Sportys needs help in finding the politically correct, sensitive, and those with no sense of humor to be led to Sporty's sacrificial alter. If you know the type, those who suck at living, pass us a note and we'll sacrifice them in effigy.

If you are offended by this message, you are the type we seek.

This is the blog site from The Best Bar in America, this is what they've been up to getting ready for their big day.... Enjoy the read, photos, and short videos, I stole them all just for you.....scroll to the bottom to read from beginning to end, unless you like reading from the back of the book forward.... :)

Thank you Damon and Eric Ristau, Loni Workman and Tex, Andrew Rizzo, and David Ackroyd for including Sportsmans bar in your most incredible journey!

Over the last couple of months, since wrapping production, we've been holed
up editing like madmen. Eric has set up his editing HQ in a converted
woodshed up on Blue Mountain, and my post production digs are in my
garage behind my house. This has been a long winter, but very
productive indeed. Watching the film come together is quite possibly
the most rewarding part of this entire process. Post is also MUCH less
stressful than actual production. There are no more impossible
logistics to pull off, no last minute preproduction and extras casting,
no actors to direct , no waiting for the weather to change and no more
Wild Turkey (thank God)! We have completed around 2/3 of the film and
are very happy with what we are seeing and we're hoping to complete the
rough cut by mid-March. We have also been working with a small group of
wildly talented musicians who are creating a wicked soundtrack that
will undoubtedly blow your mind.

Lights! Camera! Ackroyd!

David
Ackroyd, who plays the wise old character "Northway" in the film,
recently dedicated his weekly two-hour internet radio show, "Lights, Camera, Ackroyd,"
to his latest experience on the set of "The Best Bar in America." You
can listen to his hilarious and detailed behind-the-scenes account of
independent guerrilla filmmaking at its finest.

Montana Mermaids

Photos by Loni Workman and John Ansotegui.
We recently returned from the famous Sip N Dip Lounge in Great Falls,
Montana. Even though we talked to a ton of people about this place and
were aware that GQ Magazine rated it as the #1 Bar in the world,
nothing could quite prepare us for what we experienced. We shot for two
days in the lounge, starting at 6 am and ending in the early afternoon.
The wonderful management at the O'Haire Motor Inn (where the lounge is
located) let us film in the bar outside business hours. Tim Huffman,
(who plays a cowboy bartender in the beginning of the film) rented us
SCUBA gear and built a giant bubbler out of PVC pipe and a scuba tank.
Using our underwater housing, Eric recorded some amazing footage of our
mermaids.

The Sip N Dip is an authentic tiki bar will bamboo
walls and ceiling, the house drink is a blue-colored fish bowl that
contains something like 10 shots of booze. Most evenings Piano Pat
comes out and plays classic hits from the likes of Johnny Cash and Neil
Diamond.

Here's the kicker. Behind the bar are two large windows
that look underwater into the swimming pool. At 9pm the mermaids appear
and the place gets packed, everyone drinking blue drinks, laughing and
dancing to Piano Pat's tunes. Several key scenes in the film
happen at the Sip N Dip. Including the meeting of two the film's main
characters: Sanders and Eden.

Check out the pics and youtube mermaid montage.

Jim Harrison!

Photos by Loni Workman

We
recently returned from shooting a scene at the Old Saloon in Paradise
Valley, Montana where legendary author and poet, Jim Harrison (Legends
of the Fall, Dalva, Saving Daylight, etc.), met us for a cameo in the
film. Harrison's general view on life, combined with his love for the
land, the drink and the road, fall in line with many of our personal
sentiments. In our limited encounters with Jim, he has been quite
supportive of the project. During our last meeting with him over many
drinks in Salt Lake City, Eric and I pitched him the idea. We also
somehow convinced him it would be a good idea for him to appear in the
film. Harrison appears near the very end of the film so you'll have to
watch it in its entirety to hear his joke, laugh and profound wisdom.
On
the set, we were also very pleased to be joined by the great author and
activist Doug Peacock, as well as Dennis Sizemore, Executive Director
of Round River Conservation.

Production: The First Month

Wow. What a long strange trip this has already been. We've only been shooting our film, The Best Bar in America
for less than a month or so, but time has become a meaningless blur.
We've clocked nearly 6000 miles throughout Arizona, Utah, Idaho and
Montana. We've shot 500 gigs of amazing footage, witnessed countless
sunrises and sunsets. We've visited a fantastic variety of dirty
saloons, rowdy bars, smokey taverns and crowded pubs. We've drained an
easy dozen bottles of "prop" Wild Turkey 101 and gallons of cheap
American brew. We've laughed, cried, fought and puked together. We've
handled scorpions and rattlesnakes, dug a grave, stole a sheriff's
truck, fired guns and have met more good people than I thought existed
in the entire world.

On a quiet Monday afternoon, as a small crowd made conversation over the sounds of a pool game and back round music, all eyes turned towards the front door as it swung open and a mask clad female shouted something similar to "Boogie Woogie woogie" and bared her breasts before turning and making a very quick exit. The identity of a walk in flasher is unknown, but, a positive identity of the breasts in question are etched in the witness's minds.

Management is willing provide a free drink or two to those of female persuasion who partake in this type of behavior.

The moral of this story: One never knows what is going to happen at Sportys, even a quiet Monday afternoon may provide an interesting surprise!

That's right, anyone one who knows us knows that beyond anything, we are jokesters. We never had any intentions of changing the name of our beloved
bar. Two years ago we plastered the bar with sale signs on the first weekend  of April and have been hard pressed to top that joke.

That people were outspoken and passionate against the name change was a great compliment to Tammy and myself and tell us what a great clientel frequents Sportys.

A personal shout out to Guido for a great job in passing the petition around the community to stir up the hostile feelings towards the irrevient owners that are bound to bring the devil to Alberton

Oh and to our detractors, please don't be childish and rip down the April fools banner. We know that girls in sport's bras offend your sense of morality because after all, bras are more dangerous to children than the town's meth problem.

Here is a letter from the respectable elderly people of Alberton, Mt. They addressed it to John and Tammy Zunski (Sportsmans owners) after the PIMP and HO party....
Enjoy! (We did after we got over the shock in the hate of the elderly.. lol)

"We the Senior citizens who've lived in our little town for 50 (and up)
years find your sign "Welcome pimps and hos" offensive. I believe that
parents of young children will also find it offensive. However if you
really think that calling people denigrating names is the way to appeal
to potential customers you are neglecting whole classes of people...

You have your Spicks and Micks and Dagos and Wops,
Your Hunkies and Junkies and "pigs" (for cops)
There are Bucks and Squaws, slant-eyes and Frogs
Your Red-necks and Polaks and female Dogs
You've got Chinks and Finks and Pansies and Dykes
Niggers and Limeys and don't forget the Kikes,
There are Greasers and Japs and the German Kraut,
Just so you didnt leave anyone out...

Why not have an all-inclusive sign "Welcome Scum of the earth, this is your
home away from home" Better yet how about a really family- friendly
sign. "Welcome friends and neighbors!""

Soooo,, what do ya think, are they doing our job for us?  Nothing like a good controversy to get some free publicity.. lol
