Many people have this band's widely acclaimed debut album that featured Michael Romeo guitar prodigy of Symphony X, Coleman "Colie" Brice on lead vocals from Gemini, NJ drumming legend Bob Nelson, Eric Walz,on bass, and the Phantom founder Jack Young - who started the band in 1969! Alec Jon Such from Bon Jovi appears on this album as well (Alec & Tico were in PHANTOM's OPERA before the joined Bon Jovi).
What people don't know is that the band whent on to record THREE more albums & counting. 1997's "So Long To Broadway" featured Karl Cochran on lead guitar (stints with Ace Frehley, Joe Lynn Turner, Arcara, Sebastian Bach). SLTB had great tunes but the production quality was lacking. After nailing a deal with Victor/JVC of Japan the band was finally able to produce a stunning, major label quality recording that was co produced by famed engineer/producer Steve Evetts @ NJ's legendary TRAX EAST and mastered by GRAMMY winner Joe Palmaccio at Sterling Sound.. They also brought on yet ANOTHER guitar player - Bob Gilmartin (The ROSENBERGS, MYSTERY BLOOM, & currently NEW MACHINE). The result?
A powerful addendum to the vernacular of Rock & Roll history. . . Rarely does a band produce an album where sound quality, performance quality, and songwriting/music composition ALL come together. These guys did it! It's all there. It's a monster album that rocks, has soul, depth & MAGNITUDE! Following Dreams has a mesmerizing , cohesive quality that engulfs serious listeners from start to finish. It is an aural epitome of contrasts - jubilant and somber, bombastic & delicate, Colie Brice rages with a plethora of intense, emotions that live up to his nick name of "the Chameleon", Nelson pounds like Bonham in one moment & the technical finesse of Peart in another, Gilmartin slices through & more than holds his own in an intimidating gig for lesser men, Walz in the lineman of this band, the steady hand that balances the EXTREMES of Jack & Colie's grappling yet harmonizinng polarities. There are obvious credence given to the Beatles , Led Zep & Queen, but the distuinguised listener will here hints of Rush, the Allman Brothers, the Stones, Styx & other classic rock icons. Yet there is an ethereal, dramatic, ghastly, melancholy, almost gothic tinge that is uniquely their own. AERIA Records on iLike - Add iLike to your MySpace

JAMES DALTON has a strong, classic singer-songwriter voice, in the way he sings, the way in writes, and the posture he projects on “Butterflies and Passerbys” (aeriarcords.com). His structure, while being “classic” is hardly formulaic, thankfully, which makes this an easy listen. Sometimes he treads on Greg Brown territory (meant positively), but mostly he covers his material with freshness, right from the start, with “Kiss of the Dark Haired Girl,” straight through to the end. There is even a blues thrown in, with “Alafaya Mama.” One of my fave cuts is “Wednesday Night Mass,” soaring through people’s lives. A one-man band (writes, plays), Dalton keeps it simple, exposing as much as is needed, rather than everything he has, which makes for a cleaner, clearer recording.

There is a certain irony pertaining to the release of Joe Harvard's Country Eastern on AERIA Records.
For those who didn't know, Joe Harvard is the scrappy kid from East Boston who actually attended Harvard University and earned a degree in archeology and then went on to become an architect and forefather of the legendary Boston's indie rock scene that inspired and influenced none less than the late, great Kurt Cobain. While working with musicians from bands such as the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Mission of Burma, Throwing Muses, Billy Bragg and many others through his production efforts at the legendary Fort Apache recording studio as well as pioneering live musical events at the highly esteemed Middle East rock club, Joe Harvard was the eye in the storm of Boston's virile alternative rock movement throughout the 80's and 90's.
Unfortunately, despite being an in demand session player, engineer and prolific songwriter himself, Joe's own artistic vision was seriously waylaid by a crippling heroin addiction. As a consequence, his debut album, recorded at Fort Apache lay dormant and ended up sitting in a vault for nearly a quarter of a century.
Relocating to Asbury Park, NJ several years ago, Joe got a fresh start in Bruce Springsteen's fabled city by the sea working with upcoming regional artists such as Agency, Rick Barry and Mark Prescott as a sideman, being a sound engineer at local clubs such as the esteemed Wonder Bar, and actively writing, recording and performing live again as a solo artist. During this time, he also authored the widely acclaimed The Velvet Underground and Nico 33 1/3 Vol. 11.
To go forward, Joe soon realized that he would need to fall upon his academic background and embark upon another archeological expedition.. Himself!
Country Eastern was recorded back in Fort Apache's glory days, with a cast that includes Howie Ferguson [Real Kids, Barrence Whitfield & the Savages], Billy Conway & the late Mark Sandman [Treat Her Right, Morphine], Jim Fitting [Treat Her Right, The The, Coots], Jerome Deupree [Joe Morris, Bourbon Princess, Morphine, Either-Orchestra], Sebastian Steinberg [Cibo Mato, Syd Straw, Soul Coughing], Marylou Lord, Florence Dore [Mudsills], Brother Cleve of the Church of the Subgenius [Del Fuegos, Combustible Edison], Paul Brown [Gtr. Player Mag Best Unsigned Guitarist], Bob Pernice [Pernice Brothers], Gary Smith [Lifeboat, Philosopher Kings], Bob and Greg Kendall [Lifeboat, Tackle Box] and a lot of other great players from Boston and Columbus – not to mention engineering by soon-to-be-hugesters Paul Q. Kolderie, Sean Slade, Tim O'Heir and Lou Giordano.
Life itself is only comprised of play, fast forward and ultimately stop. Yet music, through technology allows us to rewind, to go back and unearth what we left behind, so we can ultimately move forward.
With a title implying both a genre and a philosophical precept, the release of Country Eastern is a giant step forward for Joe Harvard.
