Interview with Scott Causer - The Electric Mainline

Aproveitem:

Interview 18/10 – Scott Cause from The Electric Mainline / Northerstar Records

Q. When did The Electric Mainline star?
A. The name The Electric Mainline has been doing the rounds since October 2004. It was initially a name we recorded under. The name comes from the Spiritualized instrumental Electric Mainline as I always thought it would be a cool name to use and I believe it accurately reflects our music. We recorded some demos and put them up on myspace and from there we had a really good response. We were in touch with a lot of bands such as The Black Angels, The Stevenson Ranch Davidians, The Dolly Rocker Movement etc.

Q. When did Nothern Star Records start?
A. We were aiming to put our own 7” single out and then realised that no-one was going to buy a record from a band no-ones ever heard of. We were in touch with a lot of like-minded bands and I hit on the idea of putting together a compilation of these great bands. I then formed formed Northern Star Records with a friend of mine who ran a webzine.

Q. Tell us abou Psychedelica Compilation and The Electric Mainline debut EP?
A. By the time the Psychedelica compilation was out the initial line-up of TEM had disbanded. Northern Star then went on to take a life of its own and the project was temporarily sidelined. I continued writing and recording under the name and self-released the All Too Much EP which sold very well from the Northern Star website. Shortly after this Fran joined in and we’ve been the core of the band ever since, playing sporadically, with different people coming and going. Despite the constant writing and recording nothing has been released since, until this year when a remixed version of All Too Much appeared on the Revolution In Sound compilation. We’d put together a new line-up and felt it would be a good idea to get the name out there again and start putting tunes. We’re currently writing and recording and some of thesenew songs will be seeing the light of day very soon.

Q. Who are your influences/heroes?
A. The main influences I guess came from growing up as a teenager and listening to my favourite era of music, the mid-to-late 80s. I was listening to The Smiths, The Cure, The Stone Roses, Joy Division, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Primal Scream. However I also grew up listening to punk and psychedelia so I have all these things going round in my head.

Q. What..s you opinion about the classic shoegazer era?
A. The shoegaze era is something I find myself increasingly confused by – as with all types of music there was good and bad . I love Ride, The Telescopes, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine who were all considered shoegaze bands, but I see them as great psychedelic influenced pop bands. While there is undeniably an element of that in our music, its more of a dreamy psychedelia. I don’t care too much for genres to be honest. We just play what we want to play. If anything we’re an out-and-out pop band. Every song is different from the last and we all bring different things to the mix. Its all about making the music that means something to you.

Q. What..s your opinion about the new shoegazer era ?
A. The most interesting thing for me about this new so-called ‘gaze’ scene is the bands that take it as an influence and turn it into something of their own. Bands such as The Nova Saints, Youngteam, The December Sound, Maribel, Screen Vinyl Image, Dead Leaf Echo are all striving for something higher and this is what really blows my minds about these bands. You can hear it in their music. Some of these bands appear on the new Northern Star compilation Revolution In Sound. I strongly recommend this for anyone who’s looking for something a little different and into noisy pop songs.

Thanks Scott!!!!

Em tempo, o debut do The Electric Mainline - All too Much é daqueles cds que tem que ter, acido, psicodelismo, shoegazer, dreampop condensados em preciosas canções, altamente recomendavel!!!!

The Music Fix say...

"The Electric Mainline are regulars upon the Sonic Boom/Jason Pierce Saturday Special to Flat Out Fucked By-The-Sea, where they're often joined by The Voices..."

Honestly not sure what this means... answers on a postcard... but it is a lazy piss poor review of a fantastic album, but if you want to read the rest:

The Electric Mainline gets picked out from RETR00:

Big up to Fab and Georgia from Retrophobic including The Electric Mainline on their compilation RETR00.  The album is free to download from:

http://www.retrophobic.com/RETR00/RETR00-www.retrophobic.com.zip

They say it all better in their own words:

