Current mood:  confused
...as in, broken up.

I know it's sad, but it is what it is but the show must go on.
So in the spirit of moving forward my new makeshift band, Mon Mecs will be performing in place of The Slack Republic.
For unreleased songs, updates on band members and new projects check back often.

BIO-

Bursting onto the indie rock scene with the reckless abandon reminiscent of a young Iggy Pop, The Slack Republic seem dead set on becoming the new standard for work ethic amongst unsigned bands. Adopting the Earn-It-Yourself philosophy of friend and fellow musician Sarah Saturday, The Slack Republic seem unaffected by the limitations placed on bands lacking label support. They do what they want!

For in the 6 short months The Slack Republic has been a band, they have managed to make quite a name for themselves. From their very first show, opening for HR (of Bad Brains), to more recently closing out a show at the Knitting Factory NY, precedents for what a new band can and can not do are being set. And in true slack form, The SR continue to break the rules with their upcoming summer tour, scheduled to include select dates on the Vans Warped Tour, CBGB's New York (July 4th weekend), as well as Toronto Dates.

According to Meczilla, the band's singer and spokeswoman (by default), "[The Slack Republic] is arguable one of the hardest working bands on the scene. We're not trust fund kids. We haven't had anything handed to us. The Slack Republic works very hard for every accolade, opportunity and criticism we receive.
We've earned these stripes."

Fortunately for the band, there isn't much to criticize on The Slack Tax Tour sampler. The unofficially released, six song sampler serves as much more than a sample to the unassuming listener. They coat classic genres such as rock and punk with a shiny new lacquer of modern aesthetics, derived mostly from Indie Rock, Post-punk and drum & bass. Their driving guitar riffs, danceable drum beats and catchy, sass soaked (sometime caustic) lyrics are constant throughout.

So as they head into the studio this summer, for what may very well become their first official release, The Slack Republic have much to live up to. When asked about meeting the expectations of their fans, Mec smirked and replied "It's a challenge, but the challenge is not besting ourselves as much as it is satisfying everyone, which we all know is impossible. If we put forward our best calculated effort, it will rock, period. Anyone who isn't satisfied with that, is likely never satisfied with anything"

RANDOM BLURBS-

Formed: April 1st, 2005

First Show: Dec 15th / April 17th (w/ current line-up)
Line-up: Mec on vocals, Pierre on Guitar (2 amps), Michael on Bass & Lane on Drums
Genre: Indie Punk Rock/Post-Modern Punk
Influences: The Buzzcocks, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, System of a Down, Oueens of the Stoneage, Bad brains, Blondie, Nirvana.

The Slack Republic is many things to many people. Best describe as "what happens when people truly stop giving a shit", The Slack Republic represent to some, a society worn out by the modern day existence, fighting to preserve itself. To others The Slack Republic is a band, discontent with the order of things; forguing a path, for both themselves and all that may follow.

The Band-
Meczilla (of Brooklyn, NY) and Pierre Moore (of Jackson, MS) met by chance on a popular Internet community called myspace.com, in late March of 2005. Their brief correspondence, turned into an instant message conversation that spanned all of 2 days and ended with the two deciding meet in person. Mec recalls drinking hot tea to nurse the cold she had caught just days before while performing at the Winter Music Conference, while Pierre threw back straight black coffee to combat the effects of the sleep deprived nights that had accumulated since the disbanding of his wildly popular Jackson Mississippi band, IZM.

They discussed politics, musical aspirations, and ramen noodle recipes way into the early morning hours, not sure what would become of their meeting. One can only assume that the conversation Mec & Pierre had that morning was of the life changing and all inspiring kind. For the moment they reached their respective homes, they were back at it; this time, discussing a song that Pierre had composed. It was later that early morning (thanks to the advent of the internet) that the two recorded their first song together. "Not Ready" was a spur of the moment effort by Mec to denounce the idea that the masses could be receptive to new sounds and ideas. In her mind the world simply could not be ready.

Now rated by myspace.com as the ..1 unsigned indie band in Georgia, "Not Ready" stands as a fan favorite, proving that if given enough time, the world may one day be ready for The Slack republic.

ROUGH TIMELINE-

(Year 0)

Feb 2005- Of all the things they owned, Mike and Pierre sell whatever they could not fit in their car and drive 6 hours to atlanta in search of new prospects.

March 2005- Mec continues to experiment with producers such as Wale Oyejide and Chris Brann. She performs with The Ananda Project at the winter music conference in Miami at the tokion.fm launch party. March 30- Pierre and Mec start an internet conversation that spans 2 whole days. Pierre send Mec a few song Ideas he had been working on.

April 2005- Pierre and I meet on April 1st. We sat in my room sipping caribou coffee and tea (respectively) and talked to the early hours. Pierre went home, leaving the hint of something promising behind. It gets late so we retreat to their respective homes. My mind still racing by the time he got home, so we talked online some more. Despite the fact that I was completely horse and quite sleep deprived from trip to wmc that year, early that morning we record their first demo (Not Ready) over the internet. We met on April 1st, by the next afternoon he was sending me a mixed version of our first song and I was sending him vocals for the our second demo. April 2nd. We played with the idea of a band... called ourselves the OOkies for almost 2 weeks, ran a poll to find a new name and on April 17th, we joined myspace.com as a The Slack Republic.

Dec 2005- We had continued to make music and upload it to myspace, all the while auditioning drummers. At the end of november we were asked to open for HR (of Bad Brains) but still don't have a drummer. Chris Henry of the band Republik agrees to sit in with us and we accept the invite to play.

Feb 2006- We drive 6 hours to Crystal Springs Mississippi to record with a childhood friend of Pierre's. We record 9 songs in 3 days. Steven Roberts fills in on the drums.

