It is a shame when a band like Brothers goes unnoticed. This five-piece outfit hails from Michigan and Black Friday is their debut offering. The album is filled with eleven hardcore songs just begging for you to sing-along to.
The opening combo of "Beginnings" and "The War at Home" kick things off with fast-paced hardcore akin to Comeback Kid and Verse. From here the band experiments with their sound, infusing it with dramatic build-ups and progressive riffing that brought to mind Modern Life is War and Life Long Tragedy. "Never Again" revisits the more aggressive sound with chunky riffs and gritty vocals. From here on out its more modern hardcore with plenty of sing-alongs.
Brothers truly shines in the lyrics of vocalist Joel; he speaks directly on a multitude of topics - social issues, personal demons, relationships, and the lack of sincerity in today's underground scene. Even better, included with the lyrics are brief song-meanings that provide further insight into his words. I love when bands do this.
Black Friday is a record that I honestly feel deserves so much more attention. Take it upon yourself to pick this record up. Brothers is one of the best new bands I've come across; make them one of yours too!

Michigan's Brothers has offered up a pleasant surprise to the hardcore world with their debut release, Black Friday. Best described as an energetic blend of the melodic hardcore of Champion and earlier Comeback Kid, Brothers nails nearly all of the elements (catchy leads, memorable riffs, and plenty of gang vocals) required for a solid, upbeat hardcore.
The disc opens with a short intro of the words, "Everything's falling apart, but I'm putting those days behind me / This is where it begins," before diving into the Hope Conspiracy-esque sonic build of "War at Home." There aren't many surprises over the course of Black Friday, yet relatively predictable song structures and common hardcore elements prove to be acceptable due to the record's overwhelmingly catchy sound. "So Sincere" explores a songwriting style more akin to the slower work of Modern Life is War, and as a result, could feel right at home in the middle of Witness. The minute-long "Hand of Judgment" excels on a foundation of driving drumming, fast riffing and a well-placed closing breakdown. Listeners willing to accept that this record has no intentions of revolutionizing hardcore will find plenty of great melodic moments to enjoy.
However, it's the band's lacking lyrical content that prevents the album from being categorized as exceptional. Typical hardcore elements are one thing to stomach, but much of the lyrics might be too clichéd for some listeners. It isn't really necessary to hack Brothers' lyrical content to death, but the closing lines of "Is Anyone Listening?" provide a pretty accurate representation of what can be expected: "We're through with screaming. We're taking our hearts back. When? Now! Right now!"
Hell, it's been a long time since I've paid any real attention to lyrics within the hardcore and metal community, so the abundance of upbeat hardcore moments here is more than enough to secure this disc a good number of spins. But for listeners who value lyrical content and can't handle trite hardcore topics, then Brothers might not be a good fit.
Bottom Line: Brothers' debut release is chock-full of extremely catchy melodic hardcore elements, and should appeal to fans of Champion, earlier Comeback Kid and other similar posi-core bands. Lyrical content that falls on the clichéd side of hardcore might be a turn off for some, but overall, it's a pretty impressive start for Brothers.
