Been a while since we posted anything in our blog here... long overdue. We never really wrote about my moving to the West Coast, hardly a word about the farewell (for now) show, and barely updated outside of show announcements since the disastrous event known as Frog Fest. That was something special.
Well the short version is that I, Weszt, namesake and writer for the band, am now living in Corvallis, Oregon. Didn't expect that to happen, but it was necessary. Is the band done? Hard to say? The music? Definitely not! I've been hiding out for months now, thinking mostly, trying to figure out what my next steps are. One initial step was obvious: practice like I never have before.
You see somewhere along the way I really stopped practicing and I think it showed. Now the band practiced all the time, but was hardly progressing and that compounded with the fact I'd stopped journaling and songwriting pretty much indicated there was something wrong somewhere. Truth be told I needed a break in a big way. Things had gotten into such deep sunken routines that I wasn't having very much fun and wasn't feeling as if I could experiment much. I was losing control of my art and my band and was lying to myself about a lot of it.
Then out of the blue I got a job offer that would take me about as far away as I've ever been: Oregon. Should be here for a year or so and then, if things go according to plan, I should be moving on to San Francisco. Or maybe not. Who knows.
But now that I've had some time to do the complete opposite of what I'd been doing, I'm genuinely excited about music again. I'm practicing better and more diligently than I have in many years and I'm getting so much better. I've gotten good enough in fact that I feel I'd been doing a tremendous disservice to all our plans by playing so crappily for so long. You deserved better and I should feel at least a little ashamed. The songs deserved more, at the very least. Can't change my mistakes, but I can avoid repeating them.
So now I'm working towards writing and recording. Not 100% clear on all the details, but I'm going to start demoing in the new year and hopefully will begin dipping my foot back into the waters of stage performing. Not much in this part of the state, so I may end up swallowing some pride and hitting an open mic night. Hate those damn things, but while I'm hiding in the foothills of Oregon reinventing myself, its better than nothing.
I do have a few things going on music business-wise, but I'm keeping them to myself for now as I'm not sure where they're going to go. I'm considering an agent, at least to push all the recorded material to TV and film. Always felt that songs like Pretty Vampires would be great in a movie, but I am obviously biased.
Enough for now and Happy Holidays!

I think we've finally dried out, having gotten drenched off and on all day at Frog Fest 2008. Bummer that Gustav had to have his say on what was overall a very nice day, but that's the breaks living in Florida during Hurricane season. Fortunately there were a few hundred hard core music fans braving the weather and 10+ bands determined to play come hell or high water. Weszt obviously was among them, though we had to arrive separately due to day job schedules and such. At least this way some of the guys go to go home earlier than those of us who stayed to the nearly wee hours taking care of business.
There were a lot of great performances but I've got to tell you, performing wasn't necessarily easy. By the time we took the stage, the stage itself was slippery with rain and the sweat of a day full of bands. The rain had stopped by this point (roughly 10:15 PM) and the humidity skyrocketed. That pretty much assured us we'd be pouring out sweat and we weren't disappointed: it was hotter than hell but a great opportunity to rock. We slipped around quite a bit – feet, hands, and all – and nearly lost our drummer when the kick started sliding off the riser. Our exhausted sound guy didn't notice (and neither did we) until three songs in that he'd not hooked up the microphone to my amplifier and that forced a pause in the set. My guitar kept retuning itself (it didn't like the humidity at all), too.
These details however were just window dressing for what was a hell of a lot of fun. Despite the conditions and having to cut two songs out of our set, we had a great time and were in talks at the end of the night to play the two day version of the festival next year. Can't wait!

I just learned about a few people who'd come out to what was supposed to be Weszt's last solo/acoustic show at Underground Bluz show to find I (lead singer, namesake) wasn't there. I'm truly sorry about that. I'd come down with an extremely sore throat the day of and just didn't have it in me to do a three set night.
However I've recovered and am looking forward to playing The Haven this weekend and Underground Bluz next Tuesday - Tuesday is again a solo show and three set night and I WILL NOT CANCEL!

Despite my intention to write something every week, if not every day, on our blogs, I've been lax. Well, I suppose that's not true – I've been busy as hell – but I've been busy at other things. Among them is a new site design that I've all but abandoned at this point. No need to worry, the concepts behind the design are great, but the overall architecture was completely dependent on new photos that we've not had taken, yet. I'm not sure what will become of this design if anything, but since we've got our own in-house designer, we're not yet at any real financial loss. Websites definitely cost money.
However while a new site design was hanging in limbo, the band was busy moving to a new rehearsal space and working on new material, most specifically a new/old tune called Die In You. I wrote the song in 1993 or so and have played it here and there little over the years. The guys in the band actually got their first taste of it a few years ago, but we never really committed to it, not until now that Michael Rizzo is in the band. The short version is that Rizzo heard the song at one of my solo shows and suggested that be the next one we add. I'm couldn't be more happy about how the song is turning out.
There is a strong possibility that we'll be debuting Die In You this weekend at The Haven. I'm reluctant to say for sure as we've still got a few rehearsals between now and then, but I know for certain we'll be playing it soon and I can't wait.
I consider this song in particular to be a bit of a flagship for things to come. Die In You has got an epic quality that's not overdone, which I believe is indicative of all our best tunes. This one is also to a waltz beat, believe it or not, something really rare in rock. I love the words to this song, too, and the recently added bridge and outro.
Can't wait to play this song and to get on to the other tunes we've got slated to follow it up!

