HER NOVELS FEATURE STRONG, INDEPENDENT YOUNG WOMEN WHO FIND THEMSELVES IN THE MIDST OF A PROBLEM THAT THEY MUST SOLVE WITH THEIR OWN COURAGE AND INTELLIGENCE. THE HEROINES COME ACROSS AS REAL PEOPLE WHO MAKE SENSIBLE DECISIONS, WHICH MAKES IT EASIER FOR READERS, WHO SOMETIMES THINK " "THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ME, OR TO MY TO DAUGHTER," TO RELATE TO THE SITUATIONS. CLARK'S BOOKS ARE WRITTEN FOR ADULTS, YET BECAUSE SHE CHOOSES NOT TO INCLUDE EXPLICIT SEX OR VIOLENCE IN HER STORIES, THEY HAVE BECOME POPULAR WITH CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS TWELVE.

SHE HAS WON THE HORATIO ALGER AWARD (1997) AND THE PASSIONISTS' ETHICS IN LITERATURE AWARD (2002), AS WELL AS THE ALBERT EINSTEIN COLLEGE OF MEDICINE OF YESHIVA UNIVERSITY SPIRIT OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARD (1994) AND THE NATIONAL ARTS CLUB'S GOLD MEDAL IN EDUCATION (1994). CLARK HAS SERVED AS THE CHAIRMAN OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIME CONGRESS IN 1988 AND WAS THE 1987 PRESIDENT OF THE MYSTERY WRITERS OF AMERICA. FOR MANY YEARS SHE ALSO SERVED ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE MYSTERY WRITERS OF AMERICA.

SIMON AND SCHUSTER, WHICH HAVE PUBLISHED ALL OF CLARK'S NOVELS AND IN THE LATE 1990S SIGNED HER TO A $64-MILLION, FOUR BOOK CONTRACT, HAVE FUNDED THE MARY HIGGINS CLARK AWARD, GIVEN BY THE MYSTERY WRITERS OF AMERICA TO AUTHORS OF SUSPENSE FICTION FOR EACH OF THE TEN YEARS BETWEEN 2001 AND 2011. THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT AN AWARD WOULD BE GIVEN IN HER HONOR WAS MADE AT THE 55TH ANNUAL EDGAR ALLAN POE AWARDS, WHERE CLARK WAS INDUCTED AS A GRAND MASTER.

IN THE HIGHEST HONOR THAT CAN BE OFFERED TO A LAYPERSON BY THE POPE, CLARK HAS BEEN MADE A DAME OF THE ORDER OF ST. GREGORY THE GREAT, AND HAS ALSO BEEN HONORED AS A DAME OF MALTA AND A DAME OF THE HOLY SEPULCHER OF JERUSALEM. THE FRANCISCAN FRIARS HAVE GIVEN HER A GRAYMOOR AWARD (1999) AND SHE HAS BEEN AWARDED A CHRISTOPHER LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD. CLARK ALSO SERVES AS A BOARD MEMBER FOR THE CATHOLIC COMMUNAL FUND AND AS A MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS AT HACKENSACK HOSPITAL.

MANY OF HER BOOKS HAVE BEEN ADAPTED AS FILMS FOR MOVIES AND TELEVISION

"It is exactly midnight, which means Mother's Day has just begun.  I stayed overnight with my mother in the apartment on Sutton Place where I grew up.  She is down the hall in her room, and together we are keeping the same vigil.  The same vigil we've kept every year since my brother, Charles MacKenzie Jr., "Mack" walked out of the apartment he shared with two other Columbia University seniors ten years ago.  He has never been seen since then.  But every year at some point on Mother's Day, he calls to assure Mom he is fine. 'Don't worry about me,' he tells her. "One of these days, I'll turn the key in the lock and I'll be home."  Then he hangs up.

Mary Higgins Clark is the most recognizable figure in American Suspense novels.  The undisputed "Queen of Suspense" is back with a new spine tingler, Where Are You Now?  In this one Charles MacKenzie Jr., (Mack), a 21 year old Columbia University student, has walked out his apartment and his friends and family's lives ten years ago without reason or explanation.  Close to graduation, accepted at Duke University Law School, the son of rich and affluent New York socialites, Mack seemed to have it made.  Known for his sense of humour and grace, the carefree Mack has disappeared without a trace.  Only once a year, on Mother's Day, does he make himself known, by calling his mother, assuring her that he is fine, and requesting that she not look for him.  Not even his father's untimely death on 9/11 brings him home out of hiding.  He assures his Mom that someday, he will turn the lock on the door to their home and explain everything.  On this tenth Mother's Day, his sister Carolyn, a 26 year old law school graduate, who has just finished a clerkship for a civil court judge in Manhattan, grabs the phone and informs the voice that she is going to look for him, and that she will find him no matter what it takes.  Carolyn desires closure to issue of what happened to Mack, why he left, and why he refuses to return.  The next morning after her interruption of the call, her uncle, Monsignor Devon MacKenzie, receives a scrawled message left in the college basket, stating, "Uncle Devon, tell Carolyn she must not try to look for me."

