Yes, yes, I know it's been awhile.  Well, this year has been such a busy one with lots of peaks and valleys to keep me on my toes.  Everything moves in cycles and next year will bring lots of new music.  The first thing I want to share is my collaboration with Bomb The Bass.  I got a nice letter back in late summer asking to collaborate on a track for the new record.  Since such great names as Jon Spencer & Mark Lanegan were guest vocals in the last record, I couldn't refuse. It turned out amazing, it's a real shift in gears of how I typically write, but I loved it and I'm proud of the results.  I finally have a dance song!

The record is called Back To Light and will released in March, after 4 singles have been released.  Here's the blog post with some more info from them.

My track is called Up The Mountain.
Did I mention that Martin Gore from Depeche Mode is on the track right next to mine?
!!

P.s.  I'll get tee shirts up and for sale again soon.  I'd like to sell through these and get enough funds to make another batch!

Email me if you'd like to buy one now, we can do it through paypal. Just email me your size and I'll send you one.  Battlemusic (at) gmail (dot) com.  They are $15 US and are a soft vintage feel.

Men's sizes S-M-L
Women's M-L-XL  (these run slim)

Last Friday I participated in a total immersion songwriting day, which resulted in 10 new tunes.  Not all are golden keepers by any means, but I think at least 3 may see the light of day.  If I was to sit down with the goal of writing 3 songs, I'd never be able to accomplish this.  But with the goal of writing 20 songs and with the understanding that some with be okay, some will be terribly awful, this is how a handful are going to be good or even great.  We had a much larger group this time around, there were 6 of us (last time it was 3) so 10 songs was fine for the listening session afterward.  I want to share these in demo form, but I'm waiting for my website to get up and running in order to share some downloads with you.
Sit tight my friends, new music coming.

p.s. I was out on a walk the other day with Jacob and we passed M Ward on the street, we'd met him last year at SXSW as Jacob had played a show with him, but I was too shy to say "hey" because if he didn't remember, the awkward feeling of just standing there would be terrible.  Dear M Ward, if you happen to read this because you have google alert's set up for your name, "Hello to you, perhaps you live in our neighborhood, see you around."

p.p.s  I'm really enjoying rereading my David Sedaris books.  He's such a hoot and I find a strange comfort in his stories.  My extended family is pretty crazy and twisted in subtle and not so subtle ways, so the inner dialogue that goes on while sitting the dinner table or on the phone, well, I better be quiet before I get a terse email from a family member with a paranoid guilty conscience.  When I write my book, I'm using a pen name, because I'm a wuss:)

Time to go for a walk,
Sarah

Me Talk Pretty One Day
By David Sedaris
November 3, 2008 - Monday

First off, the total immersion songwriting day was a complete success, I managed to churn out the 20 songs that is the goal. I accomplished what normally would take me a year in 12 hours, with demo recordings. I was left feeling jet lagged for 2 days afterward. I'd say 10 of the songs are winners. None of the songs are longer than 2 minutes mind you, so there are verses that still need to written, etc... I'll share one soon, not how or where though. Any suggestions? Not sure about myspace as it's SO public. Any suggestions?
Here are some of titles of ones i'm quite excited about:
Viriginia Woolf
Oh my deer, keep to the brambles
Behind Washington Farm
Follow through seasons
Approach of winter
Daniel Boone
My child
Oh, I am a soldier

Onto the oldies but goodies.
I get a lot of questions about where to get the physical cd (sorry if I haven't answered everyone, I was waiting for the reprint) Mis ojos discos repressed our album with a new fancy digipak and has it available in the shop for purchase now. Enjoy!

visit the mis ojos discos shop where you can find our cd and t-shirts

We have a Facebook band page now, I the admin person, so I'll be hanging around. Please join in and help spread the word.

i'm doing a total immersion songwriting day tomorrow for 12 hours without any outside distraction (aka internet/phone/tv). starting at 8am. the goal is to write at least 20 songs, you record them humbly along the way. a few other people are doing this also, then we get together and play the recordings for each other. kinda scary and fun at the same time.
out of 20 songs, a few have to be worthy of working on. i'll let you know how it goes, perhaps i'll share a few if i'm feeling brave!

