This festival started as an idea I had when I was 18 while on a road trip with a group of friends in Fall of 03’. If it wasn’t for that trip I wouldn’t be writing this and the festival wouldn’t be happening. That experience changed my life for the better.
In this spirit I want to make it possible for you to come to Los Angeles for the festival, in hopes of you having a similar experience to mine. - Sean Carlson, Organizer of the FYF Fest

On July 28, the Governor signed the state budget. It contained an additional $6M cut to state parks, bringing the total General Fund cut for this budget year to $14.2M. It is expected that this will result in the closure of more than 100 state parks.
The first contest we are planning is in conjunction with the California State Parks Foundation and is all about contacting your legislative representatives and the Governor to let them know how much California’s state parksmean to you. We are putting together some amazing prizes for those who draft and submit the best stories of their time spent at any of the 279 state parks across California. The grand prize winner will receive a gift bag consisting of records and CDs by the artists performing at the event, a huge care package including backpacks, watches, magazine subscriptions etc. And four VIP passes for the festival. Runner ups will receive passes to the festival.
This is how you do it:
1) Click this link to get to the take action center on the California State Park Foundation's website: http://ga3.org/campaign/budget072909 <http://ga3.org/campaign/budget072909> 3) Submit the letter 3) Forward the response letter that automatically gets sent to you to FYFCONTEST@GMAIL.COM <mailto:FYFCONTEST@GMAIL.COM> and you are automatically entered in the contest. 4) For an extra special prize customize the letter and talk about the most fun you have ever had at a state park and send it with your entry letter.
The winners will be announced on Friday, Aug. 21st. So submit your memories and tell your Representatives to KEEP OUR STATE PARKS open.
We need to act now as the list of over 100 State slated for closure will be announced after September 1st!

Current mood: mellow
Hay I'm typing about the tour! We left today at 9:25 from Long Beach, got on the 5 North up to Northern California. Now we're in Northern California, and my Oakland situated sister Hanah hooked us up with a place to sleep and some chili. It's really fun. Tomorrow we'll leave at 9:00 for Medford, Oregon, where we'll stay the night at a Travelodge before leaving the morning of the 16th for Portland!!!!!!
The drive up was pretty smooth. We got here at like 3:45. Rebecca and I took one bathroom stop on the way. SO INTENSE. Right now we're all sitting in Berkeley's "Ashby House" with my sister, her fiance, Scott, and their friends. They're playing with Boo and Buddy, two hamsters running around in plastic spheres. Very cute! I didn't know what else to do, so I thought it might be productive in some way to start recounting the days of the tour.
here's the shows:
June 17th: Holocene in Portland, Oregon with Julie Doiron((8:30 PM, $8 Advance, $10 at the door)
June 18th: Chop Suey in Seattle, Washington with The Ghost of Kyle Bradford, Shelby Earl, The Black Suedes(doors at 8:00 PM $7, 21+)
June 20th: The Independent in San Francisco, California with White Rabbits and The Subjects(doors at 8:30 PM, $12 Advance, $14 at the door)

