Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to take this time and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I know it's still a little early, but I just wanted to get it out of the way lol. Mainly, I wanted to fill you all in on our new youtube page. We now have over 50 videos up including footage from our Virginia Beach road trip this past summer, and a show we did up in Bloomfield, NJ this past Fall. Just follow the link below. The Virginia Beach footage has a lot of pre and post inteviews, candid shots, funny moments, antics we got into, and of course songs from the performances. So, please check them all out on youtube and leave feedback for us. We'd love to hear what you think of them all! We'll be adding more videos when we can, so we'll keep you posted on it. Anyway, we hope you, your family, and friends have a safe holiday season! Enjoy the vids!

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to offically fill you in that we now have a new keyboardist in the band. I have gone to bass (sporting my Hofner), and the band sounds better than ever. Our new keyboardist Chris Sabol, has studied the keys for years and really knows how to make it vibe.  He adds the extra emphasis we needed, and the future is looking good so far! Don't forget to check out the new pics P. Magnum took of us in Central Park, featuring Chris of course.  Hope you can make it out to a show soon to meet the new chap! This winter break we're headed back into the studio to put down some new tunes, and we can't wait for you guys to hear them!

talk to ya soon!

Hello to all our friends and fans!! We hope your summer is going good so far!! Ours is going pretty good. We just played a couple good gigs last weekend. One at the Colts Neck Inn, which was our debut show at that venue. It was right down the street from my house, so it was pretty convenient for me lol. The second gig we had was a private party in Hamilton, NJ. I actually played my Hofner bass at that show since Paul was unable to attend.

With that in mind, EJ, Ken, and I would like to officially announce Paul's departure from The Backbeat. We had a lot of good times and made some fond memories during his year with the band. He will be missed, but of course we will be going on full speed ahead.  And till we find a replacement bassist, I will be heading up that job, and we will be playing as a rockin' three- piece. We have done a few gigs in the past with just the three of us, and I assure you we still sound just as great!!

Hope to see you at some shows this summer, and don't forget to drop us a line!!

Category: Music

It's finally here guys! Here's the transcript of the interview I did with the wonderful Vinny Rugnetta of The Backbeat!

Melissa- How did you get started into music?

Vinny-  I got started into music pretty much by my parents. They were always playing music when I was growing up. I was always hearing the Beatles and oldies, and Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. I really took to the Beatles in my style, even though I love Frank. I started playing the trumpet and piano when I was nine, and then went to the guitar when I was twelve. I first wanted to play the bass and not the guitar because Paul Mccartney played bass in the Beatles, but my parents talked me into playing the guitar first, and they were right in doing that because it really worked out for the better for me in helping create my own music and style.

Melissa- Personally, who are your musical influences?

Vinny-  My musical influences are of course The Beatles. They are really the reason why I wanted to play music. I just love everything about them. I also like Dave Matthews, Oasis, Donovan, Chris Isaak, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, Pink Flyod, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, and pretty much all 60's music, and whatever catches my ear or I can relate too.

Melissa- How did it feel to be nominated for the Best Pop Band at the 2007 Asbury Awards?

Vinny- It was pretty cool seeing that we were nominated for best pop band at this year's Asbury Park Music Awards. I remember going to the show last year, and thought it would be cool to win or to be nominated. And we were this year! I thought, if we got nominated it would be EJ for best guitarist. I didn't think the whole band would get nominated yet, but we were. It's nice getting a little recognition.

Melissa-  What's your favorite part about performing live?

Vinny-   My favorite part about performing live is definitely the people. Getting seen by new people and gaining new fans is great. Having our friends come out to our shows, and support us definitely helps a lot. We owe it all to them. Seeing them come up to the stage, and sing and dance along to our songs, the songs that we wrote, that's the tops. Just being able to play for people and see their smiles is great. We even gave out a couple of autographs at our last show, which made my night.

Melissa-  What's your favorite song to perform live?

Vinny- I love playing all our songs. Especially "Don't Move On" and "Just So You Know" but my favorite song to perform live is definitely "Someone Like You." It's our closer when we perform, and it's going to be the closing song on our debut album as well. The people really get into it. It's got great music and lyrics. EJ and I do killer harmonies on it in the chorus of the song. Of couse, the end of the song might be what really makes it. EJ goes out and shows off his talent in the amazing closing solo which caps off the song just right. We all just blend great on it. The song just wouldn't be the same if we all didn't give it our best. "Someone Like You" or "SLY" is just that type of song that hits people in a certain way.