Today is proving to be a bit strange already. I'm busy writing and recording, well i'm kinda in writers block mode right now because i'm leaning more towards making new things for my etsy shop craftyFOLK. It's nice to work in different mediums and this really gets my creative mind working well for all things actually. I'm so fond of one of a kind or limited edition creations. I have big plans for the next EP release in regards to some Limited Edition and Ultra Limited Edition versions...other than these special made versions we're planning on it being a digital release. I'm going all out on this one, if you were impressed by the sewn sleeves last go around, watch out...I've got big BIG plans girls and boys...

take care,

we've been hibernating a bit lately, so to perk things up around here i've posted
'six days' on the player and it's available to download.
if you have the record this won't seem so spectacular, but if you don't have the record (tsk tsk)
enjoy.
for all the folks that have been asking - our record is being repressed soon for our new label mis ojos discos, then i'll get
the physical cd's up here for consumption.

an EP will be coming this fall too...

June 17, 2008 - Tuesday

we've been playing a few handful of shows here on the East Coast, a good mix of club venues, living room, garage and basements...here are some photos and tales of the travels thus far.

if anyone has photos of us from shows they'd be welcomed at battlemusic@gmail.com, as i'm onstage i don't get to take the photos:)

Baltimore, MD -The Golden West- this was the first show, played at The Golden West, it was the beginning of a heatwave and someone got beat up with a baseball bat outside the next afternoon when we stopped by for some brunch. geez

The Golden West

this is Braegen - Old Tender Heart - who hooked us up with the gig...thank you

Annville, PA - The Chicken Coop - driving up from Baltimore to Annville, we passed through Hershey, PA which had the incredible smell
of chocolate in the air...didn't have time to stop but got to drive through and the streetlights are hershey kisses which was terribly cute.
here at The Chicken Coop there was a large gathering of young folks who respected and loved music and it was a great vibe.
we got there in time to catch Tara Toms set, great songs, check her out...we left that night with a good warm feeling inside, which is most welcome on the road.
here are some pics of the evening:

Brooklyn, NY - Union Hall- i love playing Union Hall, it's really close to our label Mis Ojos Discos and i managed to get parking right out
front this time...this show had 3 bands from Portland, OR, yes THREE. can't really get better than that in NYC.
Weinland were really really good and we should play with them more often. i had been in touch with the singer about a year ago to set up a show but it never happened as i was in the middle of moving and leaving town for awhile, so it took us a cross country trip by chance to be booked on the same night.

Stroudsburg, PA - living room show - thank you to Chris and Diane for having us in your home and giving us a well air conditioned
place to lay our heads! i don't have any pictures from this night, if you have some please post or send to me and i'll put them up.

Boston, MA - Twin Peaks JP - basement show - my cousin Nicole and her husband Kevin showed out of the blue to this gig which was a
total surprise (they live in Albany) so it was great to see them:) we played with Keith Kenniff and his brother Colin who played electric guitar alongside him...they were fantastic, some of the most beautiful melodies and hushed vocals i've stumbled upon in a long time. please befriend them.
thank you Hollie Gilson for the photo.

heading back to NYC for a few more shows and then flying home to Portland, OR for a few days of rest and then hitting the road down the West Coast.
i'm looking forward to being on my home turf and playing some shows that have familiar faces...will feel good.
after that i'm gonna stay home, record an EP and finish other lingering projects, i'll keep you informed and put up some new stuff when the time comes...

