"Shipley Garners DVD Deal, Contemplates Next Act

By Mark R. Smith, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Wayne Shipley took a gamble in 2007 and it was a whopper: He plunked about $100,000 of his own money into making his dream of producing an independent feature come true.
The movie, a western then called "One-Eyed Horse," was shot on various locations, primarily in the Corridor, notably on Shipley Farm in Jessup and nearby Blob's Park. It premiered on July 22 of last year at The Diamond Cinemas........."

January 21, 2009

Interview with Richard Cutting (Creed Logan, One-Eyed Horse)

1. Are you a fan of Westerns, and what is your favorite Western film ?

I am more of a film noir fan, but I've always liked the laconic heros in the great Westerns. They can be very noir-like sometimes. I guess The Searchers is a favorite, and Wayne Shipley turned me on to Will Penny where Heston does such a great job playing the gruff loner. Glenn Ford's pretty creepy and fun in the original 3:10 To Yuma too. . .

2. How did your involvement in One-Eyed Horse come about ?

Wayne had been doing some test shooting for the film for about six months or so, and I think I first read for it around then. I was shooting a few other films at the time, and I figured that if I didn't hear from him as the weather turned to summer, that he'd fully cast the film. As June of 2007 rolled around I got a call from him asking if I'd want to do the role of Creed, a part I hadn't read for. He liked my prior read, and just cast me without my reading for Creed, which was a very flattering act of confidence in me. I was happy to do it, as Creed is a manipulative baddy and a well-written part. I started "cowboy camp" later that week and we began shooting in the fall.

3. How much did you know about cowboys and the West when you began working on One-Eyed Horse ?

Let me start by saying I was born in New York City, and while I could tell which end of a horse you didn't want to stand near, I didn't know a halter from a handsaw. I had to learn all that stuff from scratch. It was a lot of fun. You can imagine piling up your desk every night with cowboy books, Western stuff and the lore of the range - it was like being a kid again. Gave me great respect for the men and women who settled our country and eked it out on the fringe of nature often in violent confrontation with each other and nature. I knew I was hooked when I looked up one day and found myself idling over a webpage selling Colt Single Action Army revolvers. When you get around cowboy and Wild West lovers its quite an infectious thing. The Single-Action Shooter people are a whole lot of fun.

4. What was Creed Logan, your character about, how did you find this character ?

We've all met guys like Creed before. Hard done by. Feels the world owes him something. Not that he's not willing to work for it, but that he should probably get all the marbles for any work he does do. And not one to let ethics impede his progress. A hard realist, his eyes glaze over when Gatewood waxes honorable about dispatching Curry. Creed is all business. He wants the girl and to take over Gatewood Freight. If Gatewood would let him shoot Curry in the back and dump the body, Logan would be all for it. He is a Iago, a very capable lieutenant who easily rationalizes heinous acts to get what he wants. But his obvious ruthlessness undercuts any benefits his loyalty actually accrues. No one fully trusts him. He is self-defeating and at some level he knows it. Never quite able to genteel-up his ambitions. His insecurities don't let him escape this neurotic cycle. Its lethal for him in the end.

Richard Cutting as "Creed Logan" with
                Kelly Potchak as "Catherine Curry"

5. How did you like riding horses for the film ?

You put a dime in the thing and they rock back and forth. That was my previous experience with horses. Which was nada. So Wayne's wife Patty took us into the riding ring every Monday night and patiently gave us the basics. Then we'd head up to the farm house, another area of the set, and Cowboy Bob would put us on another horse and tell us, "Hell son, just get out there and ride 'em !" Afterwards, Patty would cook a great meal for what seemed like a hundred people, and that was what we called "Cowboy Camp." I have spoken with many One-Eyed Horse alumni, and everybody misses cowboy camp. That kind of fun is usually very expensive or illegal.

With the horseback riding, I was dressed for it, so mostly I faked it until it felt more natural. But in the end I liked it. I never got to the point of believing I could know what a horse was thinking, or would do next, like a lot of people who ride all the time seem to do. Horses still seem like big dogs to me. I'd like to keep up with riding. Its a very primeval thing. Satisfying.

Again, to think of your horse as your primary means of transportation while you're trying to get all your other stuff done in the wilds of the West still blows my mind. Those frontier people were awesome.