This engaging page turner begins and ends with a bang.  Carolyn takes matters into her own hand, despite discouragement from the police and family members.  She learns that there is a suspicion that Mack is somehow involved in at last one abduction, of a Leesey Andrews and perhaps the murders of three other young women in the ten years that he has been missing.  Is Mack innocent or is he a serial killer?  Then Leesey's father receives a call from her on Mother's Day saying she needs some time alone, and she'll call back again…next year on Mother's Day.    This one ends with a bang when Carolyn receives an urgent message, requesting that she meet Mack at a dark and remote location.

This short and compact little book packs a wallop. There are so many twists and turns that at one time or another almost everyone is a suspect.  Mack's involvement is an in and out of guilt experience, right up to the surprising, shattering climax.  Typical of many of Ms. Clark's fine novels, we have a strong heroine who succeeds against all odds.  This is yet another great Mary Higgins Clark novel.  It is a first rate thriller with great characters and a winding twisting plot line that is her trademark.  Witty, engaging and utterly urbane, this Manhattan mystery will have you the edge of seat.  With my highest recommendation, this one is a keeper.

"This book was so much fun to write (I have to admit, the recipe testing was my favorite part!) and I hope it helps you realize that eating better is not about depriving yourself.  You can easily find ways to eat the foods you love (even so-called "bad" ones) by whipping up fun and easy, better-for-you versions right at home."

Lisa Lillien has written a brilliant, new and refreshing book in response to the overwhelming demand that she has received for her recipes.  The book, Hungry Girl: Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World is the latest outgrowth Lisa has achieved from her renowned site, Hungry-Girl.com.  The Hungry Girl phenomena started with Lisa and just one employee back in 2004.  Wisely, deciding that she would come to her customers as opposed to forcing them to find her, Lisa began a newsletter concerning one of her favorite passions/obsessions, eating.  With just herself, and one employee, she began to send out a weekly newsletter to about 200 close friends and contacts.  Like many of us that love to eat, Lisa struggled with the "yo- yo" effect of loosing and gaining weight, fad diets, and frustration.  She made a conscious decision to take control of what she ate, and she wanted to exercise such control that she not have to deprive herself of the food she loved and craved. Her obsession became her inspiration, (Lisa came up with Hungry Girl when she was taking sweets to a laboratory to have them tested to see if in fact they were low fat).  Her alterative was brilliant; why not make and create guilt-free versions of her favorite craves and indulge to her heart's content?  The trick is to use replacement ingredients that are low in calories and fat, but don't sacrifice taste.

Lisa's thoughtful strategies have paid off.  Her daily newsletters/emails are received by almost 500,000 subscribers.  They had identified with the fun presentation and sassy style, far removed from boring, dull diet content normally delivered by nutritionists and doctors.  The guilt-free recipes, food and product reviews, dieting news, shockers, and all things food approach have expanded Hungry Girl's sphere of influence to Yahoo Weight Watchers.Com, Seventeen Magazine, People Style Watch, The New York Daily News, Woman's Day Magazine, Good Housekeeping, and on the TV Show 'Extra.'  In fact, some of her tasty and easy to make recipes were co-developed with Weight Watchers.  The expanded staff of 6 that works at Hungry-Girl now addresses the 500-1000 new subscribers everyday to newsletters, most of the signups coming from referrals and word of mouth.  Called the "Hollywood Diet Guru," Lisa has been asked over and over again for copies of her recipes.  The book was written in direct response to that.

Hungry Girl is a collection of 165 recipes (over half are brand new, never seen before) and survival strategies for anyone who loves rich, decadent food.  From burgers to chocolate cake, breakfast, lunch and dinner, eating out, eating Mexican, eating Chinese and more, this book covers the waterfront.  Unlike other books of this genre, the recipes are simple, short, fun, and easy to make. They are understandable, even by a total novice cook like me.  Lisa tells you up front, what ingredients to get at the store, what to avoid, and the inaccuracy of labels.  Once you have the ingredients, the rest is easy.  Examples of favorites that even I recognized: Eggs Bene-Chick, Breakfast Pizza, Chili Cheese Nachos, Burgers, Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge, Onion Rings, Tuna Melt, Burritos (big ones), and Cookies and Cream Ice Cream.  (Lisa gives them much catchier names, but my point is that they are things I love to eat).  Key to all of her recipes is that the nutritional information is disclosed with each one.  For the recipes alone, the book is one you should buy.