Melissa- Any embarassing experiences on stage?

Vinny-  Yeah, some embarrasing things on stage that have happend is when I might mess up on a chord or lyrics from time to time. One time I forgot where we were in "Don't Move On" and threw everyone off, but we recovered lol. At the last show the cord fell out of my guitar and I was "really" acoustic for a couple of seconds. Mess ups don't happen too often, but the crowd just laughs along with us when they do.

Melissa- Musically, The Backbeat has been compared to music legends, The Beatles. How does that make you feel?

Vinny-  Being compared to the Beatles is definitely an honor. If you're going to be compared with anyone, you hope it's the Beatles. They are the best. And when you're compared with the best that's pretty cool. But we also want to be known for us. When people hear us I want them to say "that's The Backbeat!" I would like us to be our own entity, but for now I'll settle with being compared with the best band in history lol.

Melissa- How did The Backbeat get together?

Vinny-  Well, EJ and I met when I was about 15 yrs old, and he was twelve. He was in a band with my younger brother called Waters Edge. I was in a different band myself called Jade Fire. Then, I quit that band, and joined the one my brother and EJ were in. I left Waters Edge when I was 17 yrs old, and EJ and I didn't really speak for almost a year. Then, we both happend to be playing at this gig the following summer, and by the end of the night we were playing together, and we have ever since.

Ken is a cousin of a musician we know around the scene named Don Lee. I was doing a solo spot at Don Lee's recent CD release party, and Ken was there playing as well. He saw my set, and really liked my tunes. I contacted him on myspace, and he met up with us at our studio to see if we would jell. He liked it, and he joined.

Melissa- What can your fans expect from your album due out in the next couple months?

Vinny-  From our debut album coming out soon our fans can expect songs that they have heard seeing us live along with ones they haven't heard before or hear rarely. Many times when we play short original gigs our set is only about 30-45min long, and we play most of the fast songs to keep the pace moving and people dancing. "Where Are You" and "Clearer Day" are two songs that are examples of that. They are wonderful tunes that don't get played often because of their slower tempo and length. There are also two beatiful acoustic songs on the album that EJ amd I did seperatley. His is called "Highway 33" and mine is called "With You." Fans are definitely in for a treat when they hear those two.

Melissa- What is your favorite song off the album?

Vinny- I love ALL the songs off the album equally. I never have to skip a song. That's why I think we're different than most bands. Everyone has a different favorite song of ours. We try not to write throw aways. We try to make every song a catchy feel good or feel melancholy tune people want to hear because they can relate to it.

Melissa- What was your inspiration for writing the song "Girl from Montreal"?

Vinny- Many people ask me about "Girl From Montreal." I love Montreal. I have been there a few times in my life, and I think it is a great city. It's very beautiful. Last time I was there I sort of got this tune in my head. When I came back home, I wrote the song. This was about four years ago now. It's my homage to any girl from Montreal. They are just different from the girls here. I'm not saying I don't like the girls from here, I love them, but girls from Montreal's attitudes are more in the way that they want the same things as you so why should we waste our time playing games. As for if there was any specific girl I wrote it about, that will have to remain a mystery.

Melissa- What do you like to do when you're not writing or playing music?

Vinny- When I'm not writing or playing music I'm either working, studying, at school, or hanging with friends. I go to the movies a lot. I go out to eat with friends. I like going out to see other bands. I love watching Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. I love the Yankees, and I hope for the best next year.

Melissa-  Vinny, thanks so much for talking with me!

Vinny- Thank you for this interview Melissa, thank you to everyone who read it, and I hope everyone who read it, enjoyed it!!

So there you have it folks! Keep checking back for more updates!

Peace, Love, & Rock-n-Roll,

Melissa

Hey thanks to P. Magnum (the best photographer in the world) we have some new really kick ass pics up of the band. Yesterday we were walking in the rain in downtown Freehold, and decided to take a few while we were at it. It rained pretty hard, but that inspired us to take a couple cool shots we might not have taken. All in all, we got drenched, but the pics came out pretty sweet. Just have a look for yourself. Check out our galleries and the two new slide shows on our page!!!

