This coming December 12 th, is a release party for an EP at Oliver's located in the Cask and Flagon in Kenmore Square. It is the last time John Courduvelis will perform under the title of just Common Thrill, in the future it will be JOHNNY C and the Common Thrill
He and drummer Neil Bowman began the band about a decade ago, and in that time there has been both evolution and revolution in style, performance and band members. Common Thrill always took a democratic Jim Morrison and the Doors approach to their band and not many out-of-the-ordinary struggles ensued. However what time has pressed and experience has cut is the brilliance of the independent artist of Johnny C. He has given us such amazing tunes as" "Morphine Drip," "Lullaby" and "Hollywood Nights." and hopefully what we've seen so far is an indication of many more years of heart stirring, ground-breaking music.
He has had has had an amazing musical career. He learned to sing by performing in the Greek Choir and listening to his father who sang opera. He studied classical piano at the age of 6! By 2004, he was a lead singer for a rock group at the "International Freedom Festival" where there were thousands and thousands of people, all captivated by his performance. Many have been moved by him, and stand the dreaming in front of him when he performs. He has spent a considerable amount of time composing, singing lead and playing keys for Common Thrill, this alternative rock group. They have attracted the attention of Radiohead producer Jim Warren who put out their first EP, and Anthony Resta, the engineer who has worked with Elton John and Duran Duran has worked on the EP being released in December. Billboard Magazine tabbed his group the "band to watch" in 2006. The following year, one of Johnny C's songs was placed on the TV show "Road Trip Nation." Another was slated to run on ABC's "Miracle Workers." And his compositions were the inspirations for two music videos and a feature film Alamo Gold (2008) Indeed Indeed Johnny C has taken Common Thrill far, and who knows what the future will bring as they transition to Johnny C and the Common Thrill.
Stay tuned for news of his solo CD, but by all means come and enjoy his performance as the frontman for Common Thrill.
-"This is not Pop, but pure Rock'n Roll!"
- "There is a poetic quality of his lyrics. In "Morphine Drip" a connection between hope and knowledge and the desire to end an inner struggle, this is impressive."
Frank Milautzcki, Germany: Titel Magazine
"… heart cradling, highly original, passionate and intense music. Several parts U2, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, with an unpredictable Roxy Music and Peter Gabriel bent, the focus is always on melody and emotion. "
Joel Simches, Staff Writer: The Noise, Boston
"John Courduvelis has the most amazing voice and songwriting skills! I just LOVE "Lullaby," it hits me straight in the heart."
Tina Arwidson, Music Journalist: Sweden, Zero Magazine
John Cour du Velis. He has one of those rare countertenor voices, and it is shimmeringly honeyed. (Without a doubt the beauty and range of his voice and his striking good looks are why he is likened to a young Jim Morrison, JDM.) In the melancholy tune "Morphine Drip", he softly lures us in with his rich falsetto. The notes cascade in mournful whispering brilliance on the first word "starless" and take us on an intoxicating voyage through the sad tune to a primal, but melodic, scream. It is flawless, executed in long clear agony. This sung scream is a tool he uses as effectively and beautifully as Jimmy Gnecco of "Ours" as we hear in the playfully dark tune.

Stunning Lead VOX in whispers or screams/Slammin Guitars/"Not your Uncle's Alternative Rock
Common Thrill has taken up arms and is clearing a fork in that road with literate lyrics and music that transcend a rebellious message and overly manufactured sounds. Sure Common Thrill fits the genre and does smack of the best: Cold Play, Floyd, Radiohead, U2, Moody Blues or... you tell me. But Common Thrill takes a chance with the diversity and experimentation aspect of Alternative and in so doing; they are riding the crest of Neo Alternative wave. Their sound is not industrial or mechanized. Instead they seem to be going forward by going backward a step and focusing more on the lead singer with traditionally-structured lyric-centered tunes. And they have the talented frontman to do that, John Courduvelis. He has one of those rare countertenor voices, and it is shimmeringly honied. (Without a doubt the beauty and range of his voice and his striking good looks are why he is likened to a young Jim Morrison, JDM.) Courduvelis softly lures us into the melancholy tune Morphine Drip. His rich falsetto notes cascade in mournful whispering brilliance on the first word "starless" and take us on an intoxicating voyage through the sad tune to a primal, but melodic, scream. It is flawless, executed in long clear agony. This sung scream is a tool he uses as effectively and beautifully as Jimmy Gnecco of "Ours" as we hear in the playfully dark tune, Pieces, one of my favorite. Common Thrill's CD further showcases their diversity with the downright electric Whiskey Glow, a sort a Delta Funk-based tune, that would make Muddy himself tap his feet and grin. The beat got into me when I heard it on the CD and live? It got into everyone. Common Thrill is headed for greatness.

