Amplifires ready to rock town jointby TIM FLETCHERAN INDIE-rock outfit featuring a Burton charity boss on guitar bring the sound they have just showcased to American audiences to the town this weekend. The Amplifires play at The Appleby, in Green Street, tomorrow night alongside Nottingham rockers Jezebel and Northampton-based punks Thracia, with the event starting at 8pm. The Matlock-based four-piece will be playing material from their most recent album, Fire On The Moon, including forthcoming single SWALK and tracks they played on a recent 12-date, two-week tour of the United States. Guitarist Steve Rawlinson said: “We had a great time but what we didn’t realise was how big the place is; the distance between gigs was enormous. “We played our last gig in up-state New York and it then took 10 hours of almost continuous driving to get to the airport. “The crowds were fantastic; they knew the words to some of the songs better than we did due to the radio play we’ve been getting over there. Steve, who in his other life is chief executive of Burton-based charity organisation CASES, says the band is hoping to consolidate the support base it has built up in the Nottingham and Sheffield areas with more gigs in the wider Midlands, including Burton. “We’ve played Burton before but at bike rallies and now I work in the town this is the most natural thing to do,” he said. The band are currently in the top 100 of the Windows Music Download chart and have been number one UK band, and number four worldwide, in the online Reverb Nation alternative chart. More information on the band, along with sample tracks, is available online at www.amplifires.co.uk and www.myspace.com/theamplifiresuk. |

A truly fantastic opportunity for The Amplifires, who would have thought a couple of years ago we would have been traversing the Interstates of the USA, let alone playing at some really great venues and meeting some truly unforgetable people, Redsy, Brenda, Horacio, Mark and The Woo Hoos, Dave etc from 240 North, Angela from Potsdam and the Aberrant Kingdom guys stand out. Of course the ultimately genuine and generous Larry and his family were the real stars - putting up with four strangers with a penchance for rapid mood swings couldn't have been easy.
It all started well, arriving at JFK with phone in hand to call Larry and ask where he was only to find 3G hadn't arrivedin the USA yet - apparently they are waiting for The Mayflower to arrive !, so it was a case of two weeks of being out of contact with anyone at home or on here as my laptop dongle was also 3G. What fun !
We got through the next few days finding as many Wal-Marts as we could, their selection of crisps ( chips ) and Doritos astounding everyone - I presume that crisps are the national dish :-)
The gigs went well for the first few days, decent crowds and friendly people everywhere, all of who thought we were awesome - they can tell us that as often as they like. We then got to The Enclave in Willoughby, an internet coffee house! Well that was different, highlight of the night the size of the Iceberg lettuce Sharon got from the restaurant over the road!, athough Sharon collapsed in the corner of the RV demanding crisps after a number of Tequila shots before she would go to bed was rather funny. However I guess for me that night was a turning point and although we played some great venues after that and met all the people and more mentioned above things weren't the same and I was counting down the days from the 24th - sad that it was the case but events and dynamics overtook the exhileration of being over there, I'm not sure anything will ever be the same again even though we're back home now.
We ploughed on - 300 miles here, 400 there and saw loads of roads, trees and multicoloured houses in various states of disrepair, all the venues were 'awesome', avoiding the Hicks on Long Island and the rats in Brooklyn one evening being a memory of New York I would rather forget but Goodbye Blue Monday, the venue, was great. Culminating at La Casbah in Potsdam which actually lived up to the title of awesome, a tour of the University radio station, and doing a jingle for the show, as well as an interview, true 'rock stars'!!
And then so quickly it was over, we had rocked the US, and they had rocked us too.
Truly amazing

Smouldering Rock
The Amplifires - FIRE ON THE MOON
A helping of ear-shredding hardcore from this Matlock-based quartet, who have called upon significant experience in numerous bands and on countless stages, to deliver a wall of buzzing guitar and razor-sharp snare.
The rock ethics of Curved Air meet the freedom of Ludus and the cutting edge of Blondie, to send shivers of recognition down the spine and make an emotional impact upon the world.
Watching The Walls is particularly strong, with its hypnotic riffs, courtesy of guitarist Steve Rawlinson and bassist David Brunt, which combine with Sharon Clancy's vocal to burn into your head and leave you wanting more.
The title track sets out to strip your senses and the combination of Ruth Dobson's Paul Cook-style drums and the percussive guitars truly hit the mark.
