Category: Music
Comrades, fellow travelers and committed members of the party, I present to you:
The aftereffects of a sustained indoctrination of my breakcore roots with four-on-the-floor and 125-140 beats. Infiltrators of my brokenbeat, amen-pure mental state included: Donna Summer, Com.a, Passions, DJ Family, David Last, Curses!, Starkey, Bird Peterson, Dj Deeon, Switch and the 2step/UK Garage pirate radio broadcasts that reached me in a weakened state as I returned from squat parties in 1999.
Yes, I confess to you all, I was sucked kicking and screaming back into house music. The inevitability of history (guilty late nights in 1994 at the Paradise gay bar basement in Boston, hopping to Cajmere), and my continuing admiration and uncontrolled body manipulation by the aforementioned characters sent me in that direction: falling backwards from the po-faced dubstep and the skrewface/drooling breakcore, wiggling up from the 2step sounds.. here it is in all its glory. A party manifesto.
It wasn't easy. The melodic charms so much more prevalent in this style, the square beats that encourage smooth tweaking rather than the rough cutting I favor, all of these were obstacles. My tone-arms weakened by 12 years of hard use in the interest of the Party, occasionally sent Serato wonky and resistant. But I soldiered on! The last hurdle: my preference for swung time/triplets mixed with backbeat 2step - a shuddery-juddery boogie that can't be made too clean. Hopefully you all will agree.
Onward the party!

so.. yeah
kid k and I packed up our stuff. took a 1-month european tour (BO - www.mashittour.com), drove around the east coast from NC to Boston (wild ponies and Truro beaches included), and then took 2 weeks to take the not at all direct route across the country (Toledo/Maumee, Chicago, Muscatine, Iowa City, Lawrence, Kansas City, Denver, Salt Lake, Buhl Idaho, Boise, Portland Oregon, Astoria Oregon, SF.
woooooosh.
and we signed a lease on an apartment in North Oakland Saturday.
Hooking up musically is going great - Havocsound, 5lowershop, Spaz, ffflood, all kinds of people have been welcoming, we have met some new folks as well...
and now I'm about to disa-fucking-pear... I have homeworkf for my Torts class, to do before classes start. And did I mention that the Torts book costs exactly half of what I have in the bank until my first check comes?
woo.
so, come seek me out and say hi, so I don't drown in academia and brokeness.
I am loving it out here, nevertheless..

yes indeed. I'll be moving to Berkeley in August. Scary! leaving the east coast.. my yankee ass surrounded by people who are friendly for no reason, and a chance to start caring about the weather.
I'll be looking for music contacts - the glitch/breakcore/ragga/dub/jungle thing especially.
Me and the boy will be looking for a place together in the commute-to-berkeley area. Oakland/temescal/north of there sounds good - biking distance. Or even SF in the Mission near the BART (my dream, cuz the Mission feels more like Brooklyn) - give a headsup if you have any hints for housing.
Also my first time living with my partner.. any partner.. but we don't fight and spend nearly every day together as it is.
I'll be sad to leave all my best girlfriends - the rockinest smartest most creative posse of activist/fashion designer/flame artist/video editor/herbalist/dominatrixes ever. I'll need more ladies in SF and berkeley, they have some there, right?