6. Was there a particularly funny moment on the set of One-Eyed Horse ?

Funny ? Hmmm, well there was one freaky moment that was kind of funny after the fact, yes. One day Wayne Fletcher, the Armorer for the film, came to set with a box full of six shooters. And of course we all wanted in on a few rounds because they are such a kick to shoot. So Wayne sets up a big tree stump as a target and we all step up one-by-one to try and hit it from 75 feet or so. We were horrible shots, but the smoke and bang was a gas. These were live rounds of course.

Well, one of us, I forget who, took his turn, and as he took the weapon from Wayne, he did one of those twirl it around your finger numbers. It was insane - everyone immediately ducked for cover and scattered. Because those triggers are much more sensitive than they seem and that twirly thing can actually very easily discharge the weapon. I was next and I was amazed at how only the slightest pressure to the trigger made it go off. We all just looked around and kind of smiled after that. Very respectful of the Single Action.

 7. How did you like working with Wayne Shipley and the other actors on One-Eyed Horse ?

Wayne Shipley is a very intelligent and likable guy who has a special skill of putting everyone at ease no matter what he is asking them to do. HIs wife Patty is marvelous and patient. They set the tone, and this was a great set.

We had all kinds of people in the cast and crew. Lawyers, teachers and real rodeo guys, to classically-trained actors, IT people, real estate salesmen and musicians. So together Wayne had gathered this eclectic band of nuts and made a really good Western shot almost completely in Maryland with an all local area cast. I loved working on this picture. Mark Redfield is a joy to act with because he gives you a lot to work off of in a scene, and Jennifer Rouse brings a smoldering something to her work that really plays in this film.

..

..

Mark Redfield as "Justin Gatewood"
with Richard Cutting as "Creed Logan"

Jennifer Rouse as "Helen Gatewood"
with Richard Cutting as "Creed Logan"

Often people would hang around after work and talk movies, talk shop, eat Patty's hot dogs and corn bread and generally fool around. It was a great work environment. This is one of those sets where you will find people who will stay in touch for life because of the experience.

Wayne makes it look easy. A smart Studio producer should give him lots of money to do another one. No one knows the Western like Wayne. He's a very steady hand.

"One-Eyed Horse" is a classic western tale of obsession and revenge.
"Hadley, Missouri, 1887. Justin Gatewood (Mark Redfield) has recently been released from prison for attempting to kill an old adversary, William Curry (Mike Hagan). Twenty-five years earlier, Gatewood and his brother were Confederate prisoners-of-war, and the death of Gatewood's brother under the watch of (then) Union Officer Curry has consumed Gatewood and fueled his desire for revenge. Free from jail, Gatewood discovers that Hadley and his world is changed, and that a "new order" of law and prosperity is now the battle cry of the people. His daughter, Helen (Jennifer Rouse) has grown his business into a thriving concern and she makes her father promise that he'll forget his past vendetta. Curry has a successful business and willful daughter of his own (Kelly Potchak), and his main concern is for her safety, once it becomes known that Gatewood still wants him dead. As Justin Gatewood methodically hatches his plan for Curry's utter destruction, the entire town is caught in the crossfire, but most tragically, so are the daughters of both men."

Report: The Mason Dixon Stampede SASS Regional Championship, Thurmont, MD

by Jennifer Rouse

Thursday October 2 through Sunday October 4, 2008 marked the 7th annual Mason Dixon Stampede presented by The Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) and the Thurmont Rangers at the Thurmont Conservation and Sportsman's Club in western Maryland. The Mason Dixon Stampede, is the official SASS Northeast Regional Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting and also the SASS Northeast Regional Championship of Mounted Cowboy action shooting.

A few actors and members of the production team from the most recent film I'm in, the western drama "One-Eyed Horse", headed out to Thurmont, MD on Wednesday morning to promote the film, watch some matches, and have a good time with friends.

When we announced the filming of "One-Eyed Horse" a while back, Chuck Crooks (alias "Chuckaroo") sent out a notice to mid-atlantic region SASS members about the film. Wayne Shipley, the writer/director, got an enormous response from members who always dreamed of being in a western and were excited to come out to be background players and lend their expertise on everything from the guns themselves, to the clothing, to the entire lifestyle of the Old West. I made friends with a lot of really nice people who are members of SASS while we were filming.