Vocalist John Courduvelis is the illegitimate bastard lovechild of Jim Morrison and Jeff Buckley. There are moments of this disc that recall the textural brilliance of 10cc, circa 1976. Very few bands can be rootsy (Whiskey Glow) and atmospheric (Morphine Drip) in the way that this band is. While their influences may be easy to spot by the more cynical, Common Thrill doesnt sound like anyone, or perhaps they sound like a lot of different things, but filtered very well. The Noise, May 2005
"One of Boston's Best Rock bands,Common Thrill, is heart cradling, highly original, passionate and intense music. Several parts U2, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, with an unpredictable Roxy Music and Peter Gabriel bent, the focus is always on melody and emotion. Known for their equally intense and unpredictable live shows, Common Thrill has become a beloved staple and a breath of fresh air in Bostons rock scene. Yoursound
Formed in 2002 Thrill always incorporate wide musical influences, such as Coldplay, Radiohead, Interpol, and the Cars. John shares vocal harmonies with guitarist Brian Fernald. Fleshed out by Fernald and Rich DeCaprios brilliantly expressive guitar, keyboard and sampling work, and Mark Kelleys pulsing, melodic bass, Johns Greek-American folk roots peek through the psychedelic arrangements. The band has become a staple at the local Boston clubs such as T.T. the Bears, The Middle East Café, and the Lizard Lounge. While building a solid fan base, they have opened for such national acts as CycleFly, PeeShy and 8 _ Souvenirs. The CD is currently available through CDBaby.com. The single Morphine Drip has received airplay on the legendary Boston radio station WFNX, being featured on their Boston Product Spotlight segments. Whiskey Glow reached Number 5 on GarageBand.coms top rock tracks charts. Common Thrill is touring extensively to support the CD.
With one foot in the bayou and the other in the eighth dimension, Bostonian five-piece Common Thrill combine dirty classic rock riffage with Radiohead-style space-rock. Moody thoughts and sinister sentiment interweave with lush melodies and uplifting choruses. Overplay.com
Common Thrill is a five-piece Boston pop/rock band that slyly twists the conventional boundaries of modern rock. Their latest CD, Common Thrill, was produced by Radiohead producer Jim Warren (The Bends, I Might Be Wrong: Live Recordings).

This debut CD by Common Thrill was produced by Radiohead's producer and longtime live sound engineer, Jim Warren ("The Bends", "I Might Be Wrong") in March 2004.
This is rock music of such passion, beauty and intensity, you may just start believing in the art form again. Likened to Radiohead, Interpol, Snow Patrol, Pink Floyd, Jeff Buckley and Coldplay, Common Thrill is stopping fans and critics in their tracks with their hypnotic, soothing, and sometimes pleasantly troubling musical vision. What does it sound like? Slamming rhythm sections, richly layered and soaring guitars, heart-breakingly haunting poetic vocals, and often experimental textures that always have melody and hooks at the forefront. The lyrics cover such topics as the love and loss in life, regrets, and rewards and the pain and passion we all endure. You've heard these superlatives before, but it is suggested that you listen to this music closely, and you will hear it's power, emotion and majesty.

Damn! This is good.. a strange delight -a Future Collector's Item
My favorite track on this is definitely "Morphine Drip"... it's got a watery, otherworldy vibe and is one of the most intense songs I've ever heard, and the backstory on that song is tragic and spooky.
Since buying the disc I've found out quite a bit about this band. Anyone who knows anything about the band surely has heard/read the rumor or backstory to the recording session; that the CD was made during the week that the father of one of the band members died and the aunt of another band member was dying, and that at the end of a long day, just before leaving, all band members exhausted from a long day of recording, a scrap version of "Morphine Drip" was recorded going into midnight with candles in the studio; and that one of the band members then went home only to find a message on his voicemail that his father had just passed away at midnight while they had been recording that song; and that the band had wanted to retake the song until they heard that this happened, that the guy had died while they were recording that song...and they just left it as is, scrap take... warts and all. Whether fact or myth, the incredible mood captured in that song sure sounds genuine, like it reaches deep into darkness and deep into light; sounds very incredibly real. I have to say when the chorus kicks in to "Morphine Drip" it's positvely gut wrenching, it brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it.
