hello friends.

we've been getting some pretty crazy messages lately that seem deeply conerned about us. thank you for that love and concern and i apologize u haven't heard a peep out of us for a couple of months.

for starters: my mother has become VERY ill and I am in winnipeg, manitoba, canada helping her. ALOT. it's extremely heavy and sad (and beautiful) but I'll take the responsibility for not keeping our fans/friends better informed.

guinevere is also going through a very painful experience (and is not in l.a.) that she cannot talk about. i shouldn't even be bringing it up so please do NOT bring it up with her. thx....

the Distants are still working on the be your shadow EP...we had to take a couple of months off but almost all the tracking is done and it's just a matter of mixing it, mastering, and seeing if u dig the new direction (where 'Broken Gold' leaves off)... i'm going to give it the full blown stragazer lilly treatment...

The songs on the EP are: HIGHWAYS, LUMINOL, BE YOUR SHADOW, CHEMICAL BURN, and LET'S CATCH FIRE.

we hope to have 'let's catch' up here in about a month to 6 weeks.

It is with bittersweet emotion that the Distants announce our parting of ways with bass player Steve Alderfer. Steve has been with us for approximately 3 years and has proven himself to be a talented musician and an all around great guy. Steve coined the name 'the Distants', and was responsible for helping us pen such 'Distants classics' as 'Falling Apart', 'February', and 'the Following' among others. Through Steve we made countless friends, fans and life long artistic companions. Nicknamed 'Captain Bizzystick' during an early Distants recording session his deep tone and a knack for being able to choose just the right quality of notes to serve Distants material made his bass playing both thunderous AND delicate. Thanks Steve! WE wish you all the best in all of your endeavors both musical and non musical alike!

We are also very pleased to announce that taking Steve's place for the coming months will be the multi-talented instrumentalist Shiben Bhattacharian. Shiben recently moved to Los Angeles from Austin, Texas and has played with such notable names as Ozomatli, Roy Hargrove, Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter (of the Doobie Brothers), the Geto Boys, Galactic, John Popper (Blues Traveler), Leroy, St. James Inc., The Northstar Session, BoomBox ATX, DJ SUN, MC Overlord, D-Madness, Atash, Oliver Rajamani, Groove Line Horns, etc… (need we say more?) Wow!! We're stoked to have Shiben on board. You can visit his profile at Shiben Thx Shiben! I've had a few late night jam sessions with Mr. Bhattacharian and I must say he is one of the most talented musicians I've had the honor of playing with in LA! But by all means come to the gigs and hear it for yourself!!

and pay attention to. Brittany?

"I have some news I thought you might want to know.
You may or may not remember my dear friend Mark Obayashi. I brought him to one of your Canter's Gigs maybe a couple years back and he absolutely adored you guys. You met him breifly--he's a big-smiled asian guy with a mohawk. Hard to miss.

I regret to inform you all that he has passed away from a heroin overdose. It happened this February (no pun intended) in San Francisco and he hadn't hit his twenty-first birthday yet. I thought you guys should know and I ask that you have him in your prayers.

Just another reminder that life is precious and we aren't invincible, and that this town has a habit of eating its youth. We are all lucky to be alive and well."

NO. 8 - The Distants "Broken Gold" (Blue Cave Records) .. If members of the Cocteau Twins, Sonic Youth and Jane's Addiction teamed to record an album in 2006, it might well sound like the Distants' "Broken Gold." The Los Angeles quartet is able to mix up ethereal moodiness with driving modern rock across the 10-song disc, which also includes a winning cover of the Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary."