Avi Buffalo at The Echo I only learned Avi Buffalo was on the Robert Francis residency at The Echo earlier in the day and any plans I had were off. This was not to be missed.
I'm beginning to feel a bit pummeled by all the incredible shows I've attended over the last five days and this only added to the list. This was the third time I've seen Avi Buffalo, only my second with his full band.
As his set was scheduled for 9 o'clock, I walked into the nearly empty club beforehand and wasn't completely surprised to see Aaron Embry, since I'd heard they were recording together. Not only happy to congratulate the new father in person, I was doubly pleased to hear he was playing guitar with Avi Buffalo.
There's a gathering buzz around this remarkable band of extraordinary youth and an interesting crowd of music fanatics assembled. This included Rob Danson of Death To Anders, Ashley Jex of Rock Insider, Mary Chartkoff of The Monolators and Ben ('Mouse') of Classical Geek Theatre among others.
Avi Buffalo composes some of the most original, quirky, inventive and intelligent songs I've heard in the entire indie rock movement. Oh, hell, let's just call the songs brilliant! No wonder he's collaborating with Aaron Embry and Amnion. The more I hear what this band wants to say, the more I want to hear it.
It's great to find an 18 year old writing with apparent prescience about life's weightier topics like life and death, and in such a clear headed voice. His writing possesses a certainty I find reassuring. Just listen to the lyrics for "Where's Your Dirty Mind".
Performing as a band of six, their sound overwhelmed me. Much as I enjoyed them before, I wasn't ready for this. Avi Buffalo and Rebecca Coleman handle most of the vocals. He has an appealing high voice and a slightly peculiar delivery as the words just tumble out while he plays some of the most accomplished guitar I've ever heard. She adds strong harmony and vocal support while mastering the keyboard.
Aron Fazio adds amazing bass and bounces around the stage in a fit of joy that's catching. He also adds vocal harmony and when Aaron joined in, the vocals became an overwhelming wall of voices. The extraordinary drumming is by Evan Trine and there was another player in the back on another keyboard, I believe.
Besides "Where's Your Dirty Mind", they played a great song called "What's In It For" and "Sun", I believe. Not only are the lyrics fresh and original, the music sometimes achieves such great beauty, it becomes unbearably moving. And yet it rocks so hard, you just want to dance. Incredible! The whole audience seemed awe-struck.
I stayed to speak to them afterward and was glad to hear Avi's CD is almost done. I am most anxious to have some recorded material. The whole band is refreshingly pretension-free. I would love to have stayed to see Robert Francis for the third time in three weeks, but there's a lot of shows coming up, so I sacrificed.
But I came away from the show feeling I have been lucky to have seen some amazing bands in my life...and this may be one of the most amazing. It will be fun to watch Avi Buffalo progress over the next year.
All this on the eve of the inauguration of President Obama. It's becoming difficult not to be optimistic about the future.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I figured I should write a bit about what we've been up to lately!
THE NEWS
The Record: We're getting very close to being finished! It should take us about a week and a half to two weeks to finish everything up. As you may already know, we're recording in Glassell Park in Los Angeles, California at Hunter's Hollow Recording Studio, which is also the home of Aaron, Nikki, and soon to be Mayla Embry. She's in Nikki's uterus right now, and is expected to make her debut very soon. Aaron is helping us out infinitely in our recording process, and we're very happy with the sound that we've been documenting.
WESLEY CHUNG of BORIS SMILE put together a video with his friend of us in the studio, and it will be uploaded soon for everyone to see. I believe it's 13 minutes long, and i hear it's very informative. Thank you, Wes. You are a true friend, and a great guy. Love you, Wesley. I love you so much.
The Shows: We haven't had very many performances lately since we've been so immersed in the recording, but we have about 6 coming up! GET READY! We're GONNA ROCK YOU! WOOoaoazoajzjzjz
January 12th: Good ol' Dipiazza's in Long Beach with our friends Brown and Blue
January 18th: Alex's Bar in Long Beach
January 25th: Motion LA in Downtown Los Angeles
February 3rd: Millikan High School in Long Beach! Ram Pride! it's a VH1 Save The Music Benefit Concert!
February 7th: FOL CHEN is having their record release at PEHRSPACE in ECHO PARK, and they were kind enough to ask us to play. We're very excited. This band is fucking good. This show will be huge, and we're still very excited. Come.
February 21st: Elaine Layabout is putting on some kind of a show! i called it elaine-a-palooza, but that's not really what it's called. I don't know exactly what it's called. or where it is, but i'll let you know!
And here's the bad news: I have a bit of a fever, and i'm trying to get over it so we can keep recording. hopefully be back on track tomorrow.
be safe, and have a good new years,
Avi