I joined SASS about a year ago at this very same event in Thurmont, MD. You have to pick an original name for yourself for the group so my alias is "Lady Gunfighter". I couldn't believe it wasn't already taken when I registered it!

Wednesday was basically a load in day but there were shooting matches scheduled for some of the members who were volunteering to help run the event. The Thurmont Conservation and Sportsman's club is located on a wonderful piece of land in a valley of the mountains of western Maryland. People came from all over the east coast and many of them camped out on the grounds themselves. There were about 6 shooting stages, a horse mounted Cowboy Action Shooting ring, and a "main street" of vendors with everything from western attire, food, custom leather goods, to guns and ammunition.

After setting up the "One-Eyed Horse" tent, I went to the hotel to check in for the weekend. The first room I had, had a television set that seemed to be haunted. I was watching something and then all of a sudden it started to change channels by itself. Then it started turning on and off by itself. Oy! It was probably a short of some kind but I couldn't deal with that all weekend so I was able to change rooms, thank God.

I didn't get much sleep on Wednesday night because I was excited for the weekend, but I managed to get a few hours in before the official opening of the SASS Northeast Regional on Thursday October 2nd.  I was kind-of strapped to the table with fellow "One-Eyed Horse" actor Mark Redfield and producer Bill Blewett for most of the day but we were visited by a bunch of our new friends who were competing and had worked on the film. They were very helpful throughout the weekend spreading the word about us and getting people interested in seeing the movie. The day went well and after barely being able to hold my eyes open for the vice-presidential debate on Thursday night I got to bed around 9:30 (which is early for me).

On Friday, I had a little bit of time to break away from the "One-Eyed Horse" tent and watch some of the shooting competitions. I took Mark Redfield's video camera and filmed "The Mill Creek Wranglers" , Annapolis, Maryland's posse, shoot on one of the stages. How a stage works is, there are about 8 to 10 targets shaped like bad guys and things like that, each one at different distances from the shooter. The shooter is given a scenario, a pattern, to shoot with their pistols, rifle, and shotgun and the time it takes them to do it is recorded. Who ever has the fastest time on all of the stages wins the regional championship in their category. There are a bunch of different categories, everything from "Classic Cowboy", to "Gunfighter", to "B-Western" which are also broken down between age groups.  The categories are pretty much based on the guns the shooter uses and there is a requirement to wear certain things for certain categories.
Watching "The Mill Creek Wranglers" shoot was a blast. I know a lot of people in that club and they really have a good time while maintaining the competitive spirit.

On Friday evening, after the SASS events wound down, Mark Redfield and I went to Hagerstown, MD where "One-Eyed Horse" is showing until Thursday October 9th on the big screen at the Diamond Cinemas to sign some autographs and chat with viewers. Everyone seemed to like the film and had a bunch of questions for us.

On Saturday, along with the regular competitions, was the Mounted Shooting competition. That was a lot of fun to watch. Horse mounted shooters are timed and have to ride along an obstacle course and shoot targets. I was able to film one of the matches so hopefully I'll be able to cut together a video of it, along with the ground shooting competitions soon to post on Youtube. There was a very nice man named Karl who competes as well as trains mounted shooters. He has a place in New Jersey, just outside of New York City where he's trained celebrities such as Janet Jackson, Dan Akroyd, and Aiden Quinn. He offered to help a few of us from the film out, including director Wayne Shipley who also took an interest, with combining our shooting skills with our horse riding skills.

On Sunday, the final round of ground and mounted shooting took place followed by the awards ceremony in the late afternoon. Everyone gathered in the pavilion, located on the Thurmont Conservation and Sportsman's Club grounds, to hear "Chuckaroo" give out the awards plaques and belt buckles to the champions of the weekend's events. The part that I think I liked the best was the awards to the "junior" members (under 16 years of age). It's fun to see that there are young people involved with the sport. One of the awards went to a girl who looked to be about 8 years old. If I saw her on the street I would have never thought that she was a champion shooter.

I headed for home into the sunset on Sunday evening. The weekend was a success for "One-Eyed Horse" and I had a lot of fun mingling with the crowd for 4 days at the Mason Dixon Stampede. I'd like to thank Chuck Crooks, "Chuckaroo", for hosting it and being so gracious throughout the weekend, and I'd like to thank the SASS members who were in "One-Eyed Horse" for helping to spread the word about the film.

Until next year!