My favorite part of Hungry Girl is the "survival strategies" for eating out at restaurants, when you travel, cocktail parties, dealing with cravings, and even must have snack food for the office.  Where else are you going to get tips for how to "Survive a Trip to Starbucks"?  These are very practical tips that you can use every single day.  Consistent with newsletters, the book has Hungry Girl's famous "Shockers" (things that most of us don't realize and take for granted that really hurt us) and "Chew on This" (insightful facts of guilt-free eating).

Overall, the book is put in a pleasant to look at package, branded just like the Hungry Girl website on the outside, etched in light brown and pink on the inside, making reading a pleasant experience.  Written with the typical Hungry Girl sass and humor, content and style-wise, it is one of the few 'cookbooks' that delivers what it promises: helpful information with humor and insight.  The unstated theme of the book is that by obtaining the knowledge of the things that we eat, and the alternative, healthier choices we can make give us the power of control.  Making smart decisions and planning ahead, even when you go out to eat or are in some other away from your home environment are all a part of this very fine book.  The winning principle of eating the guilt-free versions of the food that you love and that you crave is continued in this book.  Probably the best feature of this book is that you can take what Lisa has taught us, and apply it to your own craves.  With the invaluable tips and tricks contained in the book, I foresee eaters everywhere taking the ingredients and tips and applying them to their favorite foods, creating and modifying their own recipes.  Guilt-free junk food sounds like a winner to me.  I recommend that on the 29th of April, 2008, you make you way to your favorite booksellers and pick this one up. Lisa is on tour, and will be talking and giving demonstrations.  Check out her website at http://www.hungry-girl.com, for more information.  Avoid the crowds, get there early.  Just like they used to say about Elvis;  500,000 screaming fans cannot be wrong.

"I have chosen you to be my Emissary," Mab said to me. "You will repay me a favor owed.  You will find the Baron."

"The hell I will," I said before my brain had time to weigh in on the sentiment.

Mab let out a low, throaty laugh.  "You will, wizard child.  As you wish to survive, you have no choice."…

"No, Mab," I said finally.  "I don't want the job.

She studied my face with calm, heavy eyes. "Liar," she said quietly.  "You want it.  I can see it in you."

Jim Butcher is back with the 10th installment of the popular Dresden Files with his new book, Small Favor.  Back again for more adventures is Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard/private investigator.  Harry's life seems to be going along on a smooth course.  But a promise that he made to Mab, monarch of the Winter Court of the Sidhe, the Queen of Air and Darkness has come back to haunt him.  He owes her three favors and only one has been repaid.  She calls on him to repay the second.  She wants Harry to find another of his adversaries, missing mob boss, Johnnie Marcone, who has been abducted by unknown forces for unknown reasons.  When Harry begins to investigate, he discovers that Marcone may have been taken by The Order of Blackened Denarius, a group of 30 Fallen Angels.  Harry calls in the Wardens and his commander, Anastasia Luccio to arrange a meeting with the Denarians to try to negotiate Marcone's release.  He retains Archive, a neutral party, to act as a mediator.  Archive is the memory of all of humanity's knowledge both mundane and supernatural.  Although Archive is powerful, its power is held in the both of a 12 year old girl.  The negotiations do not go well, as the Denarians only want to abduct the Archive.  They are successful in abducting the 12 year old.  The Denarians want her to accept a special Denarius coin.  This would permit the Fallen to have control over the Archive's knowledge and power.  Now, Harry has two thorny problems on his hands.  Such a move could lead to Armageddon.

Harry is then in a desperate race to save both Marcone and the Archive.  Harry figures the way out is the trade the third Holy Sword of the Knights of the Cross, Fidelacchius and the Denarian coins he has captured for the Archive and Marcone.  2 of the Knights accompany Harry to make the trade.  Another battle ensures. Harry manages to rescue Marcone and the Archive and get everyone else out of danger.  Unfortunately, Harry is left behind in harms way.  Although he is later rescued, the future does not look as smooth and as quiet for Harry.

Whether you are a sci-fi fan or not, this is a captivating book.  Well written and conceived, Butcher drops us in to a world of wizards and fairies and dangerous supernatural types that is interesting and intriguing.  His protagonist with a cross of human and supernatural characteristics gives the reader a new spin on the classic detective story, blending that genre with a new wave vampire slayer.  The writing and style is first rate.  You cannot put this book down.  This one just left me wanting more, and looking forward to book number three in series. This is some of the freshest work Butcher has done to date. This is a riveting, wisecracking, good time that I can hardily recommend.