on the road,
sarah

Current mood:  refreshed
it's gorgeous outside today in Portland.
it's been a good weekend.
on Friday night we had the pleasure of supporting Vetiver
here in Portland at the Roseland.
was a good show and they were such nice guys.
i like playing all ages shows, except for the strict alcohol rules.
alcohol is allowed in the bar, backstage and onstage, but not on the floor -
which you have to walk across in order to get from the bar to the stage. hmmm.
i had to have a wine escort from the promoter take my glass around the building for me...for real.
alas we were together again and went onstage to sing some songs.
all around good night, got some late night vietnamese food and went home to
watch Battlestar Galactica. why haven't more people caught onto the greatness of
this show? it baffles me.
last night we went to The Funky Church to see our friend Kele Goodwin play his
beautiful songs, was a great night as well...until, i got home and realized my beloved
guitar was missing. this a terrible feeling of hunting around the house and realizing
that your guitar was left at the club the night before.
drove down to the Roseland at midnight to find them closed.
i was completely bummed and cried quite a bit.
called up the promoter this morning and yes he had it in his office.
the Vetiver guys had found it and given it to him for safe keeping.
i am so grateful to them! thank you!

time to take a nap.

p.s. the new Portishead record is really great.
April 27, 2008 - Sunday

Current mood:  productive
so we're booking some tours, thought i'd give you a little update
before everything is confirmed and all.
firstly though there are a couple Portland shows coming up: this Saturday at The Funky Church - headlining gig and then Friday May 2nd we have the pleasure of supporting Vetiver at the Roseland. wow.

onto the tour-
to the East Coast for a few weeks, then home to Portland for a
couple days of sleep, then a West Coast jaunt.

here's the breakdown/plan.

June 4th-19th - brooklyn, baltimore, dc, philly, boston, providence, portland maine,
new haven or somewhere near, northampton, etc...

June 21st- July3rd - LA, San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, Seattle, Bend, Olympia, Portland, Nevada City

some of these are already or are close to confirmed so check back often.
please give a shout if you have some good ideas or leads of where to play or if you are in a band and think you could set up some good, creative, bookings in these cities...
thank you!

here's a youtube video from our last Boston show.
Harden My Heart - The Battle of Land and Sea @ PA's Lounge
April 2, 2008 - Wednesday

Current mood:  mischievous
i’ve been a wee bit lazy on the blog front, but rest assured that i’ve also been lazy
in other portions of my life as well, i have no clean socks and i haven’t even started
projects that should have well been underway.
oh well.

i’ve been traveling a lot over the last year, and i’m finally in one place for more than a couple months right now. i just moved into a house here in Portland and i’m loving the space and privacy of having all my own walls. i don’t have to hear neighbors sneezing or walking overhead, this is a huge celebration for me. i’m a private homebody of a person and having immediate neighbors always freaked me out. i hate having stop n’ chats in the driveway or hallway. i guess growing up in the country where nobody could hear you or you couldn’t hear another soul has stamped a huge imprint on my comfort level for dwelling next to others.
it took me this long, but me and mine finally have our own walls. good times.

the house came with a big beautiful piano, which i’ve been working on some new tunes with.

t-shirts and bags are coming soon. i’ve been so lazy with merch!

i bought a basketball today. you’d be surprised what good follow through i have on my shot:)

a video for The Beautiful Ones will be underway soon as well. i’ll be working with a local film director on that. should be great.

happy April Fool’s Day, i got a good one in already today. the look on his face was pretty priceless...

if any Portlanders are around for the Vetiver show on May 2 come on out to the Roseland, we’re opening and it’ll be a good night!

today i woke up with my left eye swollen half way, i get this a lot for some reason when i’m in England, i thought it was the harsh hotel detergents over there. but now it happened here, hmmm, not sure what it is i’m allergic too. but i look a bit like Thom Yorke, which could explain why i’ve been listening to Radiohead most of the day....very interesting.

hope everyone is doing swell,
sarah
February 15, 2008 - Friday
playing the Mercury Lounge this Sunday Feb 17th.
9pm
Butane Variations, Ravens and Vultures and Brown Recluse Sings

it's an early show so come in time for the other bands.

Jacob Golden will be joining me on electric guitar:)
don't miss out.

see you there,
sarah

p.s. happy valentine's day motherfuckers:)
