brisbane Powerhouse, Friday 13 & 14 November) and some sweet unplugged shows at the GPO Hotel...

HOWEVER.

We're quite excited about Saturday 14 November at 388 (last time we played at 388 was with Mammal, and it was a $*%^$W cracker), a show that we've put in the hard yards organising ourselves.

We've prepared a feast for the ears. Practically a mini-festival in fact...

6 of our favourite rock bands over 6 hours. We're even bringing in 2 out of town specials: Weaponhead (all the way from Goondiwindi) and Project 62 (Toowoomba). These guys hail from out west, and we've had the pleasure of playing with them on several occaisions (keep an eye out for our video account of the all night gig/road trip to Gundy we'll have up soon). They're both absolutely shatteringly awesome live, as well as being great blokes generally (Can party...). We love their music and have been looking for an excuse to bring them to the river city for a show for sometime, so here it is.

We're also stoked to have the local bad boys from 1989 smashing it up with us, along with the Eden and Run For A Bus.

The event is being sponsored by Tooheys Extra Dry and Tooheys 5 Seeds, so we're sparing no expense to bring you the whole glorious line-up with a huge sound system- thes ame one that Mammal had when we supported them. This things is festival size LOUD!

AND ALL THIS FOR $5 on A SATURDAY NIGHT???
(It's also the last day of Uni exams for Queensland univirsities- PARTY!)

So don't even think about it

Saturday 14 November
Bar 388 baby (Brunswick st. Valley)
Upstairs
Big room. Huge sound. Epic lineup.
8pm - 2am

Sunflower, 1989, Project 62, Weaponhead, Eden, Run For A Bus.

Press Release:

Sunflower ‘sleep out’ for CityCare Street Sleep, and perform at Hope For Our Homeless Valley Fiesta 2009

Brisbane Band Sunflower will spend a night sleeping on the streets this month to raise funds and awareness about homelessness in Brisbane.

Organised by charity group CityCare, the Street Sleep initiative will see the members of Sunflower along with community volunteers weathering a night on Alfred street in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, just a walking distance from where the band will take the stage on the following day for their Valley Fiesta performance.

"The Valley is the hub of live music in Brisbane, but barely a street away from many of the venues there are people living on the streets struggling day to day” vocalist David Flynn said.

"Homelessness is an issue which I think we overlook, accepting it as part of our inner-city landscape. Hopefully by taking part in Street Sleep we can walk in the shoes of Brisbane's forgotten residents and raise awareness about the less fortunate in our city."

Saturday 24th October see’s Sunflower performing alongside a slew of other talented local and interstate artists including Skinny Jean, Skipping Girl Vinegar, Hunz and Montpelier at the Hope For Our Homeless event, which will also boast street markets with indigenous art, fashions from local designers and food stalls along with the opportunity to learn more about CityCare and it’s mission of ‘restoring hope to broken lives’.

Street Sleep intends to raise funds through sponsorship, and also highlight the plight of Brisbane’s homeless population by bringing home the hardship and vulnerability of street living through a first-hand experience.

Sponsorship for Street Sleep can be directed to www.hopeforourhomeless.com, or donations to CityCare can be made directly at the Hope For Our Homeless event.

In conjunction with Valley Fiesta 2009, the Hope For Our Homeless takes place on Alfred  Street, Fortitude Valley on Saturday 24 October between 12pm and 10:30pm, with Sunflower hitting the stage at 3:30pm.

Yowza! We're through to the State Finals of the National Campus Band Competition. Thanks to everyone who checked us out last night at 2nd Degree Bar (UQ). I really need to remember to bring my own (wreckable) mic stands to gigs...

The State Final is this Saturday! Again at 2nd Degree Bar (UQ St. Lucia). Don't know what time we're on yet, but it will be before 10pm, as (you may already know) we have ANOTHER big show that night also. We're also playing at the EMERGENZA semi-final at The Hi-FI (West End) at midnight.

Both of these shows on Saturday represent good opportunities for us, so if you'd like to kill 2 birds with one stone (see us wreck ourselves + support a good cause haha) get along to either the 2nd Degree Bar or The Hi-Fi late.

Gig details on www.bandsunflower.com.

You need tickets to the Hi-Fi show (argh!!! Buy pre-sale it's much cheaper!) but we've got an awesome deal with free cd's/tee's for those who purchse in advance - http://www.sunflower.bigcartel.com/.

See you over the weekend kids.

-Dave

PS. Anybody been to the big-sound gigs that have been on? We had some passes and went out after our show last night- Farking sick. Awesome stuff happening everywhere. Saw The Middle East at Family. If only Brisbane was like that every going out night....