Bear fans can breathe a little easier today.  After 17 illustrious years, the 3- time MVP of the NFL, Brett Favre has retired.  His team, the Green Bay Packers, unsuccessful in their bid to land free agent Randy Moss and what Favre relates as mental exhaustion seem to be the causes of his retirement.  Favre in a message to ESPN relates that the study, preparations, and expectations of last year's near miss Super Bowl season led to this decision.  He leaves the game the all-time leader in wins, passing yards, touchdowns and consecutive games started by a quarterback.   His last season was one of his best, He led the Packers to the NFC Championship Game after passing for a stunning 4,155 yards, looking very much at times like a younger version of himself. In addition, he threw 28 TDs — including an overtime Hail Mary pass to beat Denver in front of a national audience — and had a 95.7 quarterback rating. He was also voted into the Pro Bowl, but declined to go.

He will be missed.  His riverboat gambler, swashbuckling style and his child-like, youthful enthusiasm for the game made his a breath of fresh air in this current time of corporate polish that the new commissioner expects of his NFL.    Back slapping teammates, drawing pistols, high-fiving refs are gestures that the current administration frowns on, but were 4's trademarks.  "Brett Favre has informed us of his intention to retire from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL," Packers GM Ted Thompson said in a statement released by the team. "He has had one of the greatest careers in the history of the National Football League, and he is able to walk away from the game on his own terms — not many players are able to do that.

"The Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. He has given Packers fans 16 years of wonderful memories, a Super Bowl championship among them, that will live on forever. ... The uniqueness of Brett Favre — his personality, charisma and love of the game — undoubtedly will leave him as one of the enduring figures in NFL history."

And deservingly so. After 257 games, 253 starts, 5,377 completions, 8,758 attempts, 61,655 passing yards, and 442 TDs, Favre has earned his place in NFL history. For the last few years, the question of whether or not Favre was going to retire has been the most debated topic during the off-season. Two years ago he let his decision linger as reports both that he was returning and that he was retiring emerged. In fact, at one point he was supposedly going to announce his retirement at his charity golf tournament. Of course, those reports ultimately proved to be false.

After his final game of the 2006 season, a tearing and emotional Favre appeared on national TV and seemed to be bidding the game adieu. But once again, he had a change of heart and came back for what proved to be one heck of a final hurrah.  This time, Favre appears to have made his final decision. However, like in the past, Favre could wake up any day now and decide to change his mind, although that doesn't seem likely at this point.   He did leave the door open by saying that he can still play…

After 253 straight starts has he really hung them up?  It appears so.  Best wishes, Brett.  You will be missed.

Review: 9/10 rating

There are 2 things that make the Borne Series worth watching.  One is the tremendous, moving, non-stop action and special effects.  The second is Jason Bourne's (Matt Damon) undeniable desire to learn the truth and exact revenge on his adversaries.

It is Bourne's internal struggle, admirably portrayed by Damon that makes these films something other than trite spy movies. In Ultimatum, Damon and Bourne are at their action-paced best.

The movie begins immediately after Bourne apologizes to Neski's daughter. Wounded from the Bourne Supremacy car chase, Jason Bourne is still evading the Moscow police. Cornered by two officers while breaking into a medical clinic to treat his wounds, Bourne overpowers the officers and leaves them alive as he escapes, saying his argument is not with them.

The story continues six weeks later when Bourne goes to Paris to tell Marie's brother Martin of her death. Bourne heads on to London by train and reads an article in The Guardian where journalist Simon Ross describes Jason Bourne as a CIA officer. Bourne arranges to meet Ross in London at Waterloo station. Ross, however, is under surveillance because his use of the word "Blackbriar" in a phone call to his editor was tracked by ECHELON, alerting the CIA. After receiving a phone call from Bourne, Ross drives to Waterloo Station and is followed by the CIA, who believe him to be meeting his source there. At the station, Bourne sees CIA officers following Ross and places a prepaid mobile phone on him; through it, Bourne instructs the frightened journalist on how to dodge the station's surveillance, while knocking out the CIA agents attempting to kidnap Ross. However, CIA official Noah Vosen who heads Operation Blackbriar (a renamed Treadstone proposed by Ward Abbott at the end of The Bourne Identity), orders an assassin named Paz to kill Ross and his source. Vosen's team identifies Bourne on a security camera and recognizes him as the original Treadstone assassin, assuming he must be Ross's source. Bourne advises Ross to remain hidden, but Ross panics and reveals himself, giving Paz a clear killing shot. In the ensuing chaos, Bourne steals Ross's notes from his body; the notes reveal Ross's source as Neal Daniels, the CIA's Madrid station chief.

