"Bearing Gifts"

Everyone wants their own way at Christmas,

i finish my meal in time for Doctor Who.

i avoid the dishes.

jug and a half of mulled wine later,

yes i know, you preferred Tom Baker.

Bearing gifts,bearing gifts for everyone

bearing gifts,bearing gifts for everyone

bearing gifts,bearing gifts for everyone.

They will take their cue from other children,

then somebody tells them santa is not real....

don't believe a word.

we've seen the magic of the big guy,

who else would eat the devil's mince pie

Bearing gifts,bearing gifts for everyone

bearing gifts,bearing gifts for everyone

bearing gifts,bearing gifts for everyone

The nasty boy,who screams and stamps his feet

well he will get a lump of coal.

we slide down hills,in the Cookston fields

and fashion a sledge from a bag.

I did not write letters then to santa,

i'd cut and paste some photos from a clubbie book.

i wanted Rod Hull's emu.

hey what did you get in that cracker,

plastic lips or a pencil sharpener?

Bearing gifts,bearing gifts for everyone

bearing gifts,bearing gifts for everyone

bearing gifts,bearing gifts for everyone

they pushed and shoved, searching for that toy

hardly a smile raised at all

come Christmas day,the kid wants something else

they should'nt have wasted their time.

Everyone should cease to fight at Christmas,

even if it only lasts a couple of hours

stop the carol singing

yes i bloody hate your snowman,

knock him down and build a new one

Bearing gifts,bearing gifts for everyone

bearing gifts,bearing gifts for everyone

bearing gifts,bearing gifts for everyone

We'd like to extend our thanks to Caroline Gardiner who joined us at several gigs recently on Cello.

check out her band:

Also thanks to Biz who played the most amazing drums at recent gigs,it was a pleasure.

Biz plays with many bands including,AKA Ska and 16 Again(was also drummer with the legendary Mighty Human Generator).

Mr Jonthehat has been fantastic too.You can see him playing some acoustic bass and banjo at future Scunner gigs.

We also have Rowan playing drums for us at upcoming gigs as well.

So ignore the rumours..............Scunner are not bowing out!We will exist as a two-piece,bringing different people in to play live.

thank you,

Scunner.

String Theory  :   8/10

Drip Static opens the album in a sprightly, familiar vain, coming across like a Libertines/glam rock crossover but ultimately modern, so residing closer to the former - especially during the changes.   This is something that is achieved, rather pleasantly on occasions throughout the album, like in Zebra Grove, Morse Code and Debonair, with charismatic instrumentation and effects at the forefront of the musical delights.  As well as these, there are turn-ons aplenty to be had lyrically and honed highlights include the biting Café Society.

Diversity in sound, amongst their other qualities, is one that Scunner love to flaunt.  A polkaed playfulness and powerful intensity is evenly applied throughout  The Other Side Of My Mouth and Gilbert Waits For Goblins, in which Scunner's penchant for the travesty via Sparks becomes apparent.   This is contrasted by some very tender, enticing melodies, offered particularly via Carnaby Street.  At the very least all this shows some fantastic sides to Scunner's entity, making them utterly more interesting.

Album highlights Sledge Foot and My Profession encapsulate a more filtered essence of exhibitionist punk, usually associated to New York Dolls or Tyrannosaurus Rex, but it is no less enthralling to listen to and the urbane mayhem of the latter spills over and mixes nicely with the trippy, Bolan-esque Lost At The Fair.

In String Theory, we venture down a powder painted road which Scunner love to stomp down, espying Bowie, Bolan, the Maels, Gary Glitter and a multi-coloured platter of like-minded others along the way.  Despite drawing from sounds originating a fair while back, the full on nature of the album and sharp production ensure it could easily fit in amongst its modern equivalents, if not surpass them.  A mixture of upbeat numbers and uncompromising, vicious vocals mean Scunner have acquired a cultured pretension that will undoubtedly force itself upon anyone.  They are armed with a platform shoe in one hand and copy of Earnest in the other, and once they've trampled the listener into submission, this album definitely has enough appeal to firmly bury itself deep within.
