MARTYN

"Get the funk down". Martyn (real name Martyn Deykers) has provided body moving, Detroit techno influenced funk to the dance floors since the early nineties. A love for Detroit techno, Chicago house and hiphop fueled his need to be seriously involved in music. When exposed to drum & bass in 1995, Martyn was destined to take things further musically and began to lay the foundations of his career as a DJ, producer and promoter. As a founding member and resident DJ of the Red Zone collective Martyn brought the city of Eindhoven (Holland) a range of quality drum & bass nights for 10 consecutive years. In the meantime, with the promoter role well established Martyn pursued his career taking dj'ing / producing to a next level.
In 2005, Martyn's own productions started surfacing in the drum & bass scene, receiving healthy rotation by the top dons such as Fabio, Grooverider, Andy C, Digital, Flight, Storm, Calyx, Teebee, Friction, Marcus Intalex, Lee, Fierce & D-Bridge on various radio shows & at live events. In Autumn of 2005 the first high profile releases for Martyn made it to the shops: nxt 2 u / deepwood on DJ play:musik, and Get Down / Black Lies on Marcus Intalex' Revolve:r imprint. The consequence of these two releases was that Martyn was tagged as 'a promising new comer' at BBC 1xtra's Best of 2005 Chart (3rd best newcomer) and back home in Holland where he was awarded "Best Producer" at the Dutch DNB Awards. After these two 12"es, Martyn continued to explore his sound further with another play:musik release in 2006, a release on Irish imprint Bassbin, and a remix for Graphic's "I am Metal" (which featured avant-garde lyricist Beans of Warp fame) for New York City cult label Offshore. Furthermore, Martyn's close involvement with Revolve:r/Soul:r was crystallized with another 12" called I Wonder Why / Share my Wings and four tracks on Revolve:r's compilation CD Dat:Music released in December 2006.
Martyn's production stretches further than the boundaries of drum & bass. His style received attention from Nomadico aka Dj Dex, a member of Underground Resistance (Detroit) who has remixed Martyn's "Get Down" for Revolve:r. Also on Revolve:r, Martyn is on a downtempo mission with "Broken" and "Shadowcasting", a sizzling 12" release that came out in may of '07. These two tracks were definitely a breakthrough for Martyn into the wider dance music scene, as his music is now being recognized by dj's in the techno, house and dubstep world. His tracks have been receiving healthy radio- and dj-play by great names such as Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garnier, Ame, Mark Pritchard, Rob Smith from Smith and Mighty, Benji B, Kode9, dj S2 from Underground Resistance, Mala DMZ, Scuba, Slaughter Mob, Skull Disco crew, Audio Werner, Sebbo and Marc Schneider. Full of musical ideas, Martyn has just finished another Revolver 12" – "JW on a Good Night // Storm Watch", remix work for Leeds-based dubstep label Hessle Audio, and two more 12es where his fusion of techno, dub and dusty old samples receives even more exploration.
Martyn's talents are best displayed while DJing, providing an eclectic musical selection while not being afraid to bring new sounds to the table, dipping into various genres, if the vibe is right for it, all adding to his versatility. He has played at a wide range of venues all over the world, not forgetting his various radio appearances such as BBC 1Xtra & Radio 1, Kool FM London, KUSF San Francisco, Ministry of Sound, FM4, FreshFM (Austrian National Radio), Tilos (Hungary), Studio
Brussels (Belgian national radio) and 3Voor12 (Dutch national radio).
His DJ work has become more frequent & far-reaching, with increasing interest being shown worldwide in recognition of his distinct style of DJing & production. At the end of 2006, Martyn won the Best DJ category at the Dutch DNB Awards. Judging from the response to Martyn's recent performances in the USA [NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Houston, Dallas, Boston, Washington DC], UK [Plastic People, Herbal, Fabric, Scala & Swerve (London), Audiosalad (Manchester), Carbon (Brighton), Momentum & Subdub (Leeds), Intrigue & Hench (Bristol), Submerged (Cardiff) and Source (Oxford)] and Germany [Robert Johnson in Frankfurt, WaterGate Berlin, Cologne, Stuttgart and Munich], Hungary [Budapest and Debrecen], Spain [Sonar Festival Barcelona], Ireland [Dublin], 2007 is set to be an outstanding year for this Dutch genius!