Deputy Director Pamela Landy is asked to help capture Bourne. With Landy's help, Vosen and his team realize that Daniels is Ross's source. They decide to send a team to Daniels's office in Madrid, but Bourne arrives first, finding only one photograph in the otherwise empty safe. Bourne attacks the CIA team when they enter the office. Just as Bourne finishes mopping up the CIA agents, Nicky Parsons enters the office. Nicky tells him that Daniels fled to Tangier and helps him to escape the CIA reinforcements by telling Vosen that Bourne had already left the office. Bourne calls the police to report the sound of gunfighting; they arrive just as the second CIA team piles out of their vehicles, guns drawn, in front of the office. When Bourne asks Nicky why she is helping him, Nicky only hints vaguely at something before Bourne's amnesia ("It was difficult for me... with you. (long pause) You really don't remember anything?"). While in Tangier, they realize the CIA has sent assassin Desh Bouksani for Daniels. Nicky uses her official clearance access to send Desh a message, telling him to meet her for a new phone. This allows Bourne to follow Desh to his target. When Vosen realizes Nicky's deceit he orders Desh to kill Nicky and Bourne after terminating Daniels. Landy is outraged at Vosen's willingness to indiscriminately kill CIA personnel and quits the operation.

Bourne shortly before confronting Desh in Tangier, Bourne follows Desh and is unable to save Daniels, who dies from Desh's planted bomb. When Desh returns for Nicky, Bourne outruns the Tangier police and fights Desh, eventually strangling him with a towel. Bourne accompanies Nicky to a bus station where she begins her own separate life on the run from the CIA. At the Tangier morgue, Bourne examines Daniels' charred papers and finds the address of the CIA substation in New York City. Bourne takes a flight to New York City, and on arrival deliberately uses a passport that alerts Landy to his presence. Bourne calls Landy while observing her and Vosen from across the street. The ending of The Bourne Supremacy is repeated: Landy tells him his real name is David Webb and that he was born on "4/15/71", a code for the address of the Treadstone facility at 415 East 71st Street. Bourne sends a text message to Landy to arrange a meeting. Vosen and his team intercept the message and follow Landy as she leaves the building. Bourne's meeting is later found to be a diversion, allowing Bourne to enter Vosen's office and steal classified Blackbriar documents.

Vosen realizes the diversion after a phone call from Bourne, who called Vosen to get a recording of Vosen's voice - the key to unlocking the safe. Bourne states he is in Vosen's office, and a desperate Vosen frantically orders CIA officers back to his office to capture Bourne. Bourne escapes and enters into a car chase with CIA officers and Paz; emerging victorious from his vehicular duel with Paz, Bourne chooses not to kill him. Just outside the facility, Bourne meets Landy and gives her the stolen documents from Vosen's office before entering the building. Inside, he meets Dr. Albert Hirsch, who ran Treadstone's psychological conditioning. With his help, Bourne remembers that as Captain David Webb he volunteered for the program. Horrified by the memory of what he did to complete his conditioning and to assume the Jason Bourne identity, he tells Hirsch, "I remember everything. I'm no longer Jason Bourne."

On his way back to the substation, Vosen realizes Landy gave Bourne an address in code when Landy told Bourne of his date of birth. Vosen races to the facility and confronts Landy as she finishes faxing away his documents Bourne stole. Meanwhile, Bourne is cornered on the facility's rooftop by Paz. Paz holds Bourne at gunpoint and demands to know why Bourne spared his life. Bourne asks if Paz knows why he was ordered to kill Bourne. "Look at us. Look at what they make you give," says Bourne, repeating the dying words of the Treadstone assassin called The Professor from The Bourne Identity. Paz lowers his weapon, but Vosen appears and fires on Bourne just as he jumps from the roof into the river below.

Some time later, Nicky sees a news report noting the exposure of Blackbriar, the arrests of Hirsch and Vosen, that CIA Director Ezra Kramer is the subject of a United States Senate hearing regarding his conduct, and that David Webb (Bourne's real name), fell into the East River. The report notes that after a three-day search, Bourne's body is yet to be found: at which Nicky smiles. As Moby's " Extreme Ways" plays, the movie (in an allusion to the opening scene of The Bourne Identity) cuts back to Bourne, floating motionless in the water; after a long moment he starts to move, and swims away into darkness.

Bourne's internal, existential dilemma makes this extraordinary action film both interesting and thoughtful.  As long as Damon continues to play the dangling secret agent, these home DVDs are worth taking home.