(Year 1)

April 2006- Less than 2 weeks before our scheduled 6 show, 7 day outing up the east coast Lane Anderson is dubbed our new drummer. Our most notable show being The Knitting Factory gig with Stars of Track and Field, Land of Talk and Cloud Cult in New York. One year (to the day) of the anniversary of joining myspace.com

June 2006- We go out on our second tour, a 3 week adventure up the east coast. Sept 2006- Began recording of the the debut release, Mec & Pierre & Mike & Lane

Nov 2006- Interview Published in the November/December issue of Toronto based Liberator Magazine.

It has come to my attention that rumor mill has been working overtime. I've been hearing all type of rumors about our upcoming shows. Every place from New York to Cananda, and every band from The Carps to J*davey to Noisettes!!!

I'm not going to confirm or deny anything. I'm writing just to make it clear that any show we are scheduled to play will be listed on this page, so if you don't see it, that because it's not happening.
Fair?

rock!

And while I'm at it, let me clear up a couple other rumors.
• Mike is not gay, sorry.
• Mec and Pierre were not married.
• Lane is not Pierre's little brother.
• Mec did indeed chop off her locks.

The end.

Which is why The Slack Republic is still going steady. Yes, Mec is in New York at the moment, and Pierre working on a new project... but don't jump the grand canyon. The slackers are doing what they do best, taking a well needed rest after rocking up and down the east coast this summer.

The band just wrapped recording on their debut release, tentatively titled "Mec & Pierre & Mike & Lane" which drops early next uear. Additionally, jaws will be dropping when a number of remixes from the disc hit the aurwaves. REMIX!.
The fresh sound is sure to challange critics to find a synonym for "kick ass". So stay tuned!

PS- If you're wondering how Round 2 went... no idea. We were too busy melting faces at The Atl Warriors party that night to know.

So it looks like even though one band's fans out numbered our fans 3:1, The Slack Republic could not be denied. We won second place in last night's battle of the bands and will be moving on to round 2 of the Bodog Battle of the Bands, trying to win a $1 Million record contract. Well... at least that 's the word on the street.

In true slack fashion after we rocked the stage at Vinyl Atlanta last night, we goofed off, made nice with our fans and then took off. So like Michael Jackson at the '96 Grammy awards... We were not there to accept our prize.

What does that mean? It means that were 2 rounds away from the finals in LA.
Unfortunately the results are not up on the Bodog site yet, so all we have to go off for now are a few phone calls from ecstatic fans who stayed till the very end and heard our name announced.

So we'd like to give a big thanks to everyone who came out last night because it became painfully obvious... the best performance will not win this battle.

It's popularity contest.

So best thing you guys can do to help us out is to vote for The Slack Republic HERE and to come out to the next battle and hoot and holler. As soon as the date for the next battle goes up we'll have tickets available on our myspace.
So keep your eyes and ears open for The Slack.

XOXO

Pierre and I met April 1st 2005 after 24+ hours of instant messaging. I can't recount the day as accurately as I'd like. Just that I was pretty horse and quite sleep deprived from trip to wmc that year. Although Pierre was not at the conference, he was just as sleep deprived if not more.

We had recorded our first demo (Not Ready) over the interenet the night before which lead to us to agreeing to meet. We sat in my room sippin caribou coffee and tea (respectively) and talked to the early hours. Pierre went home, leaving the hint of something promising behind. My mind still racing by the time he got home, so we talked online some more.

Pierre had sent me a number of tracks the night before. I had some loose vocals I have worked on that day, and decided I'd let him hear them. Shortly after he sent me the track with some effects on it and the second demos was in the bag.

We met on April 1st, completed our second demo early in the morning, April 2nd.
We played with the idea of a band... called ourselves the OOkies for almost a week, ran a poll to find a new name and a week later, on April 17th, we joined myspace as a The Slack Republic.

We spent this April Fool's day in a place we wish we hadn't been, waiting to play a show we should have turned down... so to start a new tradition we will never agree to play April 1st again!

How will we be spending our myspace anniversary? Headlining @ Knitting Factory NY is how.

The show tonight was monkey bananas!!!
I dare anyone who was there to tell me they don't love the nursery!

Thanks to all of the bands-
To Swank Sinatra for filling in and doing a great job, Tendaberry for doing what you do and in such great form, and Engineering for making us dance and just being plain awesome.

Thanks so much to everyone who came out... that's right all 50-something of you sons of bitches. Even the ones who didn't pay. Special thanks to the people who drew all over the walls and fucked up my paint markers 0_o oh... and to Ryan for taking what I know will be awesome photos

No matter how you slice it... I had fucking blast and the fact that Pierre punched a whole in the wall and that Mike threw up and passed out hugging the toilet, proves that they had a blast too. These shits get better everytime! Can't wait till April 21st

Man! Where to start? Ok... Yesterday we returned from a 4 day trip. Our first stop was Jackson Mississippi where the guys caught up with their families and loved ones. In the morning we made our way to Crystal Spings, Mississippi where we spent the following 3 days recording our EP. Tentatively titled "And Before They Could Gather Their Clothes", the EP is recorded. So you can expect to hear more about it and it's availability shortly. A few hours after we got back to atlanta we played a show at The Star Bar which was too fucking awesome! We were super sleep deprived and unapologetic, which might explain why we got into so much trouble thatt night. Can't say I've had more fun on stage though. So what's next? The opening of the Nursery! That's right!!! If you haven't already heard... we're planning a huge ass house party. We're playing, we've got a band from out of town coming to play... we've even got some fans from out of town coming in just to soak it all up. Hope to see you all there. more info as it unfolds. www.myspace.com/thenurseryatlanta