"Well, where to start? Retrophobic began as a sort of escape from daytime jobs and everyday bullshit. Music is basically what we like to talk and write about. The best shit to listen to, the best bands to dress like, the best gigs, and the whole "subcultural" thing, and this big feeling of being part of a "worldwide something". So this turned out to be a sort of basket where all our influences pop into. The Sixties, Northern Soul, Punk Rock, Psychedelia, the past, the present and the future. There are plenty of good bands out there, not necessarily the ones you see on the music papers. And finding new bands and sounds is a job we love. So we started thinking about the idea of assembling a free compilation, to promote quality music we met doing Retrophobic. We wanted to say hey this is the shit we dig, it's free, so download it, why dontcha?  Cool things are just a bit under the shell. This sampler sounds very eclectic, really in the spirit of Retrophobic, hope you'll appreciate. A big thank you goes out to the bands and artists that provided the matter of this compilation, and to all our readers and downloaders. Stuff your iPods, burn your CDs, enjoy the music, this is RETR00."

TEM highlighted in Psychotropic Review from Finland :)

http://www.unimeri.com/PsychotropicZone/reviews.en.php?subaction=showfull&id=1247474109&archive=&start_from=&ucat=3&

Northern Star Records from the UK are about to release their fourth compilation album after the critically acclaimed and very popular Psychedelica albums. This label can be considered as one of the most important promoters of the third wave of psychedelia and they have done everything in their power to bring the genre closer to the mainstream. The compilations have mostly included sort of shoegaze/indie rock/experimental/alternative stuff, but this time there is also some more electronic music in there. The noisy and buzzing guitars are still well represented. Some of the bands that have been involved before as well are for example The Nova Saints, The December Sound, The Electric Mainline and Youngteam. This almost 80-minute-long CD have altogether 17 songs from bands that mainly come from the UK and USA, but there are also bands from Russia (Punk TV, Hot Zex) Norway (Maribel), and Sweden (Youngteam). Many of the bands seem to be influenced at least by Spacemen 3, Velvet Undergound, The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Sonic Youth and Joy Division, but some also by for example NEU!, The Flaming Lips and The Verve.

One of the best aspects of this as well as the previous Northern Star compilations is that you’re bound to find some new bands. Although you might have pumped into many of them by accident someplace, this kind of an album is always a great beginning for new expeditions in music. The first track that immediately caught my attention was by the Russian band Punk TV: the very danceable “Vala Svala” that has a disco rhythm. This is like Depeche Mode on acid with all its psychedelic sounds, soft Pet Shop Boys like vocals and lush keyboards. The track stands out from the otherwise pretty hard album and I like it a lot. It’s strange that I hadn’t noticed this “Russian Chemical Brothers” before, although they have gigged in Finland. Right after that we get the fierce and fast “No Heaven Like Hell” by The December Sound and this song has plenty of power and emotion. It’s absolutely one of the highlights on the album and the band is among my favorites at the moment. Some of the most powerful stuff of the album also include the hypnotic “Sick Fuzz” by Ursula Minor bringing to mind early Spacemen 3, the electric and hallucinatory “All Too Much” by The Electric Mainline and the pretty psychedelic “You Created a Storm” by Laboratory Noise. The rather slow, hypnotic and heavy “The Black Sun Sets” by The Voices brings to mind one of my favorite bands Sun Dial as does the album’s first, although lighter, band Maribel. The Manhattan Love Suicides plays frisky, buzzing and punky rock with female vocals and The Nova Saints track “Lights” sounds a bit like U2, and I mean it in a good way.

In addition to Punk TV, the more electronic side of the album is presented with the groovy Hot Zex that features some same members, Delicasession’s “Tape Check” that includes great synthesizers , the exciting sounding Sunnyvale Noise Sub-element and the quite mesmerizing Screen Vinyl Image with their buzzing bass sequences. Also the quite slow instrumental track “Motorik” by Kontakte has programmed drums and it finishes the album in a very dreamy and amazing way. Other wonderful and peaceful moments are offered also by Dead Leaf Echo whose soft and drifting, heavenly beautiful “Pale Fire” reminds me a bit of The Verve and the pretty ”Introducing Mr. Gladstone” by Youngteam. The Mint Ive song somehow brings to mind The Cure. All in all, this is a totally brilliant compilation that will spin a lot in DJ Astro’s CD player, and I bet that this is the case for lots of other people, as well. It’s a wise move to order the album directly from the label so you can get it before the actual street date and you’ll also receive another compilation as a free gift…
