Very unfortunate to have lost two great ones this past weekend...R.I.P. to Bernie Mac & Isaac Hayes...started going through & listening to his catalog and decided to press record...though this is an impromptu chapter for the SAMPLOLOGY Series, if there's anyone that deserves to have one created it would be Mr. Isaac Hayes...his countless contributions to music & film helped lay the groundwork for Hip Hop, R&B, Disco, Funk & more...

Go-Go music is Washington D.C.'s own home grown staple music form.  It was first started in 1966 by the "Godfather of Go-Go", Chuck Brown. Chuck, as he is affectionately called by his legion of fans, combined Afro/Latin percussion, jazz improvisation, Afrikan call and response, and hard funk energy over a continuous drumbeat to create a new non-stop live dance musical form.

The basic beat that drives all Go-Go is the beat from "Mr. Magic" by Grover Washington Jr. however depending on the particular band this rhythmic foundation can be taken in a multitude of directions. Chuck Brown's music has heavy jazz and blues influences, Rare Essence, R&B influences, E.U. has rock influences, Trouble Funk, funk influences and Backyard Band has a heavy hip-hop influence. But the key to Go-Go is the Beat and the live energy provided by the interaction of the crowd and the band.

Go-Go music is 3 dimensional and to truly hear it, know it and love it you have to go to a Go-Go and experience it in its true live raw form.

I was responding to my boy Dul's blog (http://www.myspace.com/dullydul88) about Down South Rap music and the current state of Hip Hop.  The responses started leaning towards why Down South & Midwest suck, real Hip Hop, Where's NY at?, Etc...Guess I got into a talkative mood, so I'm sharing my response with yall...

"The state of music today is more a reflection of bullshit corporate interest and manipulation.  All these Down South and Midwest rappers were around during the golden era 90s...but no one was giving them airplay or paying them any mind...all it takes now is a check and "synergy" between the powers-that-be to create this formulaic playdough (pardon the pun) rap

Hip Hop is on life support, Hip Pop is alive and well.  I dont care where you're from as long as your music has integrity; Mos Def, Dr Dre, Snoop, Scarface, Outkast, Common, Jay-Z...all different, but successful because it was good music that was created by individuals via their own principles.  A major problem is that we hustle Hip Hop (a cultural movement) as if it were a drug, that's why everyone's running around saying the Rap game is like the Crack game---well Crack is bad, its bad people, it makes few rich, but leaves most broke, F'd up, incarcerated or dead.  As a result, you have a slew of artists trying to be and say things they aren't, just to live up to these fabricated images.  No more sheep!  I'm sick of sheep, follow your own spirit, do you.  When the money goes, then Hip Hop will return to its formative state---this isnt about mainstream vs underground or East vs West vs Down South, it's about quality control and respect for a music, for a people, for a culture.  They put our music out there like any dispensable product with no regard, following trends, and simulating the competitors product.  We've lost the balance in music.

There's a bigger issue at hand for my people because Hip Hop is the current form of pop music (like glam rock in the 80s, and disco in the 70s, to which music purists were against as well during their respective eras).  But it's also a form of Black Music, which has helped reinforce the inaccurate one-sided images ingrained in societys psyche of African American culture.  That is why some people are soooo confused when they meet a normal multi dimensional brother or sister---"Wait a damn minute Malik!  Let me get this straight---you went to college AND you're down, you live in Harlem AND wear a suit, you speak slang AND proper English---dude call Ripley's" (one of the reason people couldnt understand the complexities and contradictions in 2Pacs music---ummm because he was a human being, not just a MC, not just a thug, not just a son, not just an aggressor, not just a victim)

Hip Hop will never die, and when the popularity phases out and these Forbes 500 companies no longer find it a viable marketing tool, we'll begin to see artists who create music for the sake of creating music

And for the rest of the Mantans & Sleep-N-Eats...cut that shit out!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Just got back from Paris, France...Hip Hop is on fire out there!  They have mad love for Hip Hop & Reggae but also have local talent with serious beats |& rhymes.  Too bad I had to leave today, Raekwon is performing tomorrow and I know it'll be a hot show.

Shout out to all the new people and crews that I met, the good food in the 1st district and the good looks on the kicks.  Special shout to Tmaxx (the hottest music shop) for carrying my mixtapes...

"They in love like the 14th of February, Play 'em like April 1st right before I slide off, It could be March 2nd, sound like July 4th" (Cam'Ron- The ROC)

"And who the cap fit, let them wear it!" (Bob Marley-Who the Cap Fit)

"Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time."  (Bob Marley-Redemption Song)

"It's bigger than hip hop...You would rather have a lexus, some justice, a dream or some substance?
A beamer, a necklace or freedom?"  (Dead Prez- Hip Hop)