On Aug. 3rd we played at the Stone Pony with our good friends Status Green. Paolo got some sweet live shots of us on stage. Even Lou popped up to join in on the fun. All the bands played killer sets that night. Thanks to all our family, friends, and fans for coming out to see us. We'll be playing with Status Green again at the Andy Hampel Cancer Benefit on Sunday Sept. 9th at the Stone Pony. We hope you all can make it out to support this really important cause.

Setlist from 8/3/07 at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park

Just So You Know>>Don't Move On, Girl of My Dreams, Just Like This, Definitely Baby, Without A Gleam, Girl From Montreal, Fish to Fry, Somone Like You, Twist and Shout (featuring Lou Montesano on backing vocals)

By now most of you may know that Eric and Kurt Loegel are no longer with The Backbeat. Due to creative, irreconcilable differences the four of us could not work together anymore. EJ and I wish the best for Kurt and Eric in their music, and in their lives.  They are very talented musicians, which no one can take away.  We had lots of fun playing with them, and it was a great ride.  May they have success in all of their endeavors, and may they be blessed with a bright future.

The new recordings you hear on our myspace, and the album will still feature Kurt and Eric Loegel as they were still with the band when we finished the drum and bass tracks of the album.

But EJ and I would like to welcome Paul Coraggio as the new, talanted, and versatile bass player of  The Backbeat. We are looking forward to what hopes to be a new, long, and prosperous relationship.  Paul made his official live debut as the bass player of The Backbeat at the Internet Cafe in Red Bank, NJ this past June 15th. The show went great, and was tons of fun. Thanks to everyone for coming, and supporting the important cause that we were playing for that night.

We would also like to welcome Ken Masson as the new drummer of The Backbeat. He has fun fills and a solid beat that add that nice touch back to The Backbeat. Ken used to be the drummer of the popular NJ funk band Red- Headed Boogie Child. He was also a freelance drummer, and has played with major recording artist, Joss Stone on ocassions. His seniority and experience will surely help The Backbeat move up in their professionalism as a band.

Thanks for stopping by and remember to keep checking back to our page for updates!!

thank you,

~Vinny Rugnetta

We'll, there was once again another full, all- out weekend for The Backbeat. This past Friday we got the filming done for our video for "Definitely Baby." The filming was a long and tiring process. We finished filming it at Monmouth Academy of Musical Arts after closing at 9:00pm. We went until 3:00am shooting the different shots we needed for the video. This time around we had a special guest star in the video. Our friend Christa plays the object of attraction. She's muy caliente lol.  Troy once again did a great job coming up with the different scenes with directing us in his vision for the project. We can't wait to see how the finished product comes out!!

On Saturday Vinny and EJ played an acoustic show at their old stomping ground the Cornerstone Caffe in Freehold. The crowd was great and we had a fun time playing our originals and covers. Thank you to Don Lee for showing up and playing during our break. We really enjoy seeing him play. It was fun having him up for the finale, singing the harmonies on "Twist and Shout" with us!! Also, we had another surprise guest come up. Our drummer Kurt Loegel came up and did an "interesing" job singing "I am the Highway" lol. We'd like to thank Cole and Eric for having us. We always love playing there.

Finally, on Sunday we played at the Jersey Shows Battle of the Bands at the Court Tavern in New Brunswick.  It was the first round out of five. We went on last and played one of our finest shows. Kurt finally got a new drum set and show cased for the first time. It looks beautiful and sounds great. It is a cherry birch wood Gretch set. It is very classy. We opened the show with "Just Like This."  then, we went into a real speedy version of "Definitely Baby," followed by "Don't Move On," then came "Girl From Montreal," follwed by "Fish To Fry," then "Just So You Know," and we closed with "Someone Like You."  We came in first out of the three bands scoring a 48.5/50!! We would just like to congratulate the other two bands for moving on as well. We have to thank all our family and friends for coming out and supporting us all the time. Without you we wouldn't have won. We hope to see you all and more at the next round on April 15th. Same place, and I believe same time. We'll keep you posted.

Don't forget to keep checking our myspace for updates!!

Have a good one!!

Thank you,

The Backbeat