Recently the band began adding a new song to our setlist called Die In You. Unlike the other songs in our set, this one is a 3/4 time, which is the time typically used for a waltz, something you don't hear very often in rock. So far this looks to be one of the most interesting songs in our set and I'm optimistic that this one might become a show closer once it's ready (we've been ending our shows with the same song or songs for a while now and it's time for a change).
Die In You is a darker, richer tune than some of our more recent additions and I believe this is a direction I'll be sticking too as a songwriter for a while going forward. There's something very epic about this one and those songs that are a bit epic tend to be my favorites. I'm not sure when this one will debut, probably not this weekend, but possibly at our next gig at The Haven.
From here we hope to add all kinds of material, some of which you might have heard already at my solo shows (where nearly all new material gets tried out)... Die In You is definitely one of them!

Last weekend the band played hard – on stage and off. We took on The Haven on Friday night and gave one of our best performances ever and introducing a slightly modified set list. Saturday we played a two set night in Ocala which turned into a bit of a party, with the entire band shirtless and shots being knocked back left and right. Personally the latter part of the night is a blur, though fortunately nobody did anything stupid, except maybe mumble a bit as we winded down. We take on this week with a little bit of a recovery (one of us is getting over food poisoning) and with interest in new material. We hope to get in tonight to go over which songs we’d like to add and which ones would benefit our set list(s) most therefore defining a priority list. I suppose our mood will have a lot to do with the choice as well. We’ve got a three set night coming up this weekend… can’t wait to see everybody again!

Florida Today (FLAToday.com) has just posted an amazing review of Weszt on their website. The band sends their thanks to Florida Today for the review and for posting one of the most memorable quotes regarding the band and their music yet: "...the acoustic ballad 'Crawl to the Outside' pushes comparisons out of a 10-story building. Lyrically penetrating and musically stirring, Westz is unique." - BY JEFF NALL (FLORIDA TODAY) Read the full article at http://www.flatoday.com/...

New press and reviews! PerformerMag http://www.performermag.com/sep.livereviews.0706.php "... The band's onstage demeanor is carefree — whether it's playing fast and loose or changing the arrangement of a song as they go along, it's all part of seeing Weszt live. One gets the impression that it's never the same show twice, and that alone is worth the price of admission every time..." Fort Myers Beach Bulletin http://www.beach-bulletin.com/news/articles.asp?articleID=3164 "...Hailing from O-Town (Orlando), the four rocker boys of Weszt (pronounced "West") really got it goin' on. With a cool edge of alternative rock mixed with a bit of heavier stuff, they offer the perfect combination for any crowd..."

Last night was expected to be a long night, but not quite this long. We were scheduled to play with two other bands, but one of the members of one of these bands got arrested in another city and because both bands were touring together, they were unable to make the show. We found this out about two and a half hours away. We told them we'd play the whole night. This club was pretty damn nice and worth the drive. We had a few friends/fans show up, but I think we made quite a few more, including a member of the band Cinder whom we'd heard of prior. We also met a really cool DJ named "The Rock Bitch" who was anything but a bitch and also being really interested in our band and our song "Can't Erase You". There was a bachelorette party that came up on stage to take photos with me; we'd talked a bit beforehand about the band, why we don't do covers, and getting married. Let's hope it doesn't rain during their ceremony on Saturday! Fort Myers was the city and for those that don't already know, the band lives in and around Orlando – nearly four hours away – so needless to say, we didn't get home until around 6 AM. Ben's day was to start at 7 AM. He seemed to manage what must have been a pretty uncomfortable sleep in the back cab of the truck (our van is in the shop… again) but I'm not confident that it helped. Bobby crashed at my place for a bit and I was up around 8:30 when my dog let me know as usual that it was time to start my workday. Things seem to be moving in a pretty positive direction with the band. We are going through a few changes, but that's often beneficial, and this evolutionary step looks to be pretty damn interesting. We seem to be picking up a little steam, though, which is exciting and we look to have a great year. Among our few disappointments so far in 2007, having trouble scheduling time to get everybody up to speed on new songs is near the top. But that'll change and probably soon.
