Hey Everyone!
Lately, many beginner DJs have been contacting me with the same question, "how do I grow [or simply get started]?" These are guys and girls dreaming of landing more gigs, itching to perform in front of a few more people. It's a great question, let's get into it!
Below are 5 tips for landing more gigs and building a fan base:
1) Participate in your local nightlife scene
-Many people sit home complaining about "not getting a chance". Hang out in your local house scene. This is a great way to meet event organizers and like minded people who love house music. You can build industry contacts & make new friends (aka potential fans).

2) Update your MySpace/Facebook profiles
-Your profiles should not be dusty, update them with new pictures, new news, new tracks, new blog posts like this one, etc. Whether your fan base is 1 or 1 million, fans need to know that there's something exciting and new whenever they visit your pages.

3) Build a following by organizing events
-If you are completely unknown, throw a small party for a few friends and spin there. If you're slightly bigger, talk to local event organizers and nightclubs about throwing an event. This may seem like a no brainer, but time and time again I see DJs failing because of their lack of communication with their fans, or simply no desire to build a following. Club owners and promoters only book those of us who can attract a fan base; this is simply entertainment business common sense.
4) Find ways to mobilize your fans
-There isn't one right way to mobilize your fans, there are many. Some DJs use the social networks, others have e-mail lists, some have cell phone lists, and some combine all 3 and more. The important thing to realize is that your fans (and potential fans) need to be informed about when you're performing.

5) Be nice to everyone
-Door guys, bar tenders, organizers, fans, etc. It's amazing how many missed opportunities there are for people who get a reputation for being jerks.

Your Thoughts?
That's what I've got for now. What do other DJs/Producers out there think about the list above? Do you have other suggestions? Be sure to add your suggestions in the comments section below. If this topic does pretty well, I may write a second blog post with thoughts about expanding beyond your local city. Be sure to add your 2 cents in the comments section.
